Were LEGOs always so expensive??
2010-03-24, 11:14 AM #1
I'm building a Weighted Companion Cube out of LEGOs. Not a particularly big one, about 37x37x37 (lego units). I still have to do some trimming and restructuring, which should save some money. But it looks to be close to or more than $200!!!

I'm still probably going to do it, because... well, I guess I'm just that nerdy. But damn...

Here's a question though, is Lego ever an unsuitable gift? I ask this because I often have difficulty finding presents for people, and I realised that Lego is always a good gift for me, so maybe it's true for other people?

Well I'm not likely to gift it, I've only given gifts that cost over $100 about three times in my life. Though I'm only 22.

They were always expensive, yes.

Now they are even more expensive.
2010-03-24, 11:26 AM #5
Wait wait wait, you can't do that!
You can't pluralize it as LEGOs!

The plural of Lego is Lego.

Though strictly speaking it's actually Lego Bricks seeing as thats what they're called.
nope.

I wasn't being serious (though LEGOs does look very strange to me)
I was making a reference to an old, old thread we had once with a poll concerning the plural of Lego.
Baconfish summed up the conclusion of the thread nicely ;)

They've always been expensive. I can remember always desiring the badass sets that were upwards of $75-$100 when I was a kid and never getting them.

I used to think Eggo waffles had something to do with Lego's because of their "Leggo my ego" slogan. Of course, I wasn't very fluent in english at the time so I couldn't figure out the Leggo(letgo) bit.

First of all, I disagree. Because even on the LEGO website, you will not find it printed as "Lego" like a name.

I think LEGO Bricks would be the only correct plural.

Wrong.

The plural of LEGO is LEGO.

And yes they have always been very expensive just as they have always been a top quality product.

Good time for me to plug this. It cost me $200 to build with all new LEGO pieces, most of which was spent on hard-to-find gray pieces. So the cost for your cube is right on target.

That's still wrong. LEGO is a company, and since there is not more than one LEGO, there IS NO plural of LEGO.

Here's what I have so far, I eliminated template parts that were around it, and I still have to rebuild some parts to use less small pieces, but it's standing at $310 right now. Without a top.

I'm sure a majority of the price is paying the smuck to pick out the cubes you want.
Or at least I'd hope. Because $310 for that much, WOW.
2010-03-24, 3:39 PM #21
Are you getting your pricing from Bricklink? I'm sure you can hollow it out a little more around the corners, switch to mostly 1x* instead of 2x* for the body, etc. I don't know how much that affects cost, though.

Exactly, same here.

2010-03-24, 4:01 PM #23
How can a cube be too short?
nope.
2010-03-24, 4:03 PM #24
I'm just hitting the cost button on the software, when ordering time comes, I will check around for lowest prices.

It's 37x37x37... so its just your eyes, or the image. :)

When you have half of it build, and it doesn't look like it will be proportional with the other half built :P

37 blocks wide, or 37 of an actual measurement (cm, etc).

Because I'm pretty sure LEGO bricks stack higher than they are wide.

They weren't THAT steep, but some of the older sets, especially the episode 1 sets, have skyrocketed in worth on sites like ebay and the likes.
2010-03-24, 5:36 PM #29
There has to be a better way to build the thing. You may want to consider building one face of it in the "up" direction and then put 6 of them together.

I noticed that, I believe its 3 single stacks high to make one normal square blocks. That's about as close as I can get it. If it's off later, It won't be hard to adjust.

I didn't realize that LEGOs were such a big deal. I only had Lincoln Logs when I was a boy.

Note: Yes, I realize that LEGOs may not be the proper term but I prefer it.
? :)
2010-03-25, 11:57 AM #39
We all prefer LEGOs, no one who isn't a smug turd would say bricks after it each time.

Anyway, Lincoln Logs were fun too, but you couldn't do much with them.

My Lincoln logs always ended up turning unto catapults. The little pieces ended up all over the room, until one would end up in someone's eye, and I would end up in the corner.
