Well, quite a few games do still use Securom or similar systems, and I refuse to buy any game that has that crap in it. Some good examples would be Crysis, Arkham Asylum, some of the Borderlands DLCs.

It's another BioWare RPG. It's like KotOR or Mass Effect but fantasy and with a weaker story. Still quite good, just not as good. The combat was a lot of fun and I found myself glued to my computer until I finished it. Well worth buying.

Dragon Age II, not as much...

Dragon Age: Origins was a throwback to the days of Baldur's Gate, at least the PC version of it. It was a pretty good game. Like Emon said, DAII -- not so much.

Well, if you find these types of games boring, why did you even get New Vegas? I personally found it quite entertaining. It's not an awful game, not by a stretch.

Okay, these games are more than five years old, but you HAVE to play them. KotOR and KotOR 2. Best Star wars games ever. KotOR 2 got dissed a lot, but I enjoyed it even more than the first, because there were more feats and Force powers and such, you started out as a Jedi instead of having to play a chunk if the game first, and you could go beyond level 20. I actually liked the story, complex as it was, though naturally it doesn't hold a candle to the first game's story.

And the third older, must-play game is Jade Empire. Its a Bioware game, but I dont think its appreciated enough; I've never met anyone else who has played it. Martial arts rpg inspired by Oriental mythology, great gameplay, and a story right up there with the first KotOR.

I haven't played Borderlands, but I just was on Steam and saw there's a sale going on, so you can get the GotY edition for $7.50. I think I may buy it since it's that cheap.

Agreed. Jade Empire is insanely underrated. It's probably the only Bioware game I actually liked (most of the good "Bioware" games people think of were actually made by BIS.)

have they made it playable on operating systems higher than XP yet?

I enjoy the Bioware games, but watching my brothers play Dragon Age 2, I just can't get into it.

DA2 is the best, worst, game Bioware has ever made.

I think you meant the "best worst game" Bioware has ever made. I am left wondering, though. Many of the games suggested to you here have been available not only on current consoles but last-gen consoles. Are you that far behind that you need a new PC to play them?

I haven't played either but have watched my brother & father play both. I simply don't find single-player games to be appealing at all. I'm also very much turned off by anything that's classified as "MMO". If it allows more than 8-10 people in a server, I can't tolerate it. I recognize the fact that I may be in the minority with this opinion but I just can't make myself play games that aren't appealing.

Left 4 Dead 1&2, hell anything by Valve... It all costs next to nothing on Steam.

New Vegas' map is bigger than FO3's. It's far more sparse though and those sodding canyons get right on my ****.

Fallout 3 still wins for being more polished and better realised.

Are you also the kind of person that watches trash television and never reads books? Just curious.

Also not sure why you're going on about MMOs. You are not in the minority with that opinions.

Yeah, i've only met one person (in the flesh) that plays MMOs. Definitely not my cup of tea either. These days I tend to enjoy little blasts on iOS games rather than anything I need to invest a lot of time in. (ok, so I've blown 11+ hours on Battleheart, but in little 10 minute blasts <_< )

Nope. I really enjoy reading but I do tend to stick to non-fiction most of the time except for a science fiction or fantasy book (or series) here or there. I suppose that I just find single-player games to be boring. A perfect example would be Portal. Everyone talked & talked about it so I eventually gave in & tried it. I got bored in the 3rd area (level?) & never bothered with it again. I've started & quit Half-Life 2 have a dozen times. It could be a personality flaw of some sort but that doesn't change the fact that games without multi-player don't appeal to me. I've played a ton of single-player games over the years & just can't stand them. I suppose that I really only enjoy gaming as a social activity. If I'm not text/voice chatting with friends while simultaneously blowing their faces off (or the faces of another team), I can't enjoy myself. Even co-op bores me to death because there's too much story.

My friend is that way he doesn't play anything unless it's MP.. I've always thought video games where a way to get away from people and I grew up an only child so single player console games are the norm for me.

I just have to add my support for Jade Empire being one of the best games I've ever played, and I really want a sequel. I bought Mass Effect, and maybe I just need to get off the starting planet, but man I can't get into it like I did KoToR and JE. Oh, I also have to say I didn't think Dragon Age was all that fun or well done. Seems kind of like a cash in, generic RPG to me. I never clocked into the combat to where I didn't feel tedious.

Kirby, you are the awesomeness for liking JE. Of course, given your work on NeS, I already knew that, but then you forfeited all your awesomeness when you stopped writing for it. You have now reclaimed some of your awesomeness.

Speaking of which - COME BACK AND WRITE FOR NES!

Mass Effect is a great game, too, Kirbs - get off the starting planet! However, I do have to say that, while I intensely enjoyed my playthrough of it, I could never get into a replay without getting bored. :(

I'm like your friend I have to admit. I'm definitely a social gamer, and have a really short attention span for SP games.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

The following is the Special Edition of my previous post. In other words, it is a re-release of the post as it was originally meant to appear. Basically, I confused this thread with the one where Tibby was asking about old games to play on his new old laptop.

Gebohq, I am left wondering, though. Many of the games suggested to you here have been available not only on current consoles but last-gen consoles. Has your previous PC been so far behind that you need a new PC to play them?

Team fortress 2, just recently started playing. Great game that doesn't take itself seriously.
Crysis 1 and 2 to really see how far you can push your computer.
Portal 2 and mortal kombat shortly.

I purchased my previous desktop sometime in 2002. It was pretty good at the time, but the most advanced game I could end up running was HL2: Episode 1 (and there were some missing textures for the effects they added). Admittedly, I'm not much of a PC gamer, but I also don't personally own either X-Box or any of the Playstations (I only got a PS2 back last August from Al Ciao) which tend to have the games available on PC.

However, thanks to work, I've been able to dabble in a lot of the games people have mentioned.

i suppose what i said WAS redundant, what i was getting at was that NV forced the player to follow the storyline for a large amount of the early game, when FO3 didn't enforce it past the intro. i also personally found the storyline of NV didn't capture my interest as well as FO3

it's not that i found them boring right away, persay, i had fun with oblivion and fo:3 but i was only able to do 1 playthrough and a few side quests before i was bored with them. i was expecting NV to have more in depth relations and characters, like FO1&2 did (since it was made by those developers) but it instead lacked more than fo3 did in that area

you're right, NV has a bigger map by terms of literal volume, but the density of the map was dismal at best. most of my experience in NV was walking through emptyish terrain, looking for something interesting

How come whenever two or more people agree on anything it's now called a circle jerk?
That label has been thrown around so much it's meaningless now.

Just the way each new post about it in this thread textually fellates the guy who did the last post. I mean for all I know it could be the most awesome game ever, thats not my argument, but I'm inclined to not like it now because of this thread.

Plus I cant recall that term being used all that often.. and never before by me.

You have to have enough people to create a decent circle.

No one calls it a triangle jerk.
