Do you own your name's domain name?
2011-03-24, 3:11 PM #1
Do you own your own name's domain name? If not, is it available? If so, why haven't you bought it?

Some pastor has it now and if he didn't own it, some rolling stones fansite would.

Somebody owns and uses my first and last name.com

My full name is available but I see no reason to own it.

I don't have much reason to get one myself. I'd rather have a shorter name.

As I was registering massassi.net I found lozier.com available and didn't buy it. Regret it. After that I have no need for anything else. If someone wants to find me they can search google for me.
2011-03-24, 4:19 PM #8
I always thought the "I have no need for it" answer was dumb. Who knows if you'll want to use it in 10 years? Or maybe someone will make a porn site out of it and it'll rank #1 on hits for your name.

If I live to be 100, I will have spent $900 on my domain name. I think that's a worthy investment.

If someone buys my name and makes a famous porn site out of it, good for them. I don't find my name to be a particularly good site name. I don't know if it's registered right now and I don't care to bother finding out.

I don't see the point in buying it because I have no use for it and in 10 years time I'll be 6 feet under.
nope.

In case this wasn't clear, I'm going to buy the domain names of everyone in this thread who doesn't own theirs, and I'm going to make you regret it. :awesome:

In 10 years the internet is going to look a lot different. I'm guessing we're all going to have profile/contact pages verified by state/federal government like a driver's license or federal ID card.

If someone is searching for me and they find porn, I think they will notice it's not me in the porn and figure they landed on the wrong site.

firstlast.com = furniture retailer and interior design

.org & .net = unused

fullname.com, .org, .net = unused

All this surprises me, since there are in my state alone 431 people on Facebook and other online places with my first and last name, and 17 in my state with my full name... that I know of.

Parked by GoDaddy. I refuse to buy from GoDaddy.

I have firstinitiallast.net but all variants of my full name are available.

Why would I own my domain name?
2011-03-24, 8:47 PM #19
Anything that I would put up at a domain that was my name would be infinitely better suited to a domain name that doesn't sound like it was chosen by a twelve year old.
2011-03-24, 8:53 PM #20
Yup and its my name. Probably owned it for about 5 years now.

Someone owns the domain name for my last name. No one does for my full name.

I see no need for having it.

Eh, I used to own it, but I let it expire as I really had no use for it. Now I have other domain names that I associate with myself but my name isn't too common.

I wouldn't want my name's domain name. I always thought it was pretentious to have a website by your full name. I do, however, possess <firstnamelastname>@gmail.com. :) I got a really early invite while it was still available.

If one were to do this what would one do.

GoDaddy's advertising makes me uncomfortable so don't suggest them.

maxsalnikov.com, haven't really been using it much lately. Dark Side of Kibou sucked, Ecotower has good potential, but no way it's done until the end of March. 3 days, and not even the first draft. Busy doing other things, including writing occasionally fun, but not overly fulfilling stuff for money. Meh.

I really love Dreamhost. You can register a domain name for free, and their control panel is simple and easy to use. They also have a nice set of one-press installs (So you can install wordpress by simply clicking a button, instead of having to go through and upload/install/configure everything yourself)

Yours totally isn't loading. As an advertisement for why it's cool to own your name's domain, I vote fail.

(Edit: never mind. Turns out I fail. You have lots of broken images though)

For gods sake DO NOT GET DREAMHOST. EVER. Tons of services offer the same thing they do. But here's what DREAMHOST does that others don't:

A. Absolutely horrendous uptime.
B. Horrendous customer support.
C. Extremely oversold servers, to the point where many load ridiculously slow or not at all.
D. They have made idiotic billing mistakes, such as accidentally billing people for an entire extra year! Their response? "whoops, fat thumbs". Literally, that was their apology, and it took many people filing chargebacks and threatening lawsuits to get their money back. This took months to resolve.
E. You may get a free domain name, but it is HORRIBLY hard to actually transfer that domain name should you decide to move. They like to hold your domain name hostage.

They are, without exaggeration, the worst hosting company in existence. I would highly recommend ANYONE over them. I cannot stress this enough.

That said, if you just want domain names, use http://hover.com

If you just want a blog, use http://squarespace.com

My domains are registered through godaddy (Free dns management and danica patrick is kinda hot)

Got a dedicated centos box at a local co-location so I haven't needed shared hosting in years.

Since we're talking about hosting, does anyone know a good VPS host? I can't really use shared because I need to install nginx, postgres, a bunch of cpan modules, etc.
