PC games made in the last 5 years worth playing
2011-04-12, 1:10 PM #1
What the title says: list your reccomendations, please. I just got a new computer, but I have no idea what games I should consider playing that I couldn't before. Although I still need to remember again the one older game Tracer keeps wanting me to play, but I always forget what it's called.

I already intend to play Portal 2, so no need to mention that.

I'd say mass effect but I hear the PC DRM stuff is wack

Portal
Stalker
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
(What PC DRM, what are you talking about)

The kind that makes the game unplayable on a decent number of computers.

Portal
Left 4 Dead
Dawn of War 2
Crysis, but only if you can get it really cheap
Borderlands
Torchlight
Oblivion (5 years and 3 weeks)

Definitely Fallout 3, and the entire Orange Box set if you've somehow not played that (that's Portal, Team Fortress 2, and all of Half-Life 2).

Borderlands is pretty fun.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are also excellent. I highly recommend buying on Steam to avoid most of the worst DRM situations, for all games.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 absolutely! I'm a little over half way through my second ME playthrough now. The worst of the DRM was removed after 3 days due to complaints, and no special DRM is used if you get the Steam version.

I will second mass effect 1 and 2, oblivion (though I know you've told me before that type of fantasys not your thing), fallout 3 and expansions, fallout new vegas and expansions.

One not yet listed is the witcher enhanced edition. I think, if all the games I've said, you might enjoy it the most. Nontraditional fantasym great story, great gameplay, great graphics.

Pretty much this, some very minor exceptions

When did Galciv come out? Play that.

Stalker. It get's off to a slow start, but it gets really, really good. It may be one of the best realized and envisioned atmospheric game settings ever in my opinion. I bought it just recently. The mods that improve the graphics/lighting and weather effects are great and really give an updated vibe to an otherwise aging game. I saw Call of Pripyat at Target today for 10 bucks, I think I will be picking that up too at that price. That's my recommendation.

I bought my coworkers comp for 200$ circa 2008 so I can finally play some real games. I picked up Crysis too. I can't figure out what is so great about that game. It's bland incarnate, but it sure looks good.

I call bull ****.

Uhmmmmmmm torchlight and mass effect 2? If you don't like either of those there is no hope for you.

Also OP, if you like racing games, need for speed hot pursuit is a great game. Very much like nfs3 and nfshs but updated cars and modern graphics.

Arma/Arma 2 are also fun if you are into Mil sims.
Just Cause 2 is amazing, if you have a DX10 card and Win7
There is a game called "X3: Terran Conflict" on steam, it's an incredibly complex space sim, you may or may not like it.

From those not already mentioned:

Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed 2.
Starcraft 2.

Also, I haven't bought this game yet, but am planning on: Gemini Rue. You might like it as well.

I've tried playing Stalker like 10 times. I can never play it for more than a few hours before I just get annoyed at it.

I played the hell out of Borderlands and its expansions with a couple friends co-op, one of the best co-op experiences of my gaming life.

Other than that.. StarCraft 2 was an awful lot of fun while it lasted, though I'm bummed that there was no zerg campaign missions.

Other than that.. nothing really that's made me care.

Though the teasers for this make my toes curl in all the right ways: http://metalrage.gamehi.com/

Edit: On a related note, does anyone actually play a recommendable MMO anymore?

I don't personally think that either of those games are worth playing. I personally don't find any single-player or role-playing game to be worth playing. I personally only find games worth playing that allow me to blow the faces of my best friends off with a shotgun (or other such weapon) in skill-based online multi-player (& I'm not talking about watered down bull**** like Call of Duty). The types of games that I personally enjoy are pretty much extinct. This doesn't mean that I don't play any new games but the only ones that interested me recently were Aliens vs. Predators & Shattere Horizon.
? :)

Sounds like you've never bothered to play them and are instantly dismissing them. Your loss.

While typically I agree with Emon on nearly everything, I must agree with Mentat that Shattered Horizon was one of the more compelling shooters I've ever played. Only problem is, I think Mentat and myself were the only ones to play it.

I would personally skin at least twenty kittens if it meant I could find a new co-op FRPG to play. Has a worthwhile one been actually made since Baldur's Gate?

Unfortunately, Planetside Next was delayed. .(

Otherwise I might have been out in time for me to post it in this thread.

I used to feel the same way about wanting to play MP games. But, I finally got tired of the repetitive nature of MP. You get some exciting games, but now I appreciate the good stories of a game like Mass Effect.

What about Dragon Age? I never played it. Did it suck?

I'm fairly sure when I looked at it, there was no MP option. So I didn't care enough to play it.

What does the "F" in "FRPG" stand for?

Also, thanks for all the suggestions thusfar, everyone!

relative to fo3.. tiny & unpolished map, linear & boring storyline, less overall content, new content less interesting...

i suppose if you're a huge fan of single player RPG's, especially bethesda style games you would like NV, but if you found oblivion and fallout 3 boring and minimally entertaining (like me) then you'll absolutely hate NV
