Gun Ownership and Use
2010-01-26, 2:41 PM #1
Due to the discussion in the other thread about carrying weapons, I became curious about the distribution here on Massassi. So, here's a poll, check all that apply! I checked that I keep all my guns loaded (the door to my room in our apartment is keyed just for me), I carry a loaded gun on my person often, and I own one of each type of gun listed.
I wouldn't keep my guns loaded if anyone else had access to my room when I wasn't around. I sometimes keep a loaded gun in my car, but only when I have to because I have to take it off of my belt while carrying. I carry on my person often. I have a semi-automatic .45acp pistol, a 12 gauge pump action shotgun (a very long and fun gun!) and a mini-14 rifle with a 1.75-4x scope on it (also very fun!).

I think my next two gun purchases in the distant future will be a nice accurate .308 bolt action rifle, and then maybe someday a small carry revolver or sub compact auto.

I checked "I do not own a gun," as I do not, personally, but my family has a decent number. One or two are intended for personal safety (at home), the rest are inheritance from my grandfather, who did a good deal of sport shooting in Alpine. My brother owns a shotgun of his own, that we've used once or twice to shoot skeet.
2010-01-26, 2:49 PM #3
Nope, wish I had a rifle though.

Skeet shooting is great, I have a couple boxes of clays that I bought at an auction a while back just sitting in my garage at home and a big old box of shells for just that purpose. I wanted to shoot this winter, but it was too...wintery. My favorite skeet gun is one of my friend's grandpa's. It's a nice, short, light browning over/under 20 gauge, and it is fast and awesome. Mine is a bit heavy and unwieldy for me to be any good with it, but it works.

I don't personally own any guns, but I grew up around them. My dad had quite a few rifles, shotguns, and pistols. I learned proper gun safety at a very young age, as did all my siblings. While I don't have any intention of buying any in the forseeable future, I have no problem with them at all.

No guns here. Come to think of it I can't recall ever seeing a gun that wasn't either deactivated or from WW1/2.
nope.

I own a Kimber 1911. I don't carry it often, although I used to. I want to get a compact because it's just too big.

I own several firearms of various types and calibers. I've showed my wife where they are stored, how to load and unload them, and taken her to the range to fire them. She is very proficient with all my firearms, excepting the large caliber rifles, because they are too physically large for her to hold properly. She's a far better shot with my 9mm and .40SW than I am, though I have her beat on the .45ACP, .327FED and .22LR lines.

No gun.

But curse you, internet and popular culture, for making me wish I had the ability to hurl small pieces of metal very fast at things.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

It is unbelievably fun.

I have actually shot a 1911 once, best time of my life ever.
It was like I came with every shot.
2010-01-26, 3:11 PM #12
That sounds a bit uncomfortable.

I don't own a gun. However, just about everyone else in my family does & there were guns in the house when I grew up. My father actually required that each of his sons learn to shoot his 9mm & his .22. He also stockpiled for Y2K & managed to spread his paranoia to the rest of us.

The day I turned 21, I walked into a gunshop and bought my 1911. It was an old beat up Springfield. I got it for cheap. I took it home, stripped it down to the frame, and took 1000 grit sandpaper to it. I smoothed out the rough parts, and polished the feed ramp until it could reflect lasers. I replaced every spring and pin. I widened and beveled the magazine well.

I installed a titanium firing pin, a huge claw extractor, and an extended beaver-tail safety. I cut down the mag release button so it wouldn't snag, and put on an extended slide release. I installed an ambidextrous thumb safety. I spent hours fitting the slide to the rails. I put in a skeletonized D-ring hammer and Novak Lo-pro Night-sights. I enlarged the cartridge eject port and beveled the bottom lip of the chamber to accommodate hollow points without snags.

I checkered the front strap and added serrations to the front of the slide. I put on a flat mainspring housing with a checker pattern. I installed a two piece guide rod with a flat recoil spring. I reduced the trigger pull to a crisp 3.5lbs. I installed an aluminum long trigger. I re-crowned the barrel and replaced the bushing.

I did this over the course of 3 years. I did all the work my self, including the machining.

When I pick it up, it feels good in my hand. It's like an extension of my arm.

A badass extension.

Nice, Steven, it sounds awesome. I like that...to me, a gun should be like a car in that it is an extremely personal tool. I have not had the money to do much to my guns, although I have gotten a thing or two for my rifle like the scope and some flip-up covers. I think my next most important upgrade will be some tritium sights for the pistol. Expensive, but important.

What kind of .45 is it? A 1911? Glock (bleh), XD or P220, or some other?
2010-01-26, 4:58 PM #24
It's an XD45C 4" with a dark earth frame and a black slide. I carry it with the 10-rd magazines, but I also have two 13-rd magazines with extension sleeves.

That's really impressive. I don't have the skill necessary to do the machine work to any of my guns, but I appreciate anyone who does.

A friend of mine told me a day or two ago about the new 3.8" XDM9. I loved shooting the XDM40, may be one of the first pistols I get.

I did have an experienced machinist watching me (I don't have my own million dollar workshop), and I was allowed to practice on bits of scrap, but I did do it all myself.

You can get a good Trijicon set from Brownells for about $100.

Don't bleh the Glock!

I traded my 1911 for a Ruger LCP. Don't buy an AutoOrdnance 1911.

I own a Smith & Wesson M&P 40, Remington 870 Express Magnum, Ruger 10/22, Marlin XL7 .270, and a DPMS AR-15. Its starting to get too expensive when I go shooting so I can't bring all my guns. :gonk:

On the other hand in the next few months I'm going to buy a Smithh & Wesson .44 magnum revolver!

I've fired various small caliber rifles in the past but not much more. I don't own any but eventually I'd like to. Maybe a few pistols and an assault rifle like the SIG 556, that thing looks pretty cool.

I have a Colt .22 target pistol, a Mossberg 12 guage, a .22 Remington lever action, and an old muzzle loader with a cracked stock.

They're all kept unloaded.

I've always wanted to fire some of the more "exotic" weapons, like H&K, Sig, FN, etc. Some of them I like, some of them I hate, but to be honest those opinions are based mostly on looks and videogames...so they're completely invalid. I'd like to try a few out to compare. :)
