George Lucas on the Daily Show

Hulu. I actually really liked him in this interview, and John's mention of those juxtaposed factoids made me intrigued with the book. I've got a handful of film history/talk books on my shelf so it should fit in already. I like how he acknowledged that we hated the new movies.

*Jon.

I enjoyed the interview too, although he does write off the opinions of the naysayers, he does make an interesting point about how certain generations are tied to the movies.

Skip to about 14 minutes if you generally don't like the Daily Show (or just want to get to the point).

Fun interview. I've always liked Lucas. I wish he would lose some weight for various reasons but I would like him to look healthier. Generally good dude and screw all the nerds that don't realize Star Wars has always been for kids.

No it hasn't. Unless torture (ANH, ESB), and slaughtering children (ROTS) is construed as material suitable for kids.

Oh, you're right. I forgot they were all rated PG.

Yeah, so was Jaws. PG-13 didn't exist until the early/mid-80's. Also, what Darkjedibob said.

Wookie didn't want to see his people held accountable and expected to be consistent, leave him alone.

I was fascinated with the point contrasting SW with the earlier piece that Jon brought up, and Lucas elaborated on.

You know, every bloody time I see George Lucas, I am always reminded of John Hammond's character from Jurassic. Oblivious, semi-lunatic, too giddy old man.

My comment was more about the implication that torture and child killing was so graphic. I doubt those films would receive a PG-13 rating today. I still don't see why people wouldn't think the original trilogy wasn't geared towards kids and that certainly doesn't exclude other demos.

Out of nowhere, a completely unrelated and irrelevant comment. Congratulations!

Oh, I just don't get too much of a kick out of The Daily Show but I don't see why you would say that is because I don't want "my people" to be held accountable.

"They love Jar Jar Binks"

Seriously? Kids loved them? I was like 11 when I saw the Phantom Menace and I despised Jar Jar Binks.

Nevertheless, you still have to hand it to George to have the imagination to create Star Wars. I don't think there is any other movie out there that has created that much of an impact on our pop culture as Star Wars has.

Interview was meh, I don't like being patronised about being "nostalgic" when I actually have a rational dislike for something. Some of us are quite capable of taking off our rose coloured glasses George.

Anyway...

I was in my 20s when Episode 1 came out. I enjoyed Jar Jar Binks like I enjoyed C3PO & R2D2 in the original trilogy. The prequels weren't as good as the original trilogy but then again, not much is. However, most of you would probably void my opinion because I also thought that "Battlefield Earth" was a hell of a good movie (& book).

No, George Loves Jar Jar. He extends his viewpoint onto others. I doubt he does any opinion polls or the like.

What about Jar Jar do you enjoy, Mentat? The reason I don't like him is that as a comic relief character his humor (mostly through clumsy action) is very forced down upon us to the point that it's not funny. Meanwhile, I like the humor between R2D2 and C3PO in the original trilogy (did not like the C3PO humor in Episode II) more because it's more subtle ("I suggest a new strategy R2. Let the wookie win").

I thought the movie was okay, but that could also be because the rifftrax helped me along.

I still don't get how anakin "built" c3po. I mean wtf? He's the same standard-issue protocol droid that we see all over the place (even in the original trilogy). How could some kid build an exact copy of a manufactured droid, and more importantly, why?
2010-01-08, 5:32 PM #39
Same way I built a P4 out of the schools trash? He could have just scavenged parts.
C3P0 doesn't have the exact mannerisms of his compatriots, so it's possible.
Still a stupid ****ing retcon.
