Forum Cursing Poll
2010-02-19, 12:32 PM #1
Just curious, I noticed we sensor words like the A word, and the B word... which, in a sense, are only curse words depending on the use of them. Even when used in derogatory ways, the words aren't that offensive are they?

I'll admit that the S and F word can be relatively offensive, even if used in a sensible way (which isn't really possible I guess...)

Anyway, how many of you are actually offended by language on an internet forum?

(Oh and I realize that this was originally put in place to protect kids minds on this site, but most of us are grown and in college now lol)

POLL IT!

All cursing should be allowed. We aren't children. Posting porn still banable.

So you can post "****ing" but you can't post ****ing?

I like it how it is. It makes you choose your words more carefully.

Can we say ****? I've never tried before.

Edit: Nope.

The swear sensor doesn't prevent people from swearing, it just adds a lot of asterisks and occasionally makes someone think really hard about the order of operations for swearing like a sailor.

Not going to happen. It's not an option that I can just change or fix. You should have done it when you made the thread >.>

Also, I have no intention of disabling the censor, regardless of the relative age of the members here. Mostly because the censor isn't just there to stop poor young Tibby from crying, but to maintain a certain level of maturity that Massassi's had since its inception. Basically, I feel the lack of swearing/more creative insulting to be a significant part of what makes the forums "Massassi Forums", and not your run of the mill trash forums.

Hey, not fair. My word wasn't ****. It had an umlaut! Umlauts aren't in English, thus it wasn't ****! It was my own special German word.

Anandtech dropped the no cursing rule a while back, and now arguments tend to degenerate rapidly to a bunch of 8th grade mud-slinging. I like it the way it is over here.

I also agree with this... even though most of my posts have at least one **** in them. Also, is ***** censored? If it is, it shouldn't be.

EDIT: Ok, the b-word needs to be undone. That's a great verb to use.

Maybe it's because Anandtech is full of idiots.

Ars Technica has never had swearing rules, and the arguments are often very productive.

Also, the censorship is pretty worthless when you can guess what the word is from the context 90% of the time.

Do we? Or do we just say **** and let it get censored? Is the swearing gone? No, it's right there. It's just disguised.

As much as I'd like the swearing to be lifted for writing stories on the ISB, I agree with CM on the matter.

Agreed on all counts.

I like this place without swearing, just like how I preferred the chat without swearing because it actually gave us a reason to have mods. :P

I think it's laughably immature but it's not like there's anyone around to see us doing it so there's no real reason to change it.
