Spider Rescuers Ho!
2010-01-12, 8:16 AM #1
I had just finished microwaving my meal and grabbed some butter from the fridge, I discovered a spider sitting in the corner and moving very very slowly. So I lowered a tissue towards it and gently pushed it around till it latched on.
I pulled it out of the fridge and put it on the side of the sink, I deposited a couple of the heated carrot pieces from my meal down near the spider to heat it up. Within a minute it was starting to move around with a lot more ease but was careful to stay near the carrots.

It occurs to me that I rescue spiders a lot (well... mostly it's chasing them out of the shower or bath so they aren't indirectly killed by me)

Anyone else rescue spiders?

I'll rescue them if it's not inconvenient for me, otherwise I just smash 'em. I had a spider above me on the inside of my jeep's hardtop while I was driving on the freeway...I wasn't going to mount a rescue operation, so I just smashed him on the hardtop. He's still there. If I'm sitting at home working or watching TV, though, I'll usually just leave them alone, or toss them outside.

I'm like that, too, Deadman. I spend so much time rescuing all types of little bugs/animals/etc. Worms that wash up on the driveway during heavy rain, spiders, even flying creatures (like skeeter eaters). I do kill mosquitoes when they try to suck my blood. I've also recently taken up trapping mice in our garage -- they basically destroyed a bunch of our stuff and made our garage really nasty with all their crap. After a thorough cleaning I've been getting a couple a month with the traps. I feel bad but they are dangerous, esp. to little kids. I know where they are coming in, up from below the house, but it's behind the furnace and I don't know how to close it up

I smash them and leave the gooey bits plastered to the wall as a warning to other bugs.

My boyfriend will usually put them back outside if they're harmless or kill them if poisonous. I only scream when I see one - it's very, very rare that I even attempt to kill a spider.

i'll try and save spiders whenever I can, I don't really mind them, same goes for ladybirds. General fly's however I go out of my way to kill sometimes, same goes for mosquitoes.

I see saving spiders as a service for the community, the more spiders the less fly's there are around :D

If it's convenient for me, I'll take a spider outside. But only spiders. Anything else meets my flyswatter/shoe.

I don't particularly feel bad about it, most insects have rather short lifespans anyway, and they sure as hell don't seem to be dwindling in numbers due to my insect genocide.

Interesting justification, I've never heard that one. The same could be argued about killing people.

I always rescue spiders, and pretty much any creepy crawly I find. The only thing I will chase and kill is a wasp.

I can't speak for all Australians of course, but going by me and my family's opinion spiders are awesome.
They (mostly) keep right away from you, never mind touch you, never mind hover in your face or crawl along you like a lot of bugs. More importantly, they EAT the actual nasty bugs.
Poisonous spiders, I kill, they are rare here and I know the chance of them biting me is even smaller, but I'd rather the poisonous ones die out and the non-poisonous thrive.

Deadman, it's obvious you don't kill spiders because you couldn't take them on, and I don't blame you -- they have freakin' healthbars!

Well, I was referring to the classic Jin thread from way back.

We have the fudging things around where I live. Annoying because they are fast, make too big of a splatter to smash, and always seem to end up dying and leaving their corpse in the worst places.

They are good at killing wasps though.

Aye I'd much rather have spiders than wasps.
Spiders round here don't get to leave their corpses around very long... they tend to get eaten by other spiders, or occasionally the dogs

Well these things tend to die inside of stuff, or behind books. They like to die in shoes and gloves, they get in any boxes with paper in them and die... very irritating to go through a file and a spider falls out.

I don't kill spiders unless they're poisonous or in the food areas. If they're poisonous, I burn them with my cigar lighter.

Oh, your spiders sound like very curious critters... and probably not too bright either, they're looking in all the wrong places for a decent meal

I have these things instead. Good luck trying to "rescue" them, they bolt faster when approached than black guys on COPS.

Big spiders don't bug me. Tiny ones do that can sneak around do. I've played with a tarantula before. no problem.

And things with more than 8 legs are very creepy. Especially if they have long legs and tentacle things like the thing posted above.

Anyone remember that one thread?
With the guy really loved spiders?

And we have these buggers EVERYWHERE... Bathroom, toilet, just everywhere!

Spiders are much less common, we have the occasional Harvestmen, they're not very scary. But every now and then a really frickin' big spider gets up from the fundation of the house, they're pretty scary.

Many years ago I was IMng with Matthew Pate. I had poured myself a large glass of sangria over ice. As I was nearing the bottom of the glass I noticed a lot of small hairs floating around in the glass (after I had drank who knows how many of them). Come to find out there was a relatively large spider resting unnoticed in the bottom of the glass that I threw a healthy portion of ice on top of and filled to the brim with sangria. I must have been drinking that thing for about half an hour. I dumped the rest out and deposited the spider on the front walkway. It was summer time in California so it was pretty warm out that night. He thawed out and walked away.

I got the distinct impression Matthew didn't like spiders much.

If I'm correct, isn't Australia where you have the large, venomous funnel-web spiders?

I suppose I don't see a lot of spiders in North Florida. They're usually just small black ones, but I'd rather kill one than risk being bitten by a venomous creature. If I see one outside I'll leave it alone.
2010-01-12, 9:03 PM #37
Yes, and I have never seen one in my life, and chances are I'll never see one.
Also you're mention of the funnel webs got me interested in just how deadly they are, I did a quick google, there are a total of 13 recorded deaths from funnel webs in history, and all were before the creation of the antivenmo created in 1980.
HOWEVER, that being said, they still sound pretty damn scary, they're venom has killed people in under 15 minutes, as opposed to the next deadliest spiders lazy 2 hours.

I don't think I've ever purposely killed a spider. I reserve that treatment for mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
2010-01-12, 9:35 PM #39
I probably killed like 25 Black Widows (5 or 6 females) around my house during the summer. My dad couldnt go to work for like a week after getting bitten by one of those, so if I see them im smashing them.

Oh and I kill other spiders too.

generally the only time i'll kill a spider and not save it, is if it lands on me when i'm not expecting it.

like the time i was trying to fall asleep and one kept trying to come down from the ceiling, so i blew on it to make it crawl back up. then i was half asleep a little later, opened my eyes and it was building a web on my blanket 8 inches from my ****ing face.

freaked me the hell out.

also, i wrote a poem about a spider i rescued once. its in the showcase forum somewhere.

http://forums.massassi.net/vb3/showthread.php?t=48613 found it.
