Chiggers are like small ticks or something... they're technically a mite. They bite you and it itches for DAYS. They like to bite ankles, and anything in your crotch... :argh:

I once slept in an apparent mosquito nest, and woke up with over 70 bites. So chiggers I can deal with, mosquitos are the bane of humanity. buncha d***s.

I've never been bitten by a chigger. Hell, I don't know if I've ever even seen one. I may have come across one, but certainly not to any interesting ends.

Now mosquitoes, we've got tons of them. They don't bite me, though. My wife gets bit all the time. She could be sitting right next to me for three hours, and get bit 75 times while I get none (or very few, but they don't even itch).

Yeah, some people just don't get bit. I've never been bitten by a mosquito in my life.

I heard that everyone gets bitten by mosquitoes, but it's only certain people that really react to them with the red itchy lumps. Makes sense to me.

Chiggers I've never heard of though, except I'm pretty sure they're a species of giant fly in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series...

Some people suggest that certain food or drink can repel mosquitos. I've heard beer works, but I'm not really a beer fan. As for chiggers, you're unlikely to ever see them, at least when they're biting. I've never seen a big one either though, but then I would imagine they stay under grass here in Texas, if they need humidity, that's where they'd stay.

Something I've never been sure of: Is it true that you don't get Midges down south?
nope.

Okay, so last night, this race of giant ants decided to infest my room, to the extent where sleeping in there seemed like asking to wake up with bites all over. These things are huge for any kind of ant, and I'm pretty sure they are an ant... 3 body segments, head, middle, end. Six leges. Standard ant looking head, but really small chompers (excuse my lack of scientific terms), and moderate sized antenna. I've now found 4, three without wings, one with small black wings... I haven't gotten a picture of one yet, and I'm scouring the internet... not much luck. Here's the best description I can give:

Roughly one centimeter in length. Reddish brown for the majority of its body, very fine fuzz/hair on it. The tip of its abdomen is blackish, with a white (possibly hair/fuzz) ring around it towards the tip. The ant appears to be a single node ant. Which hasn't helped me figure out what it is.

The most peculiar thing about these bugs, is if you harm them, they make a high pitched screaming sound. If you pin them, they make more of a squaking sound. Hard to hear if you're not in a quiet area.

I've lived in this area most of my life, and never have I encountered such a pest. Also, I think it only comes out at night, but I can't really be sure because I'm not home all day.

*goes back to scouring the internet*

Bah, figures on the third day of looking I'd find it. Well, close to it. Some kind of velvet ant, but apparently a hard one to identify specifically.

I don't think these ANTS are actually screaming, I think that's your conscience.
2010-05-18, 10:32 AM #28
No, its a wingless wasp, technically, only the males have wings. Anyway, yeah, apparently velvet ants (ant by name only) make high pitched noises under certain circumstances.

Today, I'll be going to home depot to get the maximum legal amount of pesticide lol (I don't think theres a real limit FYI)

KOP, ask Sugarless about her ant problem. They didn't scream, but I think she did when she found them.

When I saw the thread title I thought you guys were talking about jiggers. Be glad they're just itchy mites!

We get midges down in southerner-land but not the swarms of angry ****ers you get in the uplands in the north (the Scottish midge is a species we thankfully do not get at all). I remember going climbing in the Lakes once and being stuck at the base of a crag in the woods belaying someone. I'd covered the rest of myself up against the midges but my ankles and face were still available. Not being able to stop and wipe them away as my hands were full meant they actually carpeted the skin.
