I have a droid and it's been good to me.

I actually really like the on-screen keyboard (as long as it's in landscape mode) and, believe it or not, I can type as fast or maybe even slightly faster on it than on the physical keyboard. However, I still use the physical keyboard more often because I can use the extra screen real estate for viewing more of the message I'm replying to, scroll through messages while typing, etc. Granted, the droid's keyboard apparently sucks balls compared to other physical keyboards, so it might not be a normal case (for the typing speed comparison).

Also, wtf is up with the superfluous D-pad? Yeah, it's awesome for playing DK on my SNES emulator, but has basically no use elsewhere. I would have much preferred bigger keys with some spacing in-between them.

I know quite a few people that can type very quickly w/ on-screen keyboards (e.g. iPhone). They may not type quite as quickly as someone who has a hardware keyboard but then again it works well for them & they don't make a living by competing in typing tournaments. This whole concept of having to type at the speed of light for something to be good or useful is stupid.
? :)

I think it's more a concept of the input method not getting in the way of however fast you may type when comfortable. Usability takes a big hit when physical interaction with the device is hampered by the shortcomings of its hardware.

Naturally this will be a subjective issue, I don't have a hard time believing that some people are fully comfortable with touchscreen input while some will never find it as intuitive as an actual keypad or keyboard.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I have some crappy Samsung that I got for free. I don't even charge it.

Oh, and another reason hardware keyboards rock:

Because gaming via onscreen controls is probably the worst way to play any sort of gaming requiring a dpad and buttons.

I do agree with Cool Matty on that. Which now that I think of it, I believe that's a first.

I have a Motorola Droid. It is not perfect, but I do like it a lot. It now serves as my portable music player and GPS in addition to being my phone.

Droid here, love it. Overclocked to 1GHz and running the Droidmod rom with Helix launcher.

It's pretty awesome, it will even play Quake 3 at a decent framerate. :)

mb- The incredible looks interesting, but no hardware keyboard and the 1ghz cpu is clocked at 768mhz. :(
gbk is 50 probably

MB IS FAT

How did you clock it at 1ghz, they only have profiles for that chip up to 800mhz.

Yo, I'm thinking about doing this, but the droid forums are incredibly messy and I've already applied the OTA 2.1 update. Do you have a link to some resources/tutorials you used to get that rom installed, preferably from vanilla 2.1?

I dont mind virtual keyboards to be honest. Also, even with the cpu downclocked its supposed to be blazing fast. Not like i cant OC it later :)

Going to wait for the engadget review before I buy though.

I don't know what counts as a Smartphone but I have an old Sony Ericsson K800i which I guess is a "dumbphone".

It can send/receive calls and texts, what else do I need a phone to do?
nope.

I will join the Motorola Droid crowd and add on that I have rooted the phone and slapped on a different "OS."
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
