Why does society view masturbation with such disdain?
2010-02-27, 9:33 PM #41
Maybe there's an evolutionary origin to the inherent disgust/guilt associated with masturbation. Remember that your body exist soley as a vessel for spreading genes, and humans do that by sexual intercourse which is 'encouraged' by the sensation of pleasure when it is performed. Masturbation fulfils that sensation, but without the intercourse, and so without any chance of reproduction.

A society that masturbated excessively would never reproduce, and so die out - and so any gene (or collection of genes) involved in excessive masturbation would be selected against. The pleasure of sex cannot be selected against as that would limit reproductory success, so some sort of inherent guilt in oneself and/or disgust at others would discourage excessive masturbation (ie, masturbation at the cost of reproduction) without limiting the pleasure of intercourse.

This may possibly be genetic in nature, but also cultural - and even so, the evolution of culture would follow similar patterns as well as excessive masturbation is still prohibitive of the success of the individual and the survival of the society.

Yes but you're assuming people are choosing masturbation over sex.

You could argue that by masturbating you don't want/need to have sex as often. Thus, it may not stop reproduction, but it hinders it, makes us "lazy" to it.

Then of course, another argument could be made that humanity would serve well to a little less reproduction, so...

I would hazard that the majority of wankers are doing it because they can't get sex

I don't understand why everyone is so prude. I was bored on the bus today, so I pulled it to pass the time, but the driver threw me off and told me if he ever saw my face again he'd call the cops.

You guys are right about women being uncomfortable about it, too. The lady next to me started screaming and freaking out. Entirely uncalled for.

Also, this thread needs more anti-masturbation devices.

it shouldn't be anything to be shocked and appalled about, but at the same time, the intimate details of your masturbation are the kind of personal info I really don't want or need to know.

And the reason girls are so squeamish about it (pardon the pun) is that menfolk are largely accepted and forgiven for it. Women aren't quite as much. While I'm not saying society is still misogynistic and all that feminist rot, there are still a few residual sentiments from the "women shouldn't have sex drives at all, let alone without their manly man" era. That's one of them. Men are accepted - hell, even expected - to masturbate. Women aren't. ie - it's "gross" and "weird" for a woman to do so.

While I don't intend to discredit you as I haven't experienced society from a female perspective, I myself have never heard a guy of any still-relevant generation express any sort of negative personal views on female masturbation (including religious people who seem to be worried about "wasting the seed" rather than the female equivalent). In fact, in my experience it is the opposite in the sense that male masturbation is sometimes labelled as a "loser" activity done by guys who can't get any, despite the fact that everyone does it anyway.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2010-02-28, 1:33 AM #52
Well yeah, guys get excited about it. Actually, I would say it's more looked down upon among other women.

Or maybe everything I just said was total bull and women just don't want men to get all leer-y about it.

Could be a combination. - who knows.

Women do that too, they just hide it through manners and levering social stigma.

I'm okay with people not wanting to talk about masturbation, because honestly I just don't want to hear about other people masturbating. Except for Dash_rendar's story, which was awesome.

Sometime I wonder when my dog is licking himself if he is masturbating, just right there in front of me.

Most animals do not derive pleasure from sex like that, if I remember correctly. Only a few species of animals even have sex at all for pleasure instead of reproduction (dolphins being one that I can think of).

Dolphins, several species of ape like bonobos and (I think) chimpanzees.

Did you know the scientific term for male-male sexual play among primates is "penis fencing?"

I'm positive that me masturbating does not decrease my sex drive at all.

Same thing with women. The girls I know who do things like announcing that they are leaving to go touch themselves in a group of friends, are the same psycho *****es who will have sex in a public bathroom, no questions asked. May have less to do with how much they masturbate and more with, well, them being psycho, but still.

However, I do get the vibe from my female friends that most of them give eachother a real hard time over it. This is with the exception of the "E crew" from my high school. A few girls whose names started with e, who would always tell us about how they sat around masturbating at sleepovers. Dear god, that was way too much for me to handle at that age.

PS Roommate just caught me, bwahahahaha

I don't believe this. It seems like an urban myth to me. I've never actually seen any credible sources to back up this claim.

Christianity has a lot to do with it. But it's pretty much a cultural thing.

I remember talking about it in sex ed... the whole class admitted to doing it ... the subject was never really a problem in high school.

None of my friends have problems talking about it though... and my female friends can talk about it quite openly, it's just that they don't bring it up as quickly or often as guys do.

Heh, one of the latest trends over here is dildo parties. My female colleagues got together for one of those... it's like a tupperware party, where a sales woman holds a presentation and they're talking about all the different types and trying out dildos in the bathroom.

My girlfriend also got invited for one of those at the place where she works.

I can understand not mentioning it during polite conversation (much like other bodily things), but the fact that it's taboo to talk about it at all mystifies me. It's seen as this thing that you should keep secret from everyone and, if asked, lie about it.

I suppose this runs into the issue of our society and sex, at some point the most beautiful thing two people can do together was declared taboo and worse then violence to be shown in the media.

What gives?

Just wait until you get out of high school. Sometimes you'll wish you had an off switch for what people will tell you (including the things that you are claiming are "taboo").

Also, I think a recent poll showed an increase in women who admitted watching porn and masturbating.

Eh, I find it hard to believe that the extremely limited genetic material that's involved in the reproduction process would contain that kind of information. Just about anything that could be claimed to be "genetic" could be proven to show common variables in the environment and social constructs.

Example:
Mother had breast cancer. Therefor, daughter has an increased risk of breast cancer. This has little to do with genetics and more to do with with social constants. A daughter is going to generally have the same habits, similar life-style, and live in a similar environment to her mother. Whatever gave mother breast cancer is more likely to be environmental then genetic and that's why daughter got it too.

Adaptations (micro evolution) are saved in our "blueprint" that we pass along to our off spring. But even this seems to be very 'high-level' and basic. For instance, my immunity to chicken pox isn't passed along to my children.

The HGP has sequenced about 820 mb, the rest being considered outside of the scope of the project. (Note: Sequencing only means we know what order the letters go in. It doesn't mean we understand what it does.)
The estimated total for all DNA (nuclear, ribosomal, mitochondrial) is 3.1 GB.
The actual total useful information is unknown, because many segments overlap, reverse-transcribe or other fun things.

All of this information is involved in the reproduction process.

There is a proven, quantifiable correlation between heredity and the development of cancer (e.g. oncogenes and anti-oncogenes.)
