Laid it down and ate asphalt
2010-06-09, 11:13 AM #1
I was riding to work this morning at 0745. I stopped at an intersection where there was a four-way stop. I stopped, waited, then took off -- legally. Some ***hole in a silver Scion Tc runs the stop sign at about 45mph, sideswipes me, causing me to eat it, then takes off.

I laid the bike down on it's right side. I slid for about 5 yards, was able to get clear of the bike, then rolled another 10 yards. This isn't my first rodeo, so knowing how to slide and roll really saved me. I ended up about 30 feet away from my bike.

I'm mostly OK. After I stopped, I took a deep breath, did a limb check, and got up. I sprained my right wrist and scraped the hell out of my right leg. I also got a nice gouge in my right palm, right on top of another scar I have. It's going to look gnarly. Thank God for Joe Rocket jackets, Simpson Helmets, and Carhartt pants. Without them, I would be thrashed.

My biggest concern, though, is that my right side exhaust pipe is all ****ed up, as is my right side engine cover. My brake lever and right side mirror are destroyed. Skin and bones heal, brushed aluminum and chrome don't. The frame is fine, as is the tank and other body parts. I had just taken off, so I wasn't going very fast, probably 20-25mph. I ordered the new parts, so they should be here next week so I can get back on the road.

I didn't get the *******'s license plate number (I was too busy crashing), but he had a big ****ing TRD logo on the back windshield, and I got a good look at his face. He was talking on his phone. If I ever come across that guy, I'm going to **** his **** up.

With a good description like that, the cops will probably find him unless he's from out of town.

Having bushes block sight at an intersection is pretty ****ing retarded. What were the people in charge thinking?

This really sucks but at least you're ok and hopefully with the new parts the bike will follow suit. As for that guy, he deserves a serious trashing. At the very least, it might still be good to report it to the cops with the basic description you gave.

My girlfriend says she's laid her bike down on that same side, and it's not too bad to replace those parts.

Also, olive oil does a lot for road rash.

Hope you heal up soon. And go after that guy with a tire iron! That's on fire!

It wasn't a factor in this case. The guy ran the stop sign.

Ouch, man that sucks...glad you're alright!

Did you report it yet? A Scion with a huge TRD sticker and body damage should be easy to find unless you live in a massive city.
woot!

I'm glad you're okay -- sometimes **** doesn't heal because you're dead. Glad that didn't happen to you.

Please tell me you called the cops and filed an accident report.

I've been trying to teach my daughter to ALWAYS look for incoming traffic at intersections, even if she has a green light because there are dicks like that that run red lights. She doesn't seem to get it, I'm going to show her this thread.

I called the police, but apparently they don't come to accident sites and do reports anymore - I have to go to station and file it myself. I'll probably go file it this afternoon, but I don't need my insurance going through the roof - my deductible is $500, and the parts are only going to be about $250. I'm not sure what I should do.

The guy started to slow down at the stop, so I went, but I guess he performed a "California stop" then kept going. He was distracted by his phone I'm fairly sure.

Cops try to get out of doing accident reports, just tell them to eat **** and that you pay taxes and demand someone to come get a report instead of sleeping on the side of the road shooting radar at other hard working citizens.

Sorry, your rant thread, not mine.

Good that you're not hurt. There are many intersections in my town with bushes that are inconsiderate of low cars. SUVs and Trucks don't have an issue with them, but any sort of compact or low car would have a problem. Still, that's no excuse for him being a doucher and running the stop sign, as well as running from the fact that he hit you. Probably didn't have insurance.

I know, I was just commenting on how the concept itself is retarded, whether or not it was the cause here.

I dont know how it is in the US, but they passed a new law a few years ago out here. If you bad mouth officers, they can slap you with a rather hefty fine. Hell I know a kid who sang the "theme song" of a local rotisserie (has various talks about chickens or Poulets in french which is also slang for cops out here.) near cops and got fines 100 big ones for it. And he's a teenager.

That actually sounds like a pretty bad law.

It is actually, my step mom got T-boned by some kid with no insurance, and they tried to tell us they weren't coming out, dispite the fact the vehicle couldn't move. So we told them exactly that. Then they came out and did their job.

Damn. Glad you're OK, though. I remember a guy posting a body damage bike crash report on a different forum once. Unluckily for him, he had (past tense) a number of piercings in his ears and nose. Helmet didn't help. Sorry for off-topic. :)

Hope the cops find this guy and fine him into oblivion.

Filling an accident that is not your fault, and not making a claim on your insurance shouldn't raise your rates at all.

Here in the US, there have been court cases where people have been arrested for flicking off/cursing at cops and subsequently awarded $30,000 for having their constitutional rights violated.

On the flip side, the police regularly beat innocent people and then deliberately tamper with evidence and launch a bogus "internal investigation" and nothing ever happens, so it's risky business regardless.

Also, HUGE props to Crimson for giving me, free, that Joe Rocket jacket. My arms would probably be pastrami if not for the jacket.

Thanks bro, I owe you a lot.

What size helmet do you wear? When my new one comes in, I'll have a spare Scorpion EXO 400 (medium) that you can have if you need it.

Dude I hope your still OK, it just pisses me off even more about some of these ****ing *******s on the roads these days, I got my V-star in the Garage most of the time cause of my fear of what could happen like what you went through. You did the right thing in the first place, you were properly suited up. Where I live at where the temperatures are warm now in the Summer, most people on their bikes are dressed like they are at the beach, and especially no helmet.

And if I was a bounty hunter I will find this ******* that did this to you, cause Im a bike rider myself.

But it is good that you are all right. However, you didn't get a plate number so the police will be like "needle in haystack, sorry." With a plate number, police could go up to their house, inspect the car and notice damage done to the front driver and arrest him on the spot for felony hit and run. Hopefully someone did catch the plate number.

I got hit on my bicycle on my way into work Thursday. Cops round here still come down and do the whole report/exchange of information thing. My shoulder and abdomen and lowerback are a little outta whack (I kinda spun and slammed back-first onto the hood of her car), but her insurance is likely gonna cover my bills. Doc gave me crap for pain meds though.

Not sure how big a town you live in, but it might be worthwhile finding your local Scion/hot-hatch forum and having a rummage around. They likely won't help if you post up saying a Scion driver hit you, but if you think you did some damage to the car, have a look in the classifieds section for someone after a RHS mirror etc.

Got my wrist and knee X-rayed. Docs say they're great. Some bruising, but I'm lucky they didn't explode. The way they were hurt, most people would have had a few cracks. Fortunately, according to the docs, my bones are very dense (mom made me drink my milk), so they didn't break.
2010-06-11, 12:44 PM #40
You're lucky. I broke the scaphoid in my left wrist. I was riding a bicycle, going perhaps a little too fast for the sidewalk when my wheel hit a deep crack in the pavement at an odd angle. I lost control and was thrown forward. I landed on my wrists, most of my weight went into my left wrist and broke it. It wasn't healing properly and I needed surgery. It sucks because the scaphoid bone is, as I recall, the second slowest healing bone in the body, mostly due to very poor circulation. It took a good six months before the casts were off, then I had a removable splint for three months. About eighteen months after my surgery I had the titanium pin removed. The bone shrinks as it heals, and the pin was left protruding from the bone, which would cause problems down the line. Finally, after almost three years, it's about completely healed. I had to do a fair bit of training to get grip strength and range of motion back. It was a really long and tiresome process. I had to learn how to grip things without my thumb.

And here's something interesting. I had an electromagnetic bone growth stimulator. It was device that strapped over the affected area and pulsed it with EM like 15 times per second (you could hear a relay clicking). I later discovered how it works, at least according to a biology textbook. You know how people with broken legs are supposed to walk on them to make them heal faster? That's because the crystalline structure in the calcium of bone creates an electrical charge when it vibrates (piezoelectric effect), and that charge attracts osteocytes (new bone cells) that grow into solid bone. The bone growth stimulator accomplishes the same thing. It may also help increase circulation, I'm not sure. It's not very well understood exactly how it works, but it does.
