Do you tip bad waiters?
2010-07-09, 2:24 PM #1
So I went out for lunch with my uncle and aunt and cousins.

Service SUCKED.

The bill was $100+.

My uncle tipped $20. I tried telling him not to leave one.

He was like "you can't do that!" .... The HELL you can't. She sucked. She needs to learn, good service, good money. Bad service, bad money. We were her only table, but she was running food for other tables.

It took about 5 minutes after being seated to put in our drink order. (By then we were ready to order food as well)

She couldn't get it straight who ordered what. "Who had the Corona? Who had the Shocktop? Who had the Rueben?"

Nothing bad happened, but she just sucked balls.

Do you give her a standard tip or no?

I was arguing with my uncle who was paying not to leave her one. She was cute, but not cute enough.

You're moaning about 5 minutes and not remembering who ordered what drink? I advise you to never come to England, you'd probably have a heart attack.

Yeah, that service doesn't sound bad at all.

I'm just a little boy.

Ok, maybe you people in England are retarded, but it's not that hard to assign a number system to seats. The Corona and Rueben is #1. the shocktop and salad is #2.

If you can't figure that out, get the **** outta the restaurant business.

Not knowing who ordered what is pretty bad. It means you SUCK at doing your job.

And ordering drinks when being seated is pretty standard. (When there is no Hostess)

I'd rather have someone check which drink is for who rather than them put the wrong thing in front of me.

That said I can't remember the last time I was actually served by a waiter that sucked.

[Edit: Also if someone had left me the equivalent of $20 when I was a waiter I would have putzed.]
nope.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've never failed to tip for poor service, I just reduce the tip if it sucks, usually down below 10%.

People very rarely give the wrong drinks, but I think absolutely nothing of it if they double check first. Possibly because I'm not as uptight as you.

Here, people generally ask what you want to drink a few minutes after you're seated. Presumably because it gives you time to get settled and have a good look at the drinks menu. So I think absolutely nothing of it if it takes 5 minutes before the order is taken, someone might prompt the staff that they're ready to order, but I'd never think of it as bad service.

If you're ready to order your food after 5 minutes, you must have some pretty epic reading skills or you just order the same crap every time. It usually takes me a good 10 minutes minimum to fully read what's on offer and start to make a decision, and whilst I sometimes take a little longer than the people I eat with, it's never been a problem.

Cultural difference or unreasonable expections? I can't decide.

The only time I haven't tipped was when the bartender took about 20 minutes to pour a guiness. When it finally got to me it was half foam anyway.

I give them two cents. Literally, I mean.

Aye people here usually just give them the small change from the bill or any random shrapnel they have in their pocket.
nope.

I generally scan the menu for anything with 'chicken' in it and then go from there. I'm usually ready w/in a minute after having the menu in front of me. Faster if there's only one chicken dish!

I'll still tip for bad service, but not well. The service described in the OP doesn't sound bad enough that I'd consider reducing my tip, though. For me that usually takes rudeness, unacceptably slow service or getting my order substantially wrong.
If you think the waiters are rude, you should see the manager.

SK --

in your circumstance I'd evaluate the restaurant (don't expect much of anything from diners and the likes) and the new-ness of the employee.

From working in the restaurant business myself I can tell you she may have been taking care of other tables because her co-worker was on break or because they were short staffed for the day. Who knows, but I'm sure it wasnt for ****s and giggles.
2010-07-09, 3:33 PM #15
Servers that are actually bad I will not tip. Sometimes restaurants are overbooked and understaffed, in which case I leave a normal tip, even if the service is poor. I've had some servers absolutely rude, slow service, wrong orders, etc. These people get nothing.

Oh, well, ok, Maybe I was a bit brash, I didn't totally mean leave no tip, just a very low one.

And for the double checking thing, that is very acceptable. She wasn't double checking, she was asking who got what.
2010-07-09, 4:28 PM #17
Here in Finland it's relatively uncommon to ever tip at all.

Also, what's up with tipping based on cuteness? It's irrelevant to the quality of service, and it's highly doubtful you'll be sleeping with them no matter what you give. Maybe if you somehow think that by being cute they made your stay more enjoyable, but they still didn't do a thing for it.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2010-07-09, 4:29 PM #18
Unless I've previously informed her that my fellow diners will try to steal my drink if given the chance, asking "Who got the Corona?" is not a terrible thing, nor is it worth reducing the tip.

I generally go for a "$2 minimum tip", and tip around 20% for decent service. If it's really bad service, I still tip - at a $0.01 maximum. Leaving no tip risks leaving a "this guy is a bad tipper!" message, but I think leaving a penny is a way of me telling them how much they sucked.

I've only done it twice, if I recall correctly, and I can only remember one - we were one of three populated tables in the restaurant and, in a 45 minute period, we saw her three times - once to get our drinks, once to get our order and bring out the drinks, and once to deliver the food and check. Out of a $50/$60 bill, we collectively left $0.56. Didn't go back in about a year after that, though, since she was one of maybe three or four waitresses that works there, and I can't imagine word didn't spread about our tip.

Do they pay them normal minimum wage? Servers in the US get paid below minimum wage with the idea that tips will make up the difference.

Hey, she took all that extra time to get ready for us to look at. That deserves a couple extra bucks.

Yea, it's weird, Americans like to tip everything. Some cultures it's an insult. Here you gotta tip everyone. It sucks.

You tip the bell boy. You tip the valet. You tip the X and the Y and the Z. frak.

Well, and maybe the odd taxi driver depending on the change and if he was a sulky ******* or not. And how drunk I am.

Asking who ordered what when it gets to the table isn't bad isn't bad service. Getting the order wrong, taking forever to take your order when there is no reasonable reason, letting your food sit after it's ready, not refilling drinks and not coming back to check if everything is okay after the food gets to your table is bad service.

This. Only I'll usually tip *very* well if the service is exceptional. I once tipped $30 on a $40 bill. I left the waitress a note on the receipt thanking her for her professionalism and great service.

I usually leave ~10% for bad services. Not leaving a tip at all would just be a dbag thing to do.

And Squirrel -- You seem awfully worked up over this. Don't have a heart attack too young. You have a poor taste in sports teams, but that doesn't mean we want you to die.

Andrea .. I don't recall the last time I've been to a restaurant with a bus boy.. Every job I've waited at I've cleared the table. Sometimes we have food runners, but never bus boys.

I get worked up over stuff. I'm stubborn and arrogant. That's why I'm single :P

Avenger ... Yes. I do believe it is bad service. This is the first time I've ever seen a waiter/waitress ask who got what.

I'm pretty slow, I can't remember things sometimes. Fried my brains on drugs. And I never got an order messed up when I waited.
2010-07-09, 6:59 PM #35
If it's really really bad service I will tip a few coins just to get a point across. Otherwise I tip 10-20% if it's really good service then more. The most I ever tipped was 15$ on a 12$ bill.

Good service = 25-30%. I tip well if they deserve it.
Bad service = the change in my pocket if paying cash, $1 if by card.

I usually have to argue with who I am with to leave less than they want.

For bad service I won't leave any tip, but for good service I'll leave an awesome tip! Actually, I think the real reason I'm a great tipper is because I'm horrible at math and tend to overcompensate...but anyways... >_>
