:omg:

Neato! I haven't used google in a while, how long has it made it so you don't need to click search?

I would have never though to make a search like this, but it's really so simple and useful it makes you wonder why it hasn't been done before.

The first time I saw it, it frightened me.

What...?

Are you talking about just hitting enter? or the drop down suggestion list? Both of which have been there for some time. Or are you referring to the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button which has also been there a very long time...

Nope. Visit Google.com now.

It's called Google Instant, and it basically predicts what you're going to search for, and automatically loads the results below the search box as you go. You don't even need to press enter.

Bonus shortcut: If, while typing, you find what you want in the suggestions, you can highlight it by pressing up/down arrow keys, and then hit the right arrow key to go to the first result (aka, a "I'm feeling lucky search").

Apparently it's still rolling out to some users. Also, it requires IE8, IE7/6 are not supported.

And seriously Andrew L? IE6 for ... SECURITY REASONS?

Is that why you didn't google "How 2 throw bachelor partay?" Security. ;)

I really like this feature, though.

Lets improve user experience by making typing lag. :|

This also can not be friendly to their servers.
2010-09-08, 1:28 PM #12
I don't have any typing lag.

When you get 1 billion users a week I doubt you will worry about server traffic.

I can't remember the last time I actually went to google, I just use the searchbar thing in firefox.
nope.

I was about to say—make it work using my firefox google search bar. :P Maybe open a new tab or something..

Neat. I haven't used it to actually search for anything new yet (to try it out all I did was start typing Zero Punctuation, because it was the first thing in my quick links that I saw) but it looks interesting.

I just tried it and noticed a slight lag although the slight lag in characters appearing seemed trivial when search results appeared virtually instantly with no need to load a search results page.

You do, but at that point you have an absurd infrastructure that can support it.

How long until google can scan your brain waves and negate the need to type search queries?

Soon, you'll be able to dial the "operator" and instantly learn things like how to pilot a b212 helicopter!

If I used the google home/search page for searches, it would probably annoy me. As it is, it's not all that useful. It's no more useful than the drop down suggestions they had previously. Saving an "enter" key stroke is trivial compared to having to move my hand over to the mouse anyway. For example, if I want to search for "jedi knight" I have to type as far as "jedi k" before it shows up in the list. At that point I hit down arrow and enter and it loads the results. This isn't any faster than when it just suggested search terms instead of showing you them. Why do I care about john l scott realty or jetblue when I'm trying to search for jedi knight?

So anyway, it's not any faster. It doesn't seem any slower either, just more distracting. I guess now people will try to get to the top of search results for partial strings like "j", "je", and "jed" in hopes that I will get distracted from my search about jedi knights and decide to take a trip to a nearby john l scott realty office using a ticket from jetblue.

Brian, you're missing the point. It's for refining searches. If you don't know the exact query you need, you can refine it and have the results show in real time without the page reloading. It's not about saving an enter keypress.

What Emon said. Besides, it learns from your search history as well. And although it may not always get jedi k = jedi knight right off the bat, it does do things like get w = weather, which is pretty nice.

Generally, the complete lack of page loads is pretty substantial in time savings. Also, I don't think Google would have bothered to add such a huge load on their servers if it didn't really save any time :p
2010-09-09, 8:14 PM #29
w = wangs in vagagas on my google search. weather?
2010-09-09, 8:24 PM #30
Maybe it's predictive based on your browsing habbits.

Well, I use iGoogle and, of course, the predictive feature isn't there. Once the search results pop up I arrive, of course, at the normal google results page which is predictive. I tried the same with the google/firefox default homepage and the same is true.

I think it's awesome, adjusting your search queries because you get the wrong results on the fly
2010-09-10, 2:23 PM #37
It hilights the sheer amount of garbage on the internet, though. Isn't there a way to filter yahoo answers out of all your results?
2010-09-10, 2:45 PM #38
I'm pretty sure there are Greasemonkey scripts for that. Not sure if they work with the new page though.

Add "-site:answers.yahoo.com" to your search.
