MotS on Windows 7 64-Bit
2010-03-16, 1:41 AM #1
So, I managed to install Dark Forces 2 using a manual install method, however the same method didn't work for Mysteries of the Sith, and I'm not entirely sure why.

If anyone knows a way to manually install (cause the normal installer will not work with a 64-bit OS - it doesn't matter WHAT compatibility mode you try to run) it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot, guys.

Yea, that really doesn't help dude. I know how to do that manual install of JK, but the same process doesn't work for Mysteries of the Sith.

Copying the files has always worked fine for me.

Don't copy the JK_.CD, that method of skipping the CD check no longer works.

See, I'm getting this error with a black screen behind it when I attempt to launch MotS:

"Error_cannot_load_file: (crapload of chinese letters)"

I'm beginning to think we're just seeing how many operating systems we can force our old ass games to work on for kicks. It's not like many of us actually play these games.

Are you using windowgui? Also yes the manual install works for mots.
I refer you to my signature.
2010-03-16, 2:07 PM #8
Yea, I tried the windowgui thing, still didn't work and gave me that error. I must not be doing the MotS manual install correctly - but I can't see how. As for referring to your signature - I don't see anything :(

He means you should go post your problem there and not here.

I just got Jedi Knight working w/ Windows 7 64 the other day. If I get a second, I'll install Mysteries of the Sith tonight to see if it works for me. I'll post back w/ my results. I've been wanting to play through the single-player again anyways.
? :)

This is why having a sticky does no good at all. If the issue isn't already covered in the thread people just post a new thread regardless of the all encompassing nature of the sticky.

Then someone just needs to make them.
2010-03-16, 3:04 PM #13
Ok - I'm still reading this and all, and the sticky doesn't cover this problem boys. Sorry, I tried all that crap, and none of it works. How about you actually READ my posts, and maybe then you'll realize WHY I made the thread. None of the methods listed have worked.

I think part of the problem is that no one gives a ****, and it's not our job to make your computer work, especially when you're posting in the wrong place. It's not like that other thread is closed to new posts or anything.

Post in the sticky so that we can keep this all together, and then when it gets fixed the next person to have this problem will read the sticky and notice that it's already been handled.

I have a solution that might work. It's a known issue with computers being upgraded to 64-bit operating systems and people frequently forget to include this step in their upgrade. On the back of your power supply there's a little switch. It should read 120 if you forgot this step. Turn off your computer and move the switch over so it says 220 or 240. This should fix the problem. Then just boot up and enjoy.

Maybe more would/could play these games if anyone could consistently get them to work correctly.

Thanks Chewbubba for the productive reply, I do appreciate it - however the install instructions provided there didn't help anything. Here are what my MotS folder (and sub folders) look like in case there is something missing or different that should be done with MotS than DF2, and also the errors I get from the different install attempts.

I don't see a shortcut with windowgui, or the DDraw.dll fix.

Cayden Maverick, to respond in similar vain as other beligerant and unhelpful posts here, I must ask: have you tried contacting the software vendor to see if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available? If not, then you really need to go away as it isn't our job to get your game running.

Seriously, guys, this is supposed to be a site dedicated to all things Jedi Knight and MotS. If you can't or won't help a fellow gamer enjoy a game that this site is supposedly an homage to then don't post anything. And directing him to a JK issues sticky that an alleged thread spammer practically begged to be stickied isn't much help. If his problem can be resolved in this thread then the information can be added to the sticky thread and perhaps it should be renamed to include MotS in the title. God, this isn't like a freeware site where a million people come in and post the same question 2,000 times a day or something.

I'm going to install Mysteries of the Sith right now on the Windows 7 64-bit partition of my Mac to see if I have any problems.

Update: I just installed MotS in Windows 7 64-bit w/o issue using the same method as in the "Install JK" tutorial at JKHUB.

If I had to take a guess as to what's going on I'd have to say that you still have one or more files that are checked as read-only. I got the same errors as you (ERR_CANNOT_LOAD_FILE followed by Asian characters) when I checked both of the .GOO files as read-only. Maybe you're not logged in as the administrator so you can't change the attributes of said files or maybe you failed to uncheck read-only while in the properties for the entire MotS directory. It's important to remember for both JK & MotS that one or more of the files will most likely be checked as read-only by default.
? :)

Wow, wouldn't think you would take offense to a post that basically is telling people to be nicer to a poster asking questions about getting a game running. Maybe you should grow some thicker skin before you come out to play on the big bad world wide web. Besides, I suggested that the solution to his problem be posted in your glorious sticky thread.

Yea, I did both, still have the -windowGUI on my shortcut, but I removed the DDraw.dll after it didn't work to help with trouble shooting. DF2 didn't need it, so I figured MotS might not need it either.

I'm going to check the read-only options, but I'm pretty sure I've got all those unchecked. I checked them all once, then unchecked them all again through clicking the forums and unchecking the box there and applying it to all subfolders too - maybe that could be a problem?

[edit - Everything is unchecked, including the folders. I did notice two zipped files, in the /Resource/Video folder - "Cutscenes.zip" and "Unsupported.zip." Should those be unzipped or left alone? Also, in the properties/advanced button - should any of those be specifically turned on or off?]
2010-03-18, 4:13 PM #33
Try it again with Mentats suggestion, start from scratch.
2010-03-18, 4:38 PM #34
And you have administrator rights on that machine?

PS. My other post wasn't trying to help with JK/MotS, it's the THIEF help thread and it's EXTREMELY well organized - an example I wish our thread could emulate.

Well hopefully with time it will become like that, however JK doesn't seem to have nearly as many issues.

$10 says he didn't do the -windowgui shortcut correctly.

Make sure you put the -windowgui OUTSIDE the quotes in the shortcut target box!

Cutscenes.zip contains all the maps and cogs used for recording the mots cutscenes.
IIRC, unsupported.zip has the bespin level in it.

Next time you post, and bare with me this is going to suck, this is what I want you to do:
Delete MotS
Start over and follow every instruction in the sticky
Now, if it still doesn't work, post screenshots of literally everything, including all the folders and the properties of the shortcut

Hm after observing this thread, against my better judgement, I feel compelled to post:

Wookie06, I did not see you make any threads spelling out exactly how to set up JK to run on a windows 7 computer, nor have I ever, in my observation here and eventual registration, seen you post any helpful information concerning the subject.

You may intensely dislike Tiberium, but the kid is trying to help, and you can jab your finger in his face all you want, but always remember you've got three pointing back at yourself.

Also your post somewhat contradicts itself, you tell the OP to essentially shove off and call Lucas Arts because its not anyone's problem here in the boards, yet in the same post condemn those who create posts that are of no help to the OP.

I am not trying to argue or bicker or cause controversy, your just flat wrong mate. Sorry. No hard feelings.

Did I not say to leave the CD crack out (JK_.CD)? It won't work.

You're missing JKMsndLO.goo from the resources folder though, that is probably it. A few other files missing from the main dir but I doubt they affect MotS.

This is what I get when I remove that file:

When I put it back the error goes away and I get a different error, but I haven't tried to run MotS on MY 64-bit system before and I haven't done any patching yet or whatnot. Anyways copy that file from the CD and it should solve your problem.
