has anyone here dealt with genuine depression?

Have depression, and have been treated for it. Switched medications several times, after... well... it didn't respond well to medication. Medication isn't always a good idea.
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

Medication is not the solution no. Certainly not over the long run / permanently. However, getting diagnosed and seeing a psychiatrist will at least contribute towards a better mindset.

But let's face it: its a combination of factors. If you stuff yourself with pill or whine to a psychiatrist, its likely that once you're done with either, you'll quickly find yourself in the same situation. If your current lifestyle has lead you into depression, making no changes (eg. taking weeks off work, and then coming back to the exact same stress level) will solve nothing. At best, you'll find a temporary solace.

No one here is really qualified to help some depressed. Only a professional can.

You can beat it, pal.

I'd like to point out that there are literally dozens of medications and even more possible combinations of medications and it may take some time to find something that works for you. It varies from person to person. It may take time and patience to find something that works.
