As much as I appreciate his no-BS attitude, I'm very glad he's not from South Carolina. We have enough to worry about here with politics already.

Funny. I was just thinking that it would be awesome if states started to adopt official languages. Kind of follows the terrific advancements being made in Arizona.

One of the leading candidates for governor of CA, Whitman, if elected, has plans to adopt English as the official language, mostly due to the amount of money saved in printing bi/tri/etc/lingual materials.

Even if we did have an official language (and I'm pretty sure a state can't enforce that) it would still be better for everyone to continue to print things in Spanish.
2010-06-18, 8:34 AM #22
That kind of defeats the purpose. The points is, and of course a state can enforce this, you reduce costs by having an official language that state bureaucracies operate in instead of catering to every possible language the citizens may speak. An unintended consequence, and a beneficial one at that, is that many people, finding it harder to drag an English speaking friend with them, may not utilize nearly as many social services saving even more money.

Careful, if you do it at the state level, you might end up with some states with an official language of Spanish!

I was thinking about that, too!

Nope. Catering to Spanish speakers (Lets be honest here; there's a reason those are the two choices most places; the next most common down is far removed.) actually saves the government money. The problem here is you assume that non-English speakers are only taking from the system, because you are racist. If the government can't communicate with people, it can't help them, and they can't help the government.

Your other mistake is thinking that the government should be trying to save money by making it harder to get assistance. The government exists to serve us. All of us. Even the ones who don't speak English. Thankfully there are people in the government who actually understand this, and they know it's cheaper to print a few forms in Spanish than to hire a bunch of interpreters.
2010-06-18, 8:53 PM #28
But, JM, shouldn't these people moving from quite possibly povertous conditions in which they barely afford food and shelter, much less English lessons, instead just learn to speak the language (or, the cheaper option, gtfo our country)?

Actually, this is quite funny, especially in the context you bring up with regards to Spanish, you may find it interesting to find out that I married a foreign national from a Central American country. However, I must confess that I did so to oppress her so I still, clearly, am a racist.

Second, I didn't say government should try to make it harder to get assistance. I just think it might be a wonderful unintended consequence that some people might not take advantage of social programs (which mostly should be done away with anyway) because they will perceive it too difficult to bring an English speaker with them or help them online or completing a form. Plus, why would they hire a bunch of interpreters if they're not even going to bother printing the forms in another language. The original point is you don't do either.

Having a friend/girlfriend/wife of a particular race does not mean you aren't racist. Especially since that person could very well be thinking "yeah, he's a little racist but I can see past that"

Why do you hate Mexicans so much?

I'm curious to see which social programs that you think we should eliminate & why.
? :)

It would be far easier for me to list the ones I think shouldn't be eliminated. As soon as I think of one, that is.

Yeah, I know this is sort of typical left wing thought. Just like minorities (not white males, the other ones) are seen as "self-haters" when they're conservative. I just think it's funny that people call me racist when I'm married to a hispanic and socialize mostly with hispanics. Although hispanic isn't a race, but that's another discussion.

Typical left wing thought? Wow, you just like to label everything don't you? I don't belong to either of your 'wings' so spare me your crap.
You also did nothing to actually counter what I said, unless you think applying a "left wing" label does the trick...

I'm not calling you left wing. I don't know what your ideology is. I just know that that is typical of left wing attacks. I'm not trying to counter your thoughts on racism because that may very well be true in some circumstances. Any response to charges of racism is sort of like the old "how often do you beat your wife" question.
