New Old Republic cinematic movie
2010-06-14, 10:59 AM #1
Even for a cinematic movie, this made me wet my pants. THIS is what Star Wars is all about, imo. Hopefully I did the youtube tags right.

So is that supposed to be Malak and Reven, and the chick Bastila?

EDIT: Btw, that trooper in the red deserves the badass award.

I thought the official end is that Revan, a good guy, takes Bastila, and disappears into the unexplored regions after Malak is killed. Also, I think this takes place 300 years later.

It's too bad it's an MMO. I have no interest in playing an MMO.

Some Old Republic FAQ said that Revan left and never returned. Way to ditch a character! (Or did they?)

Double-shame about the MMOness. Shaaaaaaaame!

Funky but for those of us that didn't really play KotOR[2] it makes it a little confusing about when it's set. :P
nope.
2010-06-14, 12:22 PM #8
The mmo takes place 400 years after kotor. I figure the time frame was set to allow kotor3 to fit between the mmo and the other games. An mmo will rake in a lot more dough so it's the highest priority before they focus on another rpg.

Everything for this game is pretty awesome looking, like the guy trying to kill the sith lord with a knife. Badass.
My blawgh.

Why does it, at the start, talk about 'the empire'? Is this a resurgence of Revan's Sith empire?

The troopers look disappointingly like clone troopers.

Bioware should just cut out the middle man and make a goddamn Star Wars movie.
2010-06-14, 3:18 PM #11
This is the second MMO to ever even catch my interests, but I actually laugh when previews for SWOR cut between these awesome cinematic and the real game. It certainly looks fun, but man I'd have more fun if the combat was rendered out and a bit more intense. MMO combat always makes me give up before the trial is even over. I realize there's more fun to be had at higher levels with more options and whatnot, but after the first 40 hours are watching three or four different animations cycle, the promise of unlocking a few more during end game isn't all that promising. That BioWare is making it is the only reason I'm going to try it.

What is it with force users in SW these days and being able to block everything with their god damn hands? If bastila could block that saber with her hands then it defeats the purpose of having a saber at all.

Ick. I turned it off after the DBZ-esque force powers. No thank you. I was interested in this game, not anymore.

Also whatever happened to there being only two sith? Master and apprentice? (obviously not meaning sith soldiers but actual dark jedi.) I don't think anyone at LA cares about any form of the word canon anymore.
2010-06-14, 4:34 PM #17
That was surprisingly hardcore. If it was in the style of SWFU, I'd play it.

That never happened until like 2000 years after when this game is set, according to wookieepedia.
nope.

Not really. In a Tales of the Jedi graphic novel, Master Vodo-Siosk Baas duels Exar Kun and his lightsaber with a wooden walking cane. The idea is that because he's so strong and skilled that he can channel the force through the stick and use it to block the lightsaber. It's sort of implied that he can't keep it up for long, because after a while Exar Kun breaks it in half.

Same concept. I for one think it's pretty cool, as long as it's not used very often. It's the kind of special, unique skill that should be kept to very specific characters with very special skills and abilities.

Too bad this is going to be an MMO - I don't like the idea of buying a game and then paying more money to continue to play it.

Probably this. I don't think the BioWare writers are that imaginative or as clever as the graphic novel writers.

The only thing I don't like about BioWare's take on the Old Republic is the art style. I loved the art style from the TotJ comics and some of the concept art books:

Massassi temple
[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100114160516/starwars/images/thumb/c/c4/Temple_of_Exar_Kun.jpg/180px-Temple_of_Exar_Kun.jpg]

Some costume designs
[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20050611213138/starwars/images/3/30/Tojtsw5cover.jpg]

Various
[http://images.darkhorse.com/covers/300/s/swtjtpb.jpg]

I'm pretty sure there's a name for this kind of style. The style where futuristic things look "old." And it's goddamn fantastic. BioWare took the easy route and basically tweaked the prequel costumes and scenery. And the Ebon Hawk?? It's just a rearranged Millennium Falcon!

I also think Lucas' (and now BioWare's, it seems) interpretation of Alderaan is boring and unimaginative. OOH LOOK SOME MOUNTAINS AND TREES, WHAT A LOVELY PLANET THIS middle earth ALDERAAN IS. This concept art was WAY better. The concept idea was that the people of Alderaan worked with the natural landscapes wherever possible:

So yes, there's still big honkin Alderaan city
[http://www.cswu.cz/planets/images/alderaan2.jpg]

But also cities built out of petrified killik mounds (?)

This is the coolest, Crevasse city
[http://www.dayofthejedi.com/articles/2008/09/images/prequelconcept/Crevasse_city.jpg]

Yeah, I suppose what we see in the movie (and game?) could only be part of Alderaan. But I'm not counting on it.

Another MMO that I can't afford &/or find the time to play. I do like where they're going w/ it though.
? :)

That was an entertaining video, but since when has the Force become magic missile and lightsabers "make yellow lines on things" sticks?

Not one for MMOs, but between the first SWTOR trailer and the new TF:U trailer, it just pisses me off what a capable director could have done with the Prequel Trilogy.

I was always a fan of the special-effect free force effects. I had a visual tweak mod for JO/JA that, among other things, made lightsabers looks better and removed the silly glow effects on the hands when using powers.

StarWars.com featured a short story written by Robert Chestney, one of the upcoming game's developers (working for the writing department, I presume). I personally thought it was quite terrible and didn't even get past page 1.

http://www.starwars.com/games/videgames/tor_smugglersvanguard/index.html?page=1

Of course, writing short fiction and writing video game scripts are two seperate animals, and I'm not saying that I could have done better given the materials (albeit I probably bloody well could), but still...

Also, Sean Williams is writing a tie-in book for the game. I haven't actually read any of his stuff, but his publishing record makes me believe that he's a pro. Might be fun.

I was actually planning on getting his debut SF novel, Metal Fatigue, at some point in the future....

The trailer looks way to prequelish for me. We all know the prequels sucked so why they make it look that way is beyond me. :suicide:
2010-06-15, 5:50 AM #38
The prequel story sucked more than Pam Anderson on a boat, but it doesn't mean various designs (clone trooper armor and various visual effects) were bad!
