Leno and NBC to boot Conan...

:carl:

That's about all I can say. Leno just needs to let go. NBC needs to be less like FOX. Conan is good, he hasn't been on for years and years because he's not funny...

they gave leno a show... is it not good enough for him to still have a show on NBC?

They're just moving Conan back a half hour from what I understand. It's stupid.

And even though I'm not a huge Conan fan, it's not his fault that Leno's show has the lowest ratings of any primetime network broadcast. If it were any show other than Leno, it would have been canceled weeks ago.

It seems stupid on NBCs part. Conan literally moved across the continent for this show, and now they want to push him around while he's there? If he bailed they would have a whole hour to fill with no one qualified. Leno can't pull off anything longer than an hour, and Fallon isn't really doing well IMO.

Yeah, I read something about them having to give him a $50m payoff if they drop him.
nope.

Everyone is interpeting this wrong. If anything it's an F*** You to Leno.

NBC took a gambit with leno taking every 10pm timeslot, and it failed big time. They're contractually obligated to keep Leno, but they've decreased his time slot to just half of what it was. Conan keeps his hour long show, it will still be the tonight show, and the later timeslot allows him to do the slightly edgier stuff he did on late night.

It also means we get 5 hours of original content a week on NBC, a possible chance of US top gear getting another shot, and Fallon reduced to the dregs of the network.

Actually, Fishstickz didn't say anything about it being an accident. He just appears to be the only one that understands the facts here (although I haven't heard the move actually confirmed as of yet). Personally, I like Leno although I don't ever make it a point to watch his show. Just sort of happens occasionally. The one exception being when Rush Limbaugh was on. NBC probably took the chance with a cheaper to produce show rather than the string of shows they've bailed on and lost much more money. I know it all boils down to ratings but they have abandoned some promising shows (eg. My Own Worst Enemy, Life) as well as put on some real turkeys (eg. Knight Rider). The real issues for the old school broadcast networks are how people view media today, the extreme amount of content available from other sources such as cable, satellite, and internet, and the diminished intellectual interest (tendency towards stupid reality shows) of the audience.

I'm pissed that they canned "Life"! That show was good. Heroes was good now it just sucks balls (last heard).

Agreed.

My only real experience with any of the US talk show things apart from Letterman is just watching clips on the internet, and Ferguson and Letterman are the only 2 that I've ever found funny. :/
nope.

I predicted this on another forum and didn't remember until someone reminded me. It's happening for slightly different reasons, but it seemed clear that the initial decision was only half baked and poorly predicted. Jay cannot hold ratings, and Conan wasn't going to please the small niche Leno did have. I think this is the better move for everyone. Jay might even be able to salvage something.

I hate it when threads go off on tangents about something but no one actually states WTF HAPPENED.

Im still not 100% sure what happened based on this thread... but did Leno get pushed back to 11:30/10:30 central with only a half-hour show while Conan will now start at Midnight/11 central?

The new speculation is that NBC was planning to utilize a loophole in Leno's contract to make his show a half hour, but Leno's lawyers say that it's not the case. If so, Leno would have a full hour long show from 11-12. If this happens, it's likely Conan could move to ABC or Fox, take the 12-1 timeslot, or quit and take tens of millions of dollars and buy a private island.

I hope he takes the loot. Conan is a genius. He deserves it, though I would miss him... :(

As I understand it some affiliates complained that lower ratings from the 10PM (E/P) slot were leading to lower ratings for their nightly local news. Supposedly the Leno show is actually more profitable for the network than what they had going on before. So they're trying to move Leno to 11:35 PM for a half hour show followed by The Tonight Show with Conan. I really don't see why Conan would complain. I don't see how that would make any tangible difference to the actual shooting schedule of the show and the upside could be that Conan's audience actually increases by being directly after Leno seeing as how the viewership of the Tonight Show has plummeted about 50% since Leno left.

Conan's really not that funny. He used to be, when I was in high school and laughed at poop jokes and masturbating bears. It's just "wacky" and stupid. Leno is OK at times. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch either of them.

I think Conan and Leno are both getting hosed. Neither is as good as Letterman or Ferguson... So I don't really care one way or another, but I do think it's unfair what they're doing to them.

I don't really like Letterman, he seems like he's more of a talker than a joker. If I'm not laughing, I'm not watching. Conan makes me laugh, Conan gets my views. Simple.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing is a publicity stunt to boost conan's ratings. NBC is letting him get away with some really impressive verbal bashes to their company.

I really doubt this is a ratings ploy. Leno is pissed about his show doing poorly, and he wants the 11:35 slot back. NBC is banking on Conan leaving altogether and Leno will get the Tonight Show back.
