Yeah, pretty much.
When I was in Hungary a few years back, me and a couple of friends ended up in this small cellar pub in Keszthely. We were just thinking about ordering a few more beers when suddenly we were brought this can of drink and three glasses. I asked the waitress what it was and she explained it was a mix of coke and wine.
She pointed over to this old punker sitting in the opposite booth, who raised his thumb to us and gave us a wink. He didn't seem to want to talk or anything because he just went on doing his thing. So we just raised our glasses to him and drank. We all thought it was terrible, but we didn't want to seem ungrateful so we politely managed to finally empty the entire can. I think we had at least three glasses each, and it was awful, haha.
So we're just thinking about leaving as we get brought another full can. Same thing happens. Guy gives us a thumbs up and a wink, then goes about his business. So after finally finishing the second can, I walk over to thank him for the drinks. Turns out he doesn't speak a word of English. I tried to explain to him that we're all very drunk and that we really need to leave. (In actuality we were shuddering with the thought of having to down another can of that foul concoction, but yeah...) However, he didn't seem to mind at all that we were leaving.
It was just such a friendly and hospitable thing to do. Keszthely is only a small town and I could tell there were only locals in that bar except for us. I just can't imagine that happening in my own country, such friendliness to tourists. Then again, I don't live in the countryside, which might explain a lot.
Afterwards I felt a little bad we didn't order some drinks for the guy in return, but strange enough we never thought of it in the oddness of the moment.
