Baby Names
2011-05-22, 4:21 AM #1
My girlfriend and I don't really agree on baby names. We both have normal names, so the only thing our suggestions have in common is that they're all weird. Neither of us wants a "David."

There is one name for a boy that we've come to agree upon, but no one besides us likes it. "Dawkins" as a first name for a boy, and not because of Richard Dawkins either. While we're both fans of The Selfish Gene as well as being pretty staunch atheists, we just like the sound and order of the letters and it isn't intended to be an homage at all. We considered "Hawkins" in order to dodge the issue instead, but part of our affinity for the name comes from the strong consonant sounds. That said, I really like H names so that wouldn't be horrible.

Other Names that I like include: Hiro, Hank, Eloise, Eli, Job, Jude, Sophie, Aegis, and Nelly.

Anyway, what are your preferred baby names, and does your significant other like them?

But Dawkins isn't first-name material. In fact, it sounds horrible for a first name. Such ugliness. DAWK-ins.

DAWKins, HAWKins, NAWKins, FAWKins, whatever.

I think that both "Dawkins" & "Hawkins" are fine names. Children will probably end up calling him "Dawk" (which sounds a bit like "Doc" so maybe there could be some wishful thinking there) or "Hawk" though, which actually both still sound good, so you better be prepared for that. I don't much like any of the other names that you've chosen except for maybe "Jude" & "Sophie" (this one is getting a bit common these days though).

My wife & I just had a baby daughter & it took us quite awhile to settle on a name. We ended up deciding that all of our children that are born in the U.S. will have Native American first names & French middle names & that all of our children born in France will have French first names & Native American middle names. We went with "Dakota Margot" for our first child.
? :)

... I really want a John. Or at least a John or a Malcolm in the middle names somewhere.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Yeah, we both like "Hawk" and "Dawk" so either one fits for us. Do you guys think it's worth avoiding invoking Richard Dawkins whenever people hear our kid's name? Also, I like Sophie but I like the name Selphie even more, but I don't think I could live with myself if I named my kid after a videogame character. Not to mention when I hear the name as the word "self" it makes me hate it. "Selfish Selphie!" sounds like a pretty obvious insult.

Does anyone feel a little silly coming up with names before you meet the kid, though? I can certainly imagine having a baby and then realizing all of the names I wanted just don't fit them.

I personally find it a bit irritating that you're forced to feel like you need to come up with a name before you've had any time to spend with the baby but I think you'll find that any reasonable name that you choose will suit your baby just fine (these feelings are purely psychological but I think it's probably normal for parents to have these fears). Also, you can always change the child's name at a later date if you really feel that you've made a mistake.

I will decide by dart board. And by dart board, I mean a room full of people. I will be blindfolded, and whoever I injure the worst will get the honor of passing their name to my child.

Nelly?...Why would you want your child to be assosciated with some ghetto trash rapper
2011-05-22, 7:37 AM #10
... Nelly was a girls name before Nelly was the name of a "rapper."

That brings up another annoying thing about names. We tend to get a lot of people that think we named our child after Dakota Fanning. Never-mind the fact that it's the name of 2 states, was formerly a U.S. territory & the entire Native American thing before that.

The first 2 people that come to mind when I think of the name "Nelly" are Nelly Furtado & Nellie from "Little House on the Prairie".

It's hard for me to say something about English names... one thing I know is that I don't like Jewish names like Eli or Job, because they just scream "I'm Jewish", like David. Unless you're Jewish, then I guess it's not an issue.

That said, I know a girl called Sam (just Sam, not short for Samantha or anything), and I think it is really hot. :P

In general I like names that can be used for both boys and girls (such as René(e) or Kim)...

Haha, I didn't realize that all of the names I like are Jewish, but no I'm not at all.

We have a Frederick Stefan, but he's normally Freddie. Girl's name was Sophie. We both liked Freya, Sam and Jack but they were too popular with the other babies of the time - we wanted something a little less Dave but not quote Bort.

Not going to happen. Girl babies only happen when the woman is on her knees, facing North. This is why I avoid doggy style at all costs.

Also the blacks did manage to ruin Darren by feminizing it. Daryn. I couldn't believe it either.

i had the name Isabella Maria picked out since i was about 12 years old because i wanted to nick name her izzy, but then twilight came out and every other girl born within the last 4 years is isabella. it makes me sad. if Elliot was a girl his name would have been Hailey.

I don't think I could possibly be subtle about that. I want to make the first whale joke for my baby thread.

You know, my girls and I have had so many conversations about baby names and they always have names resolutely picked out. I've never had any idea what I would want to name my child. Not something completely boring and not something way out there, I know, but I've never heard or thought of a name and said to myself "That. That is what I will name my future child."
