Why does society view masturbation with such disdain?
2010-02-27, 5:25 PM #1
Seriously, I was wondering a little while ago why western society views a way of completely free and harmless pleasure as a bad thing, or at the very least a thing that should never be mentioned. I can understand not mentioning it during polite conversation (much like other bodily things), but the fact that it's taboo to talk about it at all mystifies me. It's seen as this thing that you should keep secret from everyone and, if asked, lie about it.

I suppose this runs into the issue of our society and sex, at some point the most beautiful thing two people can do together was declared taboo and worse then violence to be shown in the media.

What gives?

Do you have something you want to talk about?

Sex is the most beautiful thing two people can do together? Why? That's kinda a cliché.

But yeah in general your point has merit. If you and your buddies don't (or can't, really) talk about masturbation "at all", that's a bit strange I suppose. I think you'll find that attitudes about that will broaden a bit as you go through your college years... I'd think.

Most people I've come across are neutral on the subject and believe it is that persons own business.

What I have run across however, is girls who act very prissy when mentioning the subject. "Ew thats disgusting" or "No, why would I want to do that?". Its these types of girls who are generally the worst offenders. IMO. Men; we seem to accept it as part of masculinity.

I talk about it pretty freely.

I love telling the story about the time I was jerkin it watching some secret agent pr0n flick on HBO and just as I was about to let it fly one of the chicks (it was a girl-on-girl scene) got hit in the back of the neck with a poison dart and dropped dead right on the other chick. I was in shock. Most disappointing orgasm ever.

Once I entered college, pretty much masturbation was a common topic and common practice. I don't know, high school at least for me still presented the opportunity to be ridiculed for masturbating just because of how religious a lot of people were and how small my class was. Once I got to college though, it was open forum.

Anybody who treats you the wrong way for doing it just hasn't interacted with enough people (or have been told to do so because of their parents/religion/etc). More than almost any other practices, weed, booze, cigs, etc, it seems like EVERYONE masturbates. Bottom line: we know how to take care of our own equipment.

My Uncle developed erectile dysfunction when he was in his twenties and he was also diagnosed as it being psychologically effected because his Mother beat the **** out of him as a child when he was caught several times Masturbating in the Bath. He was a member of the LDS church.

I suppose I worded it in a cliche way, but it was to make a point.

So why on earth would you want to talk to someone about it? Why would you think a stranger or even you friend cares about how/why/when you do it?

That's not it, I compared it to other bodily functions because that's how I see it.
I'm wondering why society makes it out to be some big secret, and you should be ashamed of it.

Compared to all of the defecation conversations going on out there, that is.

The lol itself isn't annoying (to me anyway) it's the fact that he purposely tries to annoy that annoys me.
People like that are.... well rather then get into a whole thing let's just leave it at 'annoying'.

God told a guy to impregnate his dead brother's wife. The guy kept pulling out, because as long as she wasn't pregnant he could keep having sex with her. So God killed him.

Lots of people use that passage to claim masturbation is a sin, but it's really about disobeying God. :eng101:
