I was honestly really skeptical about this level pack because I was nervous we'd get all excited about it and then 2 levels would get released by people who were already making JK levels anyway. The financial incentive really adds to the chances that this won't be a sad flop that reminds us the game really is dead. (even if I imagine the winners will just donate) This will be a well spent 10 dollars.

Edit: Sent. Now I have a few months to get JK working on my computer so I can judge these things! Might just be easier to get one of my old boxes up and running.

Yeah.. I had to consult the tutorials to find out how to make a door and give the player force powers. Brutal stuff. Might even throw in an elevator one of these days!

Haha. It's all coming back to me now. I forgot how much I hate texturing! - I also hate the fact that I put detail in areas the player probably won't even see. Bad habits.

I'm going to try and have people create little secret areas (so there's replay value to find them all!) including old editors from last century. Time to pester Mr Piggott.

For some reason when I read this post I imagined you sitting at a desk with light filtered through window blinds on your face, cigarette burning in an ashtray, then relaxing back into the shadows.

What are the restrictions for using custom soundtracks and that sort of thing? If it falls under fair use (modified, parody, non-profit, etc.), is it fair game?

If you don't bring it up, it is. However if CM is put in a position where you're actively asking to use stuff, he'll obviously say no because he could be held accountable. So don't mention it. Shh.

Just get some Creative Commons music. Do not use anything you don't have a license to use. It's not allowed, and it does not fall under fair use/parody protections.

Don't ever do this. I oughta just start banning people who say this stuff, just on principle. Second off, I will be reviewing each of these levels, so there's no way you could get away with it. Don't do it.

So just to clarify, any Star Wars music is pretty much out of the question, unless its coming from the jk CD (which means no music for steam users)?

I will allow you to use ripped music from the JK CD if you want it to work for Steam users (since arguably they would have access to that music regardless). Otherwise, no. And you may not port stuff from MotS to JK either.

At the risk of being annoying, I just want to make sure I don't do anything that disqualifies me, and at the same time define the boundaries of creativity with and copyright infringement. What about using midi versions of music? As I understand it, midi music is, in most cases, different enough from the original recording that it falls outside of the copyright restrictions. Would this be acceptable?

JK can't play MIDI files, which means you'd have to export them out as a WAV. Also, the quality would be pretty terrible. I'm not sure on the legalities of this, but honestly, I would rather be safe. Don't do it unless it's either Creative Commons (or other compatible license), or from the JK CD. Period.
2012-04-23, 12:19 PM #60
OK thanks for clarifying. I have been listening to some orchestral creative Commons music and have found a few pieces that will work, especially when tied in with music from Jk to create those suitably star wars moments.

I don't believe a MIDI reproduction would fall outside of copyright infringement. It would be classified as a derivative work (derived from the original composition) and the original owner would still have claim to it. It would be similar to a cover song, for which consent needs to be obtained. It would only be protected if it could be classified as a parody, I believe.

Using a midi arrangement of something without permission is 100% copyright infringement and will hypothetically get you in trouble.

JK only. Wouldn't be much of a JK anniversary pack if it wasn't for JK.

MotS has more capability but I think the unofficial patch has evened that up quite a bit. Unless you are just dying to have colored lighting support.
