My conscience has gotten the best of me and I want to apologize to everyone here that has witnessed my "douchebagery" or my over defensiveness when I get flamed by a member of Massassi. I guess I need to realize its just words that are written to me and not personal insults from people that know me. I can take alot of criticism, but my intolerance is when people misjudge my intelligence. I have an Art degree for god sakes.

I enjoy being a part of the massassi community, because JK was more than just a computer game for me, its my favorite Star Wars expanded Galaxy story, and Star Wars has always been the love of my life. So Im going to do what I think would be dignified and Im going to ban myself until Project Nar is finished (2-3 weeks I predict) I am going to punish myself by self banning.

I will especially not post anything in the future if I somehow become accidently intoxicated. (drunk posting) Its strange that dalf didnt ban me last friday. I apologize to everyone here, especially to Emon.

Jon'C if you read this post you are the only one that I will not apologize to.

I hear artists get to nail a lot, so that makes sense.

It would, except artists don't get BAs....

What is with these certifications as of late.

Aptitude tests results! Distribution curve, look here! Took this <insert college course>! 4 years of studying <insert subject>!

Darth Dan, I'm sorry that I've taken potshots at you a few times. Thank you for your apology; a little civility is pretty nice to see around here for a change.

(But bringing up an art degree to defend your intelligence is just asking for trouble. I have a degree in music, and that's a testament to my stupidity more than anything else.)

Darth Dan dislikes me because I told him his knowledge of the natural sciences predates the works of Aristotle.

Well, at least a degree is an accomplishment of some sorts. An aptitude test just basically says you may or may not be good at somethings but since you're taking this you probably won't ever actually accomplish anything.

I think DD has been going through a few things lately as well as over a period of time. He has shown a recent change in behavior that he has noted himself and I'm glad he's taken a step to acknowledge it. I mean to go from a relatively minor participant to the "village idiot" in such a short period of time is an accomplishment by itself but it indicates some personal trouble.

I wish you the best Darth Dan but leave the village idiot stuff to me. It is my destiny.

Maybe Darth Dan meant the whole 'I have an arts degree' thing to be a joke.
I hope so.

having an arts degree is perfectly respectable, if your planning on being an art teacher. its kind of like getting a philosophy degree. or adopting a redhead.

Having any degree right now is fairly useless, unless there is the word "doctor" or some variant thereof somewhere in your title.
2010-10-18, 9:17 AM #19
Art degrees are completely worthless. I know about 200 people who can vouch for this.

A degree is never enough to get a job. You have to actually be good at what you do. Getting a degree can be part of the journey of becoming good at what you do, but it's not necessary. Though, at least in science and engineering it's usually required, because most employers won't talk to you otherwise.

You mean a visual or fine arts degree? They're only as worthless as people make them. Every year people graduate from RIT's film/animation program. Some of the get no job or subpar jobs. The very best that actually care about what they do end up working for Pixar or somewhere similar.

Having a piece of paper that says you can do something doesn't mean anything. But the skills that are (or can be) learned through the process are invaluable. It's entirely what you make of it.

Yeah, it's a pretty sad state of affairs. I was reading somewhere about how the DoD, NSA etc. are trying to get all the hotshot CS/related graduates but they all go to Google, Microsoft or some fancy Silicon Valley startup. Of course they do. Those people don't want to deal with the bureaucratic nonsense and mediocrity of government jobs.

I was mostly referring to the fact that when customers have no other options (who else can you get your electricity from?) you don't have to perform well because there are no other options. Every try to call the gas company? Ever go to the DMV? etc etc.

But yeah, I've heard the same things for science careers, though government always pay themselves a lot and give themselves good benefits. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows a management/business type job for the feds or state is the way to go.
2010-10-18, 9:28 AM #26
Yeah the benefits are absurd. And I mean, there are plenty of smart people working for the government, and you can certainly make a great career out of it. But you have to have a high tolerance for bull****.

I'm getting a film degree because I have nothing else to do.

Seriously, I always feel inadequate because I'm not studying electrochemicalbiopharmaarchitectural engineering.

And Dan, good luck to you. It takes a big man to apologize and stuff, so you should be alright.

I can vouch for this. I went to film school and achieved my diploma with honors and I'm still having an incredible amount of difficulty finding work. It could be because I am trying to get into film/tv which is the issue, since there is literally too much competition for the jobs.

However, I've even been put in contact with some really high up people: Casting Directors (Juli Ann Kay for example), Producers (Alan Levine) and the such, and still none have resulted in a steady job.

I worked on a season of a new TV series called Burn My Mortgage, but we are only in production for 3 - 5 months in the summertime and currently are waiting for a greenlight on the second season if it even gets that far. For the most part, I've worked for free whenever I have been doing work. That, so far since my graduation, has been my only paying job.

I can also vouch for the other 200 members of my class that are also in the same situation as me. There are probably only 5 or 6 people with a current steady job in the industry, and even they are only working as PA's for a small town sports network. I can honestly say a lot of the people I've met didn't even attain their "arts degree".

Artists get vocational degrees. BFAs or something similar (e.g. BCA, B. Arch.) If you talk to someone and they went to "art school," this is what they graduated with.

"Art" degrees, or a B.A., means you earned a degree in something that is a traditional Liberal Art (philosophy, literature, language, history, politics,) or just something too oblique to fit with any other faculty. A B.A. from a respectable school will have nothing to do with the technical execution of an art form.

Sorry for your not understanding higher education.
