Star Wars in 3d about a year and a half away...

No no, not like that. Yours was done with post-processing on real data. The unique images are generated from 3D data, not extrapolated from 2D.

I imagine ILM will get it pretty good, I'm just wondering if that's a reason many 3D movies suck -- half assed in post production for a quick buck.

I heard that clash of the titans was really bad in that regard. Apparently the 3d was absolutely horrid.

Despite my misgivings about the 3D and the Special Editions, I'm sure I'll probably go see them all again.

Heck, I'd probably watch all 6 of them in a row (if any movie theaters offer that option like they did with Trilogy Tuesday and Lord of the Rings).

Nope. There is only 1 image. Everything is rendered once to a single image and the 3D effect is created from that single image. No second cameras, no second projections. It's all done with 2D data (if you don't count the depth buffer, which, knowing ILM's expertise, can probably make for a film). ;)

Though you may be right. ILM is a damn good visual FX company, so I have no doubts their 3D effect will look top-notch, but you may be right about the others. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them popped it in just to say they've got 3D.

I wouldn't doubt that ILM would create depth buffers for that stuff. However, other films tend to rush the post 3d process which you can read about in that link I posted earlier. I'm pretty sure in that workflow they just go through and say "well this one object will be 3 feet from the camera" which is why they end up looking flat.

You absolutely count it! It's generated from a pixel shader using depth information, not just from a 2D bitmap.

They don't "make a depth buffer" but I know what you mean. And yes, I was referring to Piranha 3D and crap like that, not ILM.

I hate 3d glasses in movies because I have glasses that I have to wear because my vision is worse than 20/400 and its uncomfortable to put them over my normal glasses.

Contacts are too much maitanence

30 day&night contacts disagree. Pop them in, wait a month, pop them out and replace.

Even regular contacts aren't that much more hassle than glasses.

People with poor vision should wear contacts. Glasses suck and make people look like dorks.

I'll likely see them all, it will be interesting to see what changes during this addition. I watched the DVD recently and noticed some of the effects left over from the special edition looked pretty crappy in regards to effects today. If the scenes have to be that way they might as well touch them up and make it look good.
I really hope they get rid of the cluttered feeling Lucas has been incorporating in his film-making in the last few years. With the Special Edition he had a lot of shots which distracted the view from the narrative, flying robots, gophers, etc.

Don't worry, Kirb's. Just tell her how you feel. You have a lot of great qualities and if she doesn't love you for who you are she isn't the right one and it's time to move on.
