Yeah, it's obvious that the time difference is the big reason for a lack of an outcry with multiplayer WW2 games.
Regardless of the time difference, however, the comparative lack of an outcry for WW2 games still paints those who were opposed to have playing taliban characters in this particular game in a negative light. It shows that when they say it's offensive, they are really saying "It's offensive to me," rather than "It's offensive to someone and I'm speaking up for them."
It does make their argument appear pretty self-centered and makes it readily apparent that they couldn't give a crap about what other people find offensive.
Wasn't there some game that took place in Afghanistan, and was actually partially developed and designed by veterans of the combat there, who had selected a video game as an effective means of telling their story? Yet when news about it was released, and the game it self came out, it still garnered considerable outcry from the public that it was insensitive to Afghanistan veterans?
