But the thing is, there's a giant crate hanging over the soldier's head, and a panel in front of you that looks a lot like the controls for the crane holding it up. Why can't we drop it on the soldier

Just beat it. Got annoyingly difficult towards the end, but I just kicked it down to easy when I felt it got unfair. Also that ending is such a cocktease, i was hoping for at least a shot of what Xen looks like.

It's not really spoiler worthy, it just ends at Lambda Core when you enter the portal. They're releasing Xen later.
