Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

Very promising clip if I must say...

I must profess that, of the list of "name actors", I recognize none of them.

Granted, I liked the first Mortal Kombat movie and knew none of the actors beforehand, but...well, I also didn't know most of the actors in Annihilation.

I saw this at work. I'm actually a bit skeptical of the "gritty reboot" treatment, but we'll see.

Jeri Ryan as Sonya: she can FINISH ME any day of the week... :ninja:

I don't really know any of the other actors either. But who could do Christopher Lambert's portrayal of Raiden justice? No one, I tell ya! Admittedly, I rather liked the first movie (though the second one, eh).

You know, the first Mortal Kombat was a video game movie done right. It suffered a little from the low budget and I wouldn't hold anything against someone who doesn't like it but I always remberred that it avoided some of the stereotypical things martial arts movies of its day were doing. I do have to say, though, that this is one case where I wouldn't criticize a reboot.

Why would they recruit an ex-movie star to be an undercover cop? Doesn't being famous kind of defeat the purpose of going undercover?

Maybe you need to rewatch it. The movie star was killed. The guy they are recruiting is an incarcerated assassin.

Good to see Jeri Ryan in this...

Also, the rest of this looks pretty much kind of awesome. I, for one, cannot wait.

I think he meant in the first place. And there's all sorts of plot-holes with this trailer besides that one: why would Scorpion do as Jax and Sonya asked instead of just bee-lining for Sub-Zero, why do they feel the need to recruit Scorpion at all (presumably they'd follow suit anyway -- do they really feel they need his help at the risks he presents?), why does Shang Tsung hold this tournament if it's not for the fantastical reasons listed in games and how does letting loose a bunch of homicidal maniacs into a city help his tournament/cause, what kind of a "code name" is Baraka in this context... stuff like that.

Oh, was disappointed when I realized this wasn't a 7 minutes porno clip for Mortal Kombat rebirth film.

G, I agree that there was much left to be desired with the clip.

Of all the things to ever get or ever could get a gritty reboot, Mortal Kombat is the single most deserving.

Which isn't to say I hated the first movie, but c'mon, it's freaking Mortal Kombat, it's about as gritty and gruesome as things can be.

Perhaps I should clarify. While Mortal Kombat was definitely about the gore and violence, it's always done it in the past in a camp, over-the-top method, with a fantastical narrative backdrop. Suspension of disbelief was easier. By "gritty" here, I mean more the "realistic" setting that the audience is supposed to take more seriously, and instead, iit just leaves me with less suspense of disbelief. The Marvel movies have done it fairly well, as did the Batman and James Bond movies (at least the first one for the latter), but this clip seems to simply think the same formula can be applied here with no other thought, and I'm not sure that'll be the case. Admittedly, I'm very picky about reboots, remixes, re-imaginings, etc. in general, and if this becomes a feature film, I hope my skepticism is proven wrong.

Sold.

For those that have yet to make MJW their man crush, you must go out and rent his films. You can see his incredible martial arts abilities (and massive pecs) in Blood And Bone, a kind of average direct-to-DVD movie about underground street-fighting.
And you can see the full range of his badassness (and more of his pecs) in Black Dynamite, an action-comedy made in the style of 70's blacksploitation films.

I love MJW. He's awesome.

Because I find the direction they seem to be taking with the story to be a bit off? Reptile isn't a reptile from an inter-dimensional world and neither is Baraka some inter-dimensional species from the looks of this trailer. Even worse, he's some doctor that is into self mutilation. With such out of this world characters I really do think there needs to be an out of this world plot device. Maybe there is but the two characters referenced above seem not to indicate that.

Jerri Ryan said on her twitter that the video is just a pitch (proof of concept) that the director shot for Warner Brothers to give them an idea of how the movie would look and feel. It's not a teaser or a trailer and the movie isn't being made yet. It might not even have a finished script. Anything could change.

Did we watch the same 7-minute video? Because I didn't see anything remotely realisitc going on. It was dark, gritty and brutal but if you think that equates to realism you've got to go outside, man.

He was making a joke. "There was much left to be desired," "They call it a TEASER for a reason."

Tease. To arouse hope, desire, or curiosity without satisfaction. Funny joke, everybody laugh, roll on snare drum.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the "cops n serial killers" direction and think there would be ways to adapt the supernatural feel of the Mortal Kombat mythos. I much prefer Scorpion as a revenant, albeit they 'kinda' hinted that that might still be in.

I did like the overall feel of it though. The fight was awesome and brutal. Baraka needs to be bald though. And while I never was a big fan of Johnny Cage... he's still a key character of the franchise so its bizarre they constantly kill him off in the movies. I guess they have trouble fitting him in.

Of course... this comes from the guy who wrote and drew , as a kid, a comic of Scorpion and Subzero fighting and ending with Subzero dead, head thrust in a toilet seat.... so I'm probably not a reference on Mortal Kombat adaptations :D

I want a Mortal Kombat movie focused on Subzero and Scorpion more than Liu Kang and his ilk.

Michael Jai White has been in some kick ass direct to video movies. He's not only a decent actor, but an incredibly skilled martial artist, and he's really yet to have a theatrical role where he really gets to show off his martial arts abilities.

Michael Jai White would have been a good Blade for that short lived TV series.

Side note, next Mortal Kombat has been announced for next year. It will feature tag team fighting.
