No trust me, those people over there are offended.

I get spoken for all the time, mostly because people ask etiquette questions to the people around me who always seem to suggest something they themselves don't even do.

True, you hold the smoke in your mouth, you don't actually take it into your lungs

I knew a guy who inhaled cigar smoke because he swore that he would get higher off it and wasn't getting his full money's worth if he didn't inhale.

This guy also got fired for selling booze without IDing a guy in front of the store owner, so...

He probably smoked those lame ass black and milds.

It's pretty hard to inhale a good bit of a real cigar and not cough until you puke.

What exactly is the pipe thing, for those of us that don't know a word of french?

I don't get the pipe picture. Somebody explain. It just looks like a pipe to me.
2010-10-05, 10:21 AM #51
it's an art thing

a picture of a pipe with the words "this is not a pipe" because it's not an actual pipe but an artist's rendition of a pipe
eat right, exercise, die anyway

That's because it is.

It's not that simple.

Does ceci (this) refer to the pipe, the sentence, or the painting? The sentence is obviously not a pipe, and makes no sense without the presence of the pipe. The painting is not a pipe, but the pipe is obviously a pipe.

It's demonstrating self reference and ambiguity, and other things as well but I'm not smart enough to understand all the other implications.

I also read an article a long time ago that used the picture to explain how some tribal languages caused logical thinking itself to become ambiguous and referential. To where a person of that tribe wouldn't be able to comprehend or explain whether or not it is a pipe or a painting of a pipe based only on his language and not his intelligence. I only half explained that, but you get the idea. I can't find the original article in my SU either.

I forget who it was who said to show them what a chair is. Just the basic item "chair" and said it's impossible to do, because there are so many different types of chairs, not to mention there are many items that can be used as a chair. So in the end it's impossible to just think of what a chair is, because there is no definite example.

There was a tribe in Australia that communicated all sense of direction, place and location using only cardinal directions. Instead of saying their left hand, they'd say their south hand, or instead of saying the bowl is next to the rock, they'd say the bowl is northwest of the rock.

Plato said that. It's called Platonic forms.

I find it hilarious.
