Earth Like Planet Found!

20 Light Years from here, which I suppose is relatively close. Still kinda far, but whatever :ninja:

Anyway it's a fairly interesting discovery, even if the scientist is claiming 100% chance for life on the planet.

Considering the size of the universe and that we've found meteorites with common amino acids on them, I think it's pretty safe to say there's life somewhere in some form.

Don't they have these EARTH-LIKE PLANET FOUND events almost every week?

The person or persons who "finds" a planet that could potentially harbor life gets a boat load of prestige. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was a rat-race.

They find planets in the 'habitable zone' quite often, but not many of them appear to have (from what we can tell with our limited tech) water or other traits needed for life.

The most interesting thing about this one to me would be the life that developed on opposite sides of the planet.

Well, life is a surprisingly resilient entity. If lifeforms could be found in toxic, atmosphere-ravaged hostile environments like in the state of New Jersey, it could easily live in some capacity on a rocky planet in space.

Haha, New Jersey jokes are too easy.

Did they find it in Pelham, New York?
nope.

Er, not sure what you mean. One side is scorching hot, and the other side is freezing cold. There's a "twilight zone" (ha ha) ring around the middle where the planet could support life, but too far to either side and conditions get pretty hostile pretty fast.

Unless you're implying Star Trek style lava monsters on one side and Hothlike Taun Tauns and Wompa's on the other.

They don't even know if there's water on the planet. All they know is its mass and distance from its star.

No no no, the article seems to suggest the planet has a atmosphere and is in perfect distance from the sun. This could mean that its temperatures would be similar to Earth. Basically, life would evolve on one side not knowing darkness, and the other, not knowing light.

Imagine if we had never known what night is, we probably would be quite different, if we would even exist at all. It also brings to question, is the other side of that planet (if it had plant life) a baron wasteland? So much to learn from a place like that if it did actually have life.

The article didn't mention that at all

if the planet had life it stands to reason it could survive or even flourish in darkness. just look at the deep seas, or caves.

It doesn't pass in front of its star, so we have no way of determining whether or not it has liquid water and (by implication) an atmosphere.

That's not how science works.

1.) DaisyWorld,
2.) Atmospheric convection.

I would imagine a tidally locked world has a pretty high likelihood of having extremely harsh conditions.

I inferred that from this BBC article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11444022

Quote:
The planet's average surface temperature is estimated to be between -12C and -31C.

But unlike Earth, this alien world has one side always facing its sun and the other side constantly in the dark. So in-between the two sides, between shadow and light, there could be an area where life could potentially thrive.

"Any emerging life forms would have a wide range of stable climates to choose from and to evolve around, depending on their longitude," said Dr Vogt.

It will probably take like 300 years traveling at the speed of light to get there, how are we going to achive that?
" I am the Lizard King, I can do anyhthing... "
2010-09-30, 2:56 PM #29
Uhhhhhh.... if it's 20 light years away, it would take 20 years at the speed of light.

Yeah, that information was given in the first sentence of the thread.

I apologize for my lack of memory.

I'm fairly certain there are plenty of ways around it to get past the great distances. It's not impossible.

He specifically asked how to travel at the speed of light. That's impossible.

Sorry, but I'm obviously not as versed in this subject as Massassi, and I'm curious.

You'd need an infinite amount of energy to accelerate to the speed of light. Your mass would also become infinite.

In other words, you'd have to be 10% as massive as mb.

Unless tachyons exist. We're currently down to a few solar masses to move a hydrogen atom across the galaxy, but the math is improving all the time.
