I also somewhat agree with your sentiment for entirely different reasons. I hate it when people buy a gun and stick it in a dresser drawer and then assume they're protected from all danger from then on. I heard a guy (I can't remember who right now) say it best: "A gun is not a talisman." It doesn't protect you just by existing near you. It COULD protect you, if you use it correctly, and only in certain RARE circumstances.
So here's where i agree with your sentiment for completely different reasons: If you buy a gun and then assume you're safe, then you're right, it could put you in more danger than if you didn't have one, because you might be more careful or more aware if you DIDN'T have one than you are WITH one making you feel (erroneously) that you are invincible.
But to address your last post: Personally, I have 3 guns. I have a shotgun that I bought a few years ago to go skeet shooting with friends (and for general range-fun). I have a pistol that I bought about 1/3 for personal protection and 2/3 for fun, and I have a rifle that I bought for general fun and for some hunting. I plan on getting another rifle that would be better suited to deer hunting someday, probably once I'm out of school.
I keep all of them loaded at different points in my room. Do I honestly think that I'm going to get into some kind of extended shootout at rifle-distances with mobs of people..or zombies or something? No, of course not. But, I don't have to worry about other people messing with them because they are inaccessible unless I'm right here with them, so I figure I might as well keep 'em loaded. Why not? I keep my guitars out and strung also, even though I'm not planning on playing any concerts...ever.
