Trayvon Martin Superthread
2012-04-03, 10:58 PM #1
Oh come on, you guys know you're dying to talk about this ****. (For those who aren't dying to talk about this **** because you live under a Finland, details are here.)

I'll start:
1) The stand-your-ground law is irrelevant, and I'm not big on gun ownership but I'll still fight you if you disagree.
2) Martin would not have died if he weren't black.
3) Zimmerman will eventually be arrested, tried, and convicted of at least reckless manslaughter.

Facts are as follows:

Kid was not bothering anyone.
Zimmerman called police.
Police told Zimmerman not to follow kid.
Zimmerman followed kid.
Kid is dead.

If this ******* didn't think he was Batman, none of this would have ever happened.

I think that you both summed up my feelings on the subject. I'm actually wearing a hoodie as I type this--you know, for solidarity.
? :)
2012-04-03, 11:50 PM #4
Whenever I see one of those "Neighborhood Watch" signs, I can't help but imagine an old white lady holding a household item as a weapon, asking me if I've seen any *******.

Can't help but think that so much of "law enforcement" is just straight up racialism, merely founded on the statistical fact that blacks are more likely to commit crimes.
2012-04-03, 11:50 PM #5
Why is it automatically a racist thing? Does every black man shot by a white man have to be race related?
2012-04-03, 11:56 PM #6
Thanks for raising that point, CM. I actually only assumed that aspect of the case, and I see that some media outlets have as well.

Regardless, I think that many whites have an instinctive fear of blacks, especially wearing hoodies. Also, many black congressmen have been wearing hoodies to the floor in solidarity.
2012-04-04, 12:00 AM #7
I also think that many blacks (especially in the media) tend to call any such situation as racial.

I was just reading about Al Sharpton this very moment.
2012-04-04, 1:05 AM #9
but Michael MacFarlane always said he hated these threads
2012-04-04, 4:45 AM #10
My first instinct when I heard about this was pretty much exactly what Michael MacFarlane said, but the more I read, the more I'm not so sure. I think way too much judgement is being wasted on too much rumor and unverified information. You can read one set of "facts" and it's clear that zimmerman was a racist and followed the kid when he shouldn't have, confronted him, got in over his head, and shot him. But read another set of "facts" and it's clear that he was not a racist, followed until he was told not to, and then was confronted and attacked.

Basically there is way too much media manipulation (like the soundclip where he says he's "suspicious, and looks black" when he actually was just responding to a question about his description) in both directions and incomplete information for me to think it's worthwhile to make any judgement until details of the investigations are made public.

Unfortunately nobody wants an investigation and a trial. Those protesting crowds don't want Zimmerman to face a jury of his peers; they want him to face a noose.
2012-04-04, 5:09 AM #12
But he was black! He had it coming! ******s be crazy
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE
2012-04-04, 9:25 AM #13
I don't know if racism was involved or not. I do know that a guy overstepping his bounds as a citizen led to a kid who wasn't bothering anyone being killed. I don't give a rat's ass what color either of them are. The guy is an ******* because he ran down a kid who wasn't doing anything wrong. I'm surprised that no one has pointed out yet that (if Martin really did attack Zimmerman), had he killed Zimmerman, it would have fallen under the SYG law.

EDIT: Oh, and while I don't think the core issue of this should have anything to do with the race of either of them, we might as well face the facts that it does. There's no way around it because of the rampant unchecked racism still present in American society and the media.

The thing is, other than the phone calls, we have absolutely no idea what happened. Zimmerman states that he chased the guy but lost him, only for the guy to later find him and start wailing on him.

And now there's a bunch of witness statements that contradict each other, as people who never saw what happened are trying to either send him to jail or keep him out.
2012-04-04, 9:58 AM #15
I like how they had his dad on the news explaining what "really happened". I'm glad the "but my dad is on my side" defense works now.

I sure hope Zimmerman's story is true, because he deserved to have the **** kicked out of him if he's following kids around with a gun in his belt. All of the arguments in his favor seem to discount the fact that he's following people around with a chip on his shoulder and a gun. Also, while it plays into the media manipulation you guys were talking about, the sound clip where he seems to say "damn coons" kind of removes reasonable suspicion for me. He might have been saying a billion other words, but combined with just his attitude about suspicious people wearing hoodies, I can't help but assume those words were the racist ones.

That said, good lord his family is a bunch of attention whores. That doesn't change much, though and I still think it was a racially charged attack, and I do hope he got his ass kicked before killing a kid, because I'd hate to think a dude would just shoot someone for looking suspicious.

The "****ing coons" thing is most interesting thing to me in this case I think. While it's possible that Zimmerman could have said any number of things there, his pal Joe Oliver claims he actually said "goons" in an endearing sort of way. Because that makes sense, this dude is stalking a kid because he thinks he is a burglar or something and decides to randomly throw out a term of endearment, yeeeah.

Dude totally called Trayvon a coon.

I suppose the only thing race really brings into it is deciding whether he should be prosecuted for a hate crime, or murder. Being that his father is a judge, I figure they'll manage to get that knocked down to manslaughter.

Lol, I thought the U.S. census already "created" white Hispanics.

Because I think there are really several separate discussions going on about Martin. There's the actual facts of the case, there's the media reaction to it, there's the reaction to the media reaction, there's the discussion of what this incident (and the reaction to it) tells us about race in America today, there's the gun laws debate, etc.

Also because I posted it and all of my threads are super okay work with me here.

I do not know what happened because I didn't see it and I find it amusing how people on both sides are acting like they do.

I do know however that all the things you state here (quoted below) can be true and this could (COULD!) still be a justifiable homicide.

I'm not expecting enough evidence to turn up to convict this guy of anything.

What country do you live in? If you answered America, the answer is a resounding "yes," simply because my granddad has a car that was property when black people were too.

Could you rephrase that in the form of a sentence spoken by a sane person?
2012-04-04, 8:12 PM #29
To wit: America is still incredibly not racist (see: racist) because we just got over that whole racism thing 50 years ago and it's not a big deal anymore.

edit: I mean I'm not racist I voted for Obama

idk, tbh Zimmerman confessed so I'm kinda taking his word on that one. Maybe he's covering for someone else?

I mean that wasn't really a criticism. You did give us basically the only facts we're sure of. Which is like not much.

You find it amusing? I find it appalling.

Apparently this country isn't interested in justice anymore. We just set up chain emails to nail people to the wall, even though we have no facts.

The strongest broad-based sentiments I've seen re: Zimmerman, outside the conservative-beloved New Black Panther Party, were about arresting and/or charging him. No one worth mentioning really wants to put nails through his extremeties.
