because we need a few milligrams of exotic matter to create a warp field

Don't we also need the energy of a billion suns

Yes, we're down to a few solar masses to move a hydrogen atom across the galaxy.

EDIT: Oh, are you talking about that completely hypothetical branch of string theory? There's no evidence that would even work, even if the numbers could be manipulated to describe remotely feasible energy requirements.

You mean as opposed to that experimentally proven branch of string theory?

No. Alcubierre drive is based on general relativity, not string theory.

in another 30 years we'll have new scientific theories that'll hint at even more methods of FTL travel, and more after that. Hey relax guy, just play scifi games, just as imaginitive.
Code:
if(getThingFlags(source) & 0x8){
  do her}
elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{
  do a dude}

Didn't you drop out of physics or something?

This thread must be joncy's domain...cause I think that what was impossible 50 years ago with science fiction related technology most of it has become somewhat possible, but thats all my two cents I want to throw in here with the troll bridge.

yeah this is it. it is pretty ignoratn to think that there is no life out there oyu know. Its like ignornat to say hey there are no aliens. its ignorant to believe that it is physically impossible to travel faster than light bending spacetime. were not the only ones.

While it seems likely that the universe would produce many intelligent civilizations, there's no reason to expect them to be around at the same time.

Also,

Sorry I could have worded that better. I am aware that string theory is at this point entirely theoretical.

I thought you were referring to this paper: http://www.scribd.com/doc/1251197/Warp-Drive-A-New-Approach

Quote:
The main focus of the paper is to demonstrate that the manipulation of the radius of one, or more, of the extra dimensions found in higher dimensional quantum gravity theories, especially those that are based on or inspired by string/M-theory, creates alocal asymmetry in the cosmological constant which could be used to propel a space vehicle.

Either way, none of these technologies have yet been found to have even theoretical merit, let alone experimental.

Scientific advances help us advance because they help us understand more fully how the universe works, and consequently allow us to do more with it as a result of that knowledge. However, scientific advancement can only tell us how things are, they cannot change them to suit us. Just as science helps us understand what we can do, but it also shows us what we cannot. It is not reasonable to have any particular expectation from entirely unknown future breakthroughs. Advancement of scientific understanding cannot be confused with the more predictable process of using engineering to harness that understanding.

Note I think 90% of the people saying the "ignorant" thing comes from that interview with Stargate SG-1's Michael Shanks.

The stargate movie was amazing. I almost never watched that show, i hated it so much. I saw 1 whole episode where, they are trapped on some alien matrix world or something (yah pretty original). It was like watching a slightly less gay version of Star Trek. Sci-fi channel (Now the sy-fy channel) used to have soo many (and still dose) original shows, most sucked.

Early Farscape..... Now that's the ****.

War does not require you to believe in it.

Im not a liberal, but I think we could live without war to, its really getting old, and this is coming from a guy that was in the Army. The reason I made that statement was because Antony had earlier described himself as a liberal, but he wants to see some ballistic action. It seems Ironic.

War will never truly cease as it is simply a form of conflict. On the other hand, the oft spoken of and exceptionally vague form of peace known as "World Peace" (By my definitions peace between nation states) is certainly achievable...but likely requiring war as the only way it's happening is if there is only one nation which would imply the destruction and/or annexation of all the others.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
