Here's Thor...

Maybe he's testing their stuff for him?
Besides, he's not completely indestructible is he? That'd be boring.

Yea. He pretty much is.

I still think Karl Urban had the look for Thor.
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

Are people really still doing the "I think so and so should have been cast instead" thing? Do you really think Karl Urban wants to be cast as "pissed off guy in armor" for the rest of his career?

Also, they wanted to hire some relative unknowns, so there wouldn't by any preconceptions of characters based on prior roles. Aside from Sir Anthony, anyway.

So is it confirmed that he's actually going to be a literal god in this adaptation? No twisted sci-fi explanation to make it fit in better with the other recent Marvel movies?
Why do the heathens rage behind the firehouse?

Just make him alien, ezpz.

The entire image is photoshoped. Mjolnir will probably look just like it did in Iron Man 2, and it's not going to be glowing blue all the time. Mostly it just looks like a huge stone hammer. I think the glowing effect they've got going on in the concept pictures is kind of ****, and I hope it's more lightning-y and MASCULINE in the movie.

A while ago I remember reading, before anyone was officially cast, that the movie was going to take place entirely in Asgard and be a medieval-fantasy style film. He would be a literal god. I don't know if this concept has changed or if the movie will follow the origin story as it was presented in the comic, which they're going to have to get to anyway to properly set things up for Avengers.

It's either going to be;

A.) The Thor film is set in Asgard and be self contained, possibly having Thor sent to Earth at the end, or
B.) It could be the origin movie and have him sent to Earth at the beginning and play out his super-hero origins as he reclaims Mjolnir.

I also remember reading that The Avengers might be about an alien invasion. Considering aliens were included in the comic origin of Thor if they get that out of the way it could provide a nice precursor to the events which might unfold in Avengers. If they're going this route, I doubt there'll be any effort to add some realism to the idea of a Norse god hanging out on Earth. Although I did also read Jon Favreau saying one idea being considered was about Iron Man, Thor and Cap trying to stop a rogue Hulk. Which I guess would be cool, except for Cap being entirely useless. At least it might get an on-screen appearence of Iron Man's Hulkbuster Armor and a sweet all-out between Hulk and Thor.

So far it seems like the pre-Avengers movies are taking place in a timeline that starts with Captain America (1940's), Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk taking place before or maybe partially during Iron Man 2, then Iron Man 2 leading into Thor. See attached image for awesome.

Thor is the story of him being ousted and finding the hammer on earth. Captain America: The First Avenger takes place entirely in the 40's aside from the very end. The Avengers is how Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and The Black Widow get the Hulk under control with the help of Betty Ross.

This has all been offical information for a while now.

So wait, I'm entirely out of the loop here.
All these movies are connecting in order for there to a gigantic arc? I don't think I've seen that before.
2010-06-05, 1:28 AM #53
Yes, Tibby, there are going to be about 9 movies that connect in one big arc...

First off, I really don't care about casting. I said Urban had the look. That was it. I never said he should be or ought to have shown interest, etc.

As far as actual cast goes: could be interesting. I never would have pegged Hopkins as Odin, but this could be suprising.

Well, yes, how else could they form the Avengers if they were in different universes?

Jin, I always thought there shouldn't be hulk movies and Iron Man 2 should have been about their fight instead.

Okay, maybe that will be the Avengers movie, but come on, isn't that the classic hulk/iron man story? A fight between friends because that's what has to be done. It's also the best way to get everyone else involved because no one has any idea how to stop hulk.

****, does this mean I'm gonna have to sit through another movie full of Liv Tyler's awkward, high-pitched, straining voice saying things like "What are you doing/No/Don't hurt him/etc/etc/****ing etc"?
2010-06-05, 8:28 AM #62
Oh man I never saw the Eric Bana Hulk, but I just found out she was played by Jennifer Connelly in that film. Serious step down to Liv -_-.
2010-06-05, 8:50 AM #63
Yeah, Liv Tyler wasn't good as Betty Ross. I didn't find her particularly annoying, but the role could have been cast a lot better.

I agree with you on that, but I really liked The Incredible Hulk and to me it's Hulk done right. I just wish Ang Lee didn't take a crack at it first. But a Hulk / Iron Man battle wouldn't work in just an Iron Man or Hulk movie. There's just too many characters to have half of them introduced for the sole purpose of filling out the team. They all need their own stories told.

Personally I was hoping they would go the alien invasion route for Avengers but hey whatever man. The everyone-stop-hulk idea is cool, too.
2010-06-05, 9:01 AM #64
Admittedly, I haven't sat through the entire new Hulk movie because I cannot stand Liv, and Norton's performance seems forced and awkward to me, so I've only seen the fight scenes. A major reason why I'd like a Hulk fight instead is an alien invasion seems kind of end-game. They could have more Avenger movies after this one and I'd like them if they kept it to that.

What arc would you suggest for the model of an invasion story?

The entire idea of the ending of The Incredible Hulk is that it takes place after Iron Man 2... When Banner opens his eyes and has that evil smile on his face... that's not him learning to control it... that's him losing it. That's what Tony Stark is referring to when he's talking to General Ross... The fact that the Hulk is going apenuts all over the world and they have no way of stopping him. It's a clean setup for the Avengers, and the setup is only getting stronger.

In the director commentary Louis Leterrier said it was intended to be set up so that it could go either way in a sequel - that he had finally learned how to control it or that he had given in to its rage. Obviously they've gone with the latter but it could have gone the other way.

Maybe something adapted from the Skrull arc from Avengers or the Secret Invasion series. I haven't given a lot of thought for what I'd like to see but I realise how it could be hard to take seriously against the established 'real-world' settings of the other movies.

I know... that's why I made the distinction between the two... They're going with that one for the first Avengers movie... but then there's going to be sequels to the singular movies which all the other characters are involved in as well... To sum it up... Samuel L Jackson has a 9 picture deal with Marvel to appear as Nick Fury in films. 9 ****ing movies.

I'm just saying... there's going to be 9 pictures at least in this group of films... That's a lot of movies. That's potentially an entire day of movies...
