Best smart phone on Verizon (with some requirements)
2010-05-27, 12:49 PM #1
The company I work for got acquired this week and the new company requires employees to have email-capable smart phones. They pay up to 300 for the phone plus the plan. I need a "smart" phone apparently so I can get emails from an exchange server (and get notifications and whatnot). I'd prefer a fast/snappy interface. Has to be verizon. I'm not sure I want a touch screen. I was looking at blackberrys but the verizon web site doesn't give any indication of which ones are newer phones and whether they have exchange support. Thoughts?

Uh, I think you mean HTC Incredible.

Also, Brian, you want a touchscreen. Stop living in the past. Phones without touchscreens are basically old-ass blackberries and dumbphones, nothing else. Touch is a GOOD thing.

I've never used the Incredible. All I know is that when my staff comes to me get their email setup on their phone, it's easiest on the Droid.

But, as mentioned elsewhere, I'm not really into "smart" phones, so you may be absolutely correct.

They're both Android phones so it should be just as easy to set up on the Incredible. Difference is, the Incredible is a helluva lot of phone.

Touch is great, but touch keyboards suck. I'm sorry but you're NOT going to out type me on your touchboard VS my hardware board.

It's getting to be an aged phone (what, a year old maybe?) but the HTC Touch Pro 2 is a great phone. Hardware keyboard, touch screen, winmo6.1 (or 6.5 if you choose). Does lots if you want it to. Not sure about the exchange server as I don't use it. I think it's in your price range as well. All in all, HTC is the only way to go right now, regardless of the model.

Getting WinMo6 is like shooting yourself in the foot. Don't do it.

Do they have the crappy "standard verizon" thing or are they real android phones I can upgrade and whatnot? I don't want one with GET IT NOW which is a moronic way to, for example, store pictures.
2010-05-27, 1:29 PM #9
I believe Android is mostly untouched on Verizon.
2010-05-27, 1:40 PM #10
Yeah, I don't think verizon did much or anything to verizon. Plus, Happydud just got the incredible so you can bug him about it.

Touch-screen keyboard on iphone is much better then any physical phone keyboard I've ever tried, I can type a lot faster and easier on it then even my mothers tiny laptop.
Not that I'm saying go for the iphone, I think most touch screen keyboards are like that, just saying touch is pretty good (and not just for the keyboard though)

I was excited about the OLED on the Incredible, but they ruined it with that stupid sub-pixel configuration. (It's missing half of it's red and blue sub-pixels)

Is your company using BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server)? If so, then yes, a Blackberry will work with Exchange (you'd have to have the Blackberry added to the BES as a client though). If not, you'd have to buy a third-party ActiveSync client for it, which may or may not work well. They don't natively support it like iPhones, WinMo, and Android phones do.

Brian - I returned my Droid (free 30 day return policy) for an Incredible, and it is by far the best phone I've ever had in my life. I think I mentioned I was kind of on the fence about the Droid - not even close with the HTC Incredible.

It's snappy and responsive, same price as the Droid, has a slimmer profile, and with Swype installed the keyboard is f-ing amazing. And all for the same price as the Droid.

There's a few apps they put on there that you can't uninstall (which is stupid), but the only time you'll ever see them is when you're browsing through your all-apps list, and it's only a few. Verizon has really left Android alone, I think they realized that supporting a very "open" OS is a great counter to the iPhone.

It is, by far, one of the best phones on the market right now. When do you have to decide by?

Droid.

Incredible suffers from poor battery life.

Now before you say this is because the processor is twice as fast, let me explain:

Droid + custom firmware + overclock to 1 ghz (most stable) = better battery life and same snappy performance as the incredible.

A coworker purchased the incredible And we have been running battery life experiments on both phones for the past two weeks. My Droid outperforms on all counts.

In the end its your choice. I'm not a big fan of the sense ui, therefore I prefer the Droid. Just keep in mind a "rooted" Droid is one powerful tool. Just my two cents.

EDIT: also, no matter which phone you get; I highly reccomend dolphin browser HD. Unfortunately the YouTube video download feature has been removed for obvious reasons, but it is built solidly on the default sdk browser and in my opinion strongly rivals safari and opera mobile.

I have a couple of months to decide. Swype always looked cool (they have local job postings here all the time). happydud, when are you moving? I'd like to get my hands on one. The verizon store here is worthless, they just have shells of phones with stickers over the screens.

This is happydud posting from fish's house. I'm too lazy to log in.

Well, I'm currently waiting on a job offer. So pretty much whenever that goes through... I'd love to show off my phone though whenever I get there! :XD:

Get the advanced task manager app. It helps IMMENSELY in preserving battery life.

I got an Incredible when it came out. It is by far the best phone I've ever had.

Actually, I was going to say:

No, the battery is not poor. It's average, they both get about a day.

Not really the same. It's like comparing AMD to Intel.

There are downsides to the Droid, like the shoddy keyboard. And a lot of specs are better, not just the CPU. Also, the Droid has a stupidly weird resolution which pissed off a ton of developers. And there's a lot you can do to the Incredible as well.

physical keyboard? ew

The physical keyboard on the Droid was awesome for Snesroid and other emulators. Beyond that I see little pros for it compared to the Incredible.

It's great if you want to use it for homebrew games and emulators. Otherwise, all commercial games use just the touchscreen.

If you want a series mobile gaming device get a DS. All phones suck for any real gaming.

There's onscreen controls for most of the good emulators as well, although admittedly not as good as a physical keyboard. Problem is, the Droid's keyboard has lots of issues >.>

The battery life is not GREAT, but as long as you don't have fifteen different applications calling home to update their feeds/weather/information every 15 minutes like I did originally, it should get you through an average day.

I am looking into buying an extended (same physical dimensions) battery though.

Hrm, my current phone lasts a week :( I hate new technology.
2010-05-28, 2:41 PM #26
Well you are using it for a lot more. I believe the incredible charges via USB though, so you can just leave it plugged in when you get to work.

It has a proprietary usb charger, so you'll need the cable, but you can charge it anywhere, yeah.

How is a USB charger proprietary?
2010-05-28, 3:32 PM #29
Sometimes only one end of the usb cable is standard -- see: ipod
2010-05-28, 5:04 PM #30
Well that's what I don't get. Did the Incredible come with a data USB cable as well? Cause I assumed that, just like the HTC EVO, that it would have the power USB double as the data USB cable.
2010-05-28, 6:32 PM #31
I just got a not smartphone. With buttons. Touchscreens are ass.

yeah, the Eris is the same way as that. the cable that comes with it looks different than a standard mini-USB, but a standard one works just fine with it.

**** that. I'll just connect to wifi and start up my Incredible's ftp server.

Go away.
2010-05-28, 10:34 PM #39
The power and data cables are the same. One side of the cable is standard usb, the other side is something proprietary, but to any verizon android phone that I've seen. The moto droid, eris, and several other phones all use the same thing

Uh, based on the unboxing videos, looks like a standard USB to MicroUSB cable to me.
