I've found that information about how to survive after some horrible apocalypse is actually pretty interesting and useful in everyday life. After all, a big disaster is just a lot of little personal disasters put together. I want to make my own cheese!

combine the two -- mbcheese

I think that after a disaster mb meat would kind of be like radroach meat in fallout 3. There's a lot of it around, but it's really not good for you.

On the other hand mb might end up being like a mall or a supermarket...as soon as a disaster hits, boom, the survivors take shelter and eat freely.

I have a friend that raises goats & makes & sells goat cheese & milk. We're planning to buy from him when our restaurant opens. My father has a few acres of land that he's not using. I've been trying to talk him in to doing the same. I would also like for him to raise chickens (just enough to sustain our immediate family). There's nothing like the taste of a fresh eggs. We're currently in the planning stage of building a garden shed out of cob as well, which I think will be quite fun. We've even been toying around with the idea of building a solar panel powerful enough to power a single lightbulb in said shed.
? :)

That's pretty cool. My parents own a decent amount of acreage that isn't really good for anything OTHER than goats, and they've been looking into getting a few for that very reason. My sister is a chef and would love to have fresh local goat cheese and milk. Is it a lot of work? They all have full-time jobs already...

My brother is getting me a gun for a graduation present since I gave him my dad's Beretta. Haven't decided what I want yet.

I inherited a bunch of guns and ammo from my dad. I know there is a couple rifles, a shotgun, and some pistols. I'm really bad with what type of guns I own...it's kind of sad since I know I have a nice collection...but all I'm really concerned with is they shoot when I want/need them too. >_>

If you never shoot/clean them, make sure to at least clean/oil them every so often.

pretty much illegal here, unless you own a license. And you need a pretty frickin' good reason to get a license...

I was looking at getting the Kimber 1911. Sweet gun.

dont own any right now, would like to in the future. probably a .22 rifle of some kind, just for fun.

.22's are just a great rifle in general for plinking. Cheap ammo and pretty accurate. I used to spend hours upon hours shooting gophers when I was younger, it really never gets old.
2010-01-28, 11:04 AM #61
That same friend with the over/under shotgun also has an arsenal of .22 rifles and a .22 revolver. That little revolver is actually one of the most fun guns I've shot. When I'm shooting my guns I'm mostly thinking:

*Bang!* -$.50
*Bang!* -$.50

Whereas .22LR is so cheap I don't even have to think about it.

Exactly. .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire is also a very fun, inexpensive round. A little bit more power than the .22LR, and better accuracy over distance. I bought a Savage bolt action in .17HMR for about $150. Bull barrel, accutrigger, scope mounts, walnut stock. Put a cheap BSA scope on it. A load of fun. Cans of Shasta Orange Soda beware!

[Also, at some in the near future, I would like to begin building an FAL or M14. Buy a stripped receiver, build it, literally, piece by piece. Probably an FAL, as M14 parts are unreasonably expensive. I wanted to build an AR15, but CA has stupid "assault gun" laws. I'll run into the same problems with the FAL, but they're easier to address. I already have a Mini14 which is 5.56mm anyway, but doesn't get me hassled at the range like an AR would.]

I would definitely go for the FAL. The FAL or CETME (civillian G3A3) is definitely one of my next firearm purchases; not sure if I want to buy a pistol first though.
2010-01-28, 4:04 PM #64
Ugh, the CETME was one of the worst guns I've ever disassembled. Sure, it's pretty much a couple of push pins, but goddammit is that one hell of a press fit. Took a buddy and me an hour the first time to get it off. Doesn't take anywhere near that long now, but it still sucks.

Ooh, a gun thread!

1x M1 Garand
1x 1941 M91/30 Nagant
1x Misc Flintlock
1x 1917 Lithgow Lee Enfield
2x Norinco SKS
1x HiPoint 9mm Carbine
1x FN Browning Model 1910 .32 Auto
1x Misc .25 auto
1x Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum w/hilariously enormous barrel
1x Ruger 10/22
1x Misc .22 Revolver
1x AR-7 Survival Rifle
1x Misc 4/10 Shotgun
2x Misc semi-auto 12 gauge shotgun

Misc ammunition requiring 3x US 7.62 ammo cans to store. Black powder equipment stored in 1x .50 ammo can. (Hey explosives!)

Note: Misc = Don't actually remember or know the manufacturer.

Note2: List does not include archery equipment, magazines, large knives, bayonets, machetes, hatchets, optics, axes, or pellet guns that may have more muzzle velocity than my .22s.

I think that's everything...

My best friend had never fired a gun before, so the two of us went to a range today and tried out a some pistols. I don't know much about them, so I first picked out a Taurus, and after I discovered it was rubbish I switched to a Glock 19, and tried out his 17. The Glocks were pretty nice, though they were definitely outclassed by a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm I had the good fortune to fire 10 rounds through. It was good fun, though ammo is stupidly expensive even though its only 9mm rounds.

I'm only 20, so I can't own a hand gun, and I'm in college so the benefit of a rifle doesn't justify the cost to me. I'd like to at some point own a rifle and a pistol, just one of each. I might go for some sort of Russian gun, as they're usually pretty sick but more because 7.62x39 ammo is pretty cheap compared to other calibers.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Oh, though I do suppose I own a pistol, as I inherited a .22 revolver. It's really old, so I haven't really thought about cleaning it up and trying it out.
