the thing is all the sites doing this "we're going to make the site useless to protest this crap" aren't going to get everyone signing e-petitions or contacting anyone in congress it's just going to annoy them

they just want to quickly check something on wikipedia and they're not going to stop and read the message and put in their zip code their going to just look elsewhere for the info while cursing wikipedia for wasting their time

plus if they REALLY wanted to anger people into action with this they should have got facebook, twitter, and google (with exceptions to gmail, docs, calendar, etc... shut down the search and + for a day) MS and sony should shut down Live and PSN for a day netflix, vudu, hulu... (all the paid services obviously should compensate everyone for the lost day)

so far i've only run into 3 of the "thousands" of sites and only one of them i actually use frequently which happens to be rage3d

People might not read the info on Wikipedia, but at least the action is getting the attention of the media. On NPR, I don't remember hearing anything specific about SOPA or PIPA recently. Now the bills have been a top story for two days.

Erh, a decent amount of sites I frequent have done something. Most notably Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Protests seem to be having some effect - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/technology/web-protests-piracy-bill-and-2-key-senators-change-course.html?_r=1

Two senators backing down on their support, one of them being a co-sponsor of the legislation. Progress!

Well my most frequented site, blog.patcartelli.com, is blacked out, so I'm getting in touch with my congresspeople RIGHT away.

Yeah I just found out about this from a friend today, and I was like, shwa?

There's no way it'll stand even if it passes. There will so much outcry and protest, people will take it to the Supreme Court and it'll be struck down. Putting the burden of proof on the accused is unconstitutional, last I heard.

...not that that matters to Congress, most likely.

Yes this is true, but for how long will it sit before the Supreme Court gets it, then how long till they rule it unconstitutional, then how long till it is acutally stoped. I see this as lets stop the gun from fireing insted of cleaning up the wounds.

They are why bills like SOPA get as far as they do. Congrats to the impatient morons of the world.

You'd think that, and you'd be wrong. Many senators pages linked from there have gone down now due to traffic overload. It's definitely getting attention.

Dunno what that is either.

Wait - "uptoke"? Is this a weed reference?
2012-01-18, 3:40 PM #25
part of the reason it was done is because many people didn't even know about it, or only heard vague things and didn't know that they could have horrible side effects on the way the internet is run.

The site blackouts that is.

Wasn't there a discussion several months ago about some protest on Wall Street that no one was hearing about?

Funny if true. I think this shows beyond a doubt that the media companies don't want effective anti-piracy legislation, they want these broken corporate censorship bills.

Didn't Obama say the other day that even if this passes he'll veto it because it infringes on the First Amendment, and it's not America's place to be the internet police?

I mean, it's not like it's going to pass anyway, but just sayin'.

I just imagine there's a different world where the media organizations recognized a new trend in technology and found a way to make money delivering content the way people want it instead of complaining and pushing legislation because they're not making money reproducing data at low scaling costs. I don't even support piracy so much anymore as I just think it's an indication of a broken market. I don't have any ideas myself, I just know there's got to be a way to make piracy irrelivant instead of evil. And I don't think the solution is necessarily going to be as awful as integrated marketing.

It's funny how hollywood still thinks they have deep pockets. Don't assume Obama came out against it because of free speech or anything; he's courting the tech companies who have all the money now.
