So, just out of curiosity, I want to here about the various phones people have. I got a Motorola Droid and love it. Its awesome, has some great apps. Worth every cent I spent on it. What's your phone people?
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Wanted a droid but settled for an iPhone 3Gs. I do actually really like it.

Palm Pre

Great phone, and with the overclock patch, it's the fastest phone out there. Sadly, with Palm going down the tubes, doesn't look like it'll be around much longer. Just came in too late to really compete, despite being a solid device. Needs more apps though.

In June I'll have:

HTC EVO.

4.3" LCD 800x480, 4G internet with wifi tethering, microSD storage, 1GHZ snapdragon, over 512MB RAM, 8MP camera, 1.3MP forward-facing camera, records 720p, can playback 720p video, has HDMI output, and has HTC Sense UI on Android 2.1. Phone should turn out to be amazing. Only downside is it doesn't have a hardware keyboard. And I do mean the only downside.

I have a Sony Ericsson T280i.

It plays the Katamari theme and that's enough for me.

Sometimes it even has a signal.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I've always had dumb phones, since I've always been slightly behind the cell phone curve, but my dumbphone died and now I'm even worse. I had to activate a phone that was sadly outdated 5 years ago, when it was first passed down to me. I have to say, though, say what you want about old, outdated phones, they're usually more resistant to my clumsy self

Nokia 5140i

I've pretty much hated it since the beginning (still miss my 3310) but I'm too lazy to get a replacement. Blugh

BlackBerry Storm 2. Much happier with this compared to my Samsung Omnia (which I lost, got the Storm as a replacement). Way faster and more responsive, nicer touch screen, better camera, better internet connectivity (although that's partly to do with my upgraded contract as well), ability to use apps...just better, really. I was looking at the Palm Pre when I was deciding what phone to replace the Omnia with but I got hold of a friend's and I just don't like the little keyboards phones like that come with. I find the on-screen keyboard to be much easier, personally.

iPhone 3GS. No question this is the last Apple phone (and probably product in general) that I'll buy. I'm fed up with their draconian policies. My contract's up in July I think. I'm gonna hang around on it until the fall though and see what WinPhone7 does. Then I'll either get some sort of WinPhone7 phone, or get an Android phone (probably the Evo).

Blows my mind that people could actually prefer a keyboard that has absolutely no tactile feedback.

My contract is up so I think I'll be getting the new iPhone for my wife & an iPad (3G) for myself. I no longer have a use for a phone.

I really wish I had a smart phone, but after having the Gzone I don't think I could give up it's durability for such a fragile phone.

I too have a Droid and am completely satisfied. Although, I've got my eye trained on the nexus one.

I've got a Storm as well; I am pleased with it. I can make calls and watch movies and talk on the internet; what more does one need in a phone?

Unless onscreen keyboards suddenly have tactile feedback, I'd say I know what I'm talking about.

Take another look at who you were replying to, and then shrug it off while casually picking up and reassembling those scattered pieces of your mind. ;)

PS. touch screens have featured tactile feedback using vibration for quite a while now.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

It's not as good as feeling actual keys IMO. That's one of the key reasons I got the phone I did. Besides, you can't type on a touchscreen and know you are not making mistakes like you can on a hardware board. At least I can't.

I do agree with all of that. My phone has a pretty usable hardware QWERTY, and if I have to type something longer I never use the touchscreen.

No one can. You can't blind type on a touchscreen, no matter how good you get at it. You can make guesses, but you're going to foul up eventually.

Besides, there's other reasons those keyboards suck as well. Such as the layouts, making some keys annoyingly hard to put in. For instance, the apostrophe key on the iPhone.
2010-04-13, 10:54 AM #28
Touch screen keyboards are often (in my experience) configurable with a number of different layouts so it's pretty easy to find one to suit. The Storm2 also requires a second level of pressure to make the screen 'click' in order to actually input a key, so it's easy to check which keys you're about to press if you find yourself unsure as they become highlighted on the keyboard while your finger/thumb moves over them.

And if we're going to talk about keys being hard to input, I'm afraid phones like the Pre have no leg to stand on. The keys are ridiculously small and there's no chance I will believe anyone who says they've never pressed multiple keys by accident whilst trying to get at one. They're just too small and too close together.

Well I just thought it was funny that you were replying to a post about the blackberry storm with a "no tactile feedback" complaint.

It's like whoever that was who argued against the usefulness of the kindle and it turned out their position was based on "lcd screens are hard on your eyes"

I have never in my life pressed two keys at the same time on my Pre unintentionally. The keys compared to the keys on, say, an iPhone, are actually wider than they are onscreen, although they are somewhat shorter. But that's by far made up by the fact that they're tactile!

Also, click on the Storm2? Does that mean it's resistive? Ew!
2010-04-13, 11:55 AM #31
I have a G1. The physical keyboard is just awesome. The phone is starting to show its age in that it's a lot slower than the phones with newer CPUs.

Oh, and for touchscreen keyboards, Swype is the way to go. I use it as the default keyboard for text messaging, and when I need to put in something irregular like a web address I just pop out the sliding keyboard. It's the best of both worlds - physical when I want to use two hands, and Swype for unbelievably fast input with one hand/touchscreen only.

Oh, and I don't have a data plan for mine. I use a local pay as you go with cheap text messaging. Since I use my phone to make plans and send texts, there's no point in me getting a huge voice plan, and for data I just make do with wifi at school/home/work.
2010-04-13, 12:00 PM #32
Swype doesn't seem that fast really. It's a lot of movement, and doesn't look like it'd work well for two thumbs. Besides, I believe you can drag your finger like that on most onscreen keyboards anyway, for the same effect. I know the Zune's allows it.

I actually kinda like the Zune HD's keyboard, especially in landscape. But the screen's so small :/

Also, I should find a web-based typing test that works on most phones, and have a keyboard typing speed competition. See if there's any results from that :D

That wouldn't work too well seeing as how most keyboards, especially virtual ones, lag pretty bad when using the browser.

Lag should be minimal on a page meant for something like the iPhone. Besides, if there's lag on an onscreen keyboard, I'd say that's just another reason not to use it. :P

I need my phone to take a beating, and as of right now, I really don't need my phone to do anything other than make calls and some texts (mostly because other people prefer them though I see the utility of it at times) and flip close. So the Samsung Convoy (what I have now) is pretty ideal for me.

*cough* ebay *cough*

But if you say something like "wanting a phone to take a beating" getting anything other than the GZone is just foolish, imo!.

My Gzone has fallen out of my pocket onto the pavement (getting out of the car) hundreds of times. It's been underwater for hours, been to the beach without getting sand stuck in buttons, etc. I lurv it!
