Pick my next game/series
2010-07-25, 1:57 PM #1
I'm feeling indecisive, so I want you guys to pick my next game to play.

I just finished Deus Ex yesterday, CoD4:MW before that, and the older CoD games as well as the Medal of Honor series, so they aren't on the list. I think I played through the whole DF/JK/JO/JA series before that, so they didn't make the cut either.

The one with the most votes by noon tomorrow is the weiner.

[Edit: added list since I fail at polls]

  1. KoToR
  2. Half-Life series
  3. UT3 (or even UT2004)
  4. Splinter Cell series (well, first 3 games)
  5. Lego Star Wars (both trilogies)
  6. SW Battlefront
  7. Thief series
  8. SW Republic Commando
  9. Defense Grid (a casual game)
  10. Mechwarrior 4 & Black Knight Expansion
  11. Team Fortress 2 (never played it)
"Harriet, sweet Harriet - hard-hearted harbinger of haggis."

Ever play the Thief games? They're masterfully executed, with a fantastic world, fantastic gameplay and fantastic story telling. Except for the third game, that one's only okay.

Holy crap. I got sidetracked talking to my wife about my daughter's lack of keyboarding skills and the poll kicked me out.

Here are the options (and yes, Emon, love me some Thiefy goodness):

  1. KoToR
  2. Half-Life series
  3. UT3 (or even UT2004)
  4. Splinter Cell series (well, first 3 games)
  5. Lego Star Wars (both trilogies)
  6. SW Battlefront
  7. Thief series
  8. SW Republic Commando
  9. Defense Grid (a casual game)
  10. Mechwarrior 4 & Black Knight Expansion
  11. Team Fortress 2 (never played it)

TF2 gets a big recommendation from me.

I'll try and grab the Thief games soon, too, I've only ever played the demo for 3, I believe. Or maybe that was Thiaf. Or did that even come out yet? Not sure.

Emon's recommendations have always worked out for me before .

System Shock 2 is also fantastic. It had many of the people from the first two Thief games on it. They use the same engine and have a similar feel to them. Probably the best cyberpunk/steampunk first person shooters ever made.

Thief, Thief 2 and System Shock 2 need patches to run on modern OSes. If you're really interested in playing them I can point you in the right direction. They're easy to get working, but you have to be aware of the fixes. For SS2, there's an all-in-one third party patcher that gets it ready for play. I think there'e something similar for Thief.

If you want an adventure game, check out Grim Fandango. It tops every other game in the genre ever made... Monkey Island, Space Quest, Loom, Day of the Tentacle, peanuts! The story, the artwork, the dialog and voice acting, all perfect. The puzzles are intelligent and fun. The characters are unique and emotionally involving. Pretty much everything about it is perfect. The worst part of the whole game is that the controls are little hard to learn at first. Yeah, that's really the only problem with it.

System Shock 2, Stalker (With LURK 1.1) Call Of Pripyat (With Atmosfear 2.0)

***I meant for you guys to pick something from the list.***

I can't buy any games right now, I'm broke.

@Emon: I've got the patches and necessary links to get Thief and it's ingame movies to work, so that's no problem (I've done it before).

@Saberopus: Thiaf isn't out yet. Ion Storm Montreal is solely focused on DX3 right now.

@Landfish: I ain't got those, that's why they aren't on the list. :/

Oh I see. Well, KotOR is awesome so I guess go with that.

Might as well start with KOTOR...great game, can't really go wrong.

Half-Life series, then Splinter Cell

TF2, but only after you play everything else. Cause it is so awesome and neverending, that you'll never stop playing.

Either half-life series or kotor

KOTOR, Splinter Cell, or Thief would all be excellent choices.

Well, I wouldn't say Thief 2 had fantastic story telling. Thief 1 was designed around its story, whereas Thief 2's story was designed around the levels, and some would say it suffered for it. It does have fantastic levels, though.

There are some aspects of Thief 3 that make up for its shortcomings. Mainly, the Cradle.

Regardless, all three are worth playing, and it's probably a good way to follow up Deus Ex, particularly if you enjoyed playing as a stealthy character.

I haven't played it in years but I still thought it was pretty awesome.

And actually, I'm just now getting around to playing Thief 3. I think I tried playing it at least two times before, but ended up upgrading Windows (first to Vista, then to 7) and forgot to back up my saved games. I've only gotten to the captain's mansion, but so far it's pretty good. The loading zones suck major ballsack, but the atmosphere is pretty incredible. The player controls don't feel the same, and it's too easy to fall off things or get stuck in odd corners. I'm running a patch to remove loot glint and get rid of that awful blue glow on usable items (it makes it a faint yellow like T1/T2), as well as getting rid of arrow trails. Other than that the only thing that really bothers me is moving through the streets. Avoiding the city watch is stupid (you're a master thief, they should not know your face!)... also, you should be moving mostly by rooftop like in Thief 2, but I guess that was just too hard for them to make.

Oh! Check out Thief 2x, it's a fan made expansion for Thief 2. It's a lot of fun, and has some great missions, including a really creepy abandoned mental hospital. It's about full length and very well done. The cutscenes could use some work but the level design was pretty awesome from what I remember.

Another vote for Thief here.

And when you have some money to spare pick up No One Lives Forever.

Thief Wins
by one vote!

KOTOR took an early lead and I was prepping to install, but Thief made a comeback in the stretch.

It's just as well. Thief is my favorite game of all time anyway.

I'll be starting with Thief Gold.

Thank you Massassi!

Yeah, I've played Thief2x. An amazing fan-made tale. I seem to remember a brothel the most for some reason...

The goddamn Cradle in the third game was creepy as ****.

So... who has a copy of Thief II they want to give me?
2010-07-26, 6:01 PM #35
One of my favourite parts in Thief2x is when you nearly cross paths with Garrett.

There are actually lots of other fan missions that are entirely worth playing, and vastly exceed Thief2x in terms of quality (though not length). If anyone's interested, I could throw together a list of recommended ones.

I've got a few on a DVD somewhere. I remember one FM that was monochromatic and loaded with haunts. Scared the crap out of me.

I'd love that. Likewise, I know most of the good (or at least the very tip top best) System Shock 2 fan missions if anyone wants those.

You know what one of the big mistakes in Thief 3 is? Too many enemies. I'm in the Kurshok Citadel...why are there so many enemies around? I thought it was going to be more like the old city from Thief 1, which is incredible. The lack of enemies increased tension because you never knew what was coming up.

At least it's not like every modern horror game that tries to be "cinematic." You know, if you're a game producer and you try to make a "cinematic" game it's a pretty good indication you're a hack and should be fired immediately.

These missions are gorgeous. Lots of atmosphere.

The Inverted Manse

http://cosas.ttlg.com/ Circle of Stone and Shadow. This is a mission pack still in development, and it has been in development for a long time. Only two missions are out, and they're both really well done. A friend of mine, who I introduced to Thief, did some cutscene art in the second mission (Mission X).

Ominous Bequest and Broken Triad (a series. Play them in order!):
