Vintage computer parts.

Yo guys, I figure at least one of you might have something I want, so I'm gonna dump my current retro computing wishlist in here and see what happens, I'm willing to pay a small amount for cool stuff. If you're wondering ~why~ I want this stuff, it's because I have an obsession with 90s era computing.

Looking for:
Voodoo 2+, preferably PCI
Soundblaster AWE64 gold
Other ISA or PCI audio cards from the era.
Pentium III processors, PIII compat motherboards (Needs to have an ISA slot or I don't want it)
Geforce 1 or 2 TI

I probably forgot something, so if you have any neat old tech you think I might be interested in post it here, maybe I want it, maybe somebody else does.
2012-11-27, 9:54 PM #2
I will kill every single person on this earth for an AWE64 gold.

You should really be wanting an Aureal Vortex 2, then you can experience JK sound as it was meant to be

That would be cool too, but I prefer Creative stuff because it's compatible with everything.
Does JK really support A3D? I knew XWA did but thought JK was too early for it.
2012-11-27, 11:00 PM #5
No, they just put the option in the menu for fun

I don't even know of any A3D option, never poked around in the audio settings.
E: I don't even see an option, it must only be enabled if an A3D capable card is detected.

Wow, I've thrown out everything that old. Anyway even if I found an old Geforce AGP card in my collection, shipping would cost me as much as it would for you to purchase it off ebay.

i happen to have a 12MB voodoo 2... i even have the box sitting in my garage

but the card is in a computer buried at the bottom of a closet so i'm too lazy to dig it out
eat right, exercise, die anyway
2012-11-28, 10:14 AM #9
I literally gave away my Voodoo 3 AGP like 7 years ago.
2012-11-28, 10:18 AM #10
Yeah I have a voodoo 2 kicking around somewhere too, not sure it'd be worth my time to get it shipped to Canada though. Sorry bud.
"Honey, you got real ugly."
2012-11-28, 4:17 PM #11
I have a Voodoo 3 AGP, but it's garbage trash compared to a Geforce 2 (There's a GF2 MX in it right now), I would prefer a PCI Voodoo so I can get the best of both worlds.
OFC if somebody has like, a voodoo 6 engineering sample I'll kill you for it.
Ey Dark, confirm it works and I'll give you :20bux: for it.
2012-11-28, 4:34 PM #12
Of course a GF2 is better than a Voodoo 3, they're different generations of cards. But you're not looking for performance, you're looking for compatibility. Voodoo 3 does pretty damn well at anything around the Quake 2 period or older, AND supports Glide, which a lot of games used back then.
2012-11-28, 4:56 PM #13
Ye, but I also have a Voodoo 1, so I've got that for running pure glide on things from when glide mattered. A Voodoo 2 or 3 pci would be nice just cause it would be faster.
For that matter, does anybody know what the advantages of using an SB Live over the AWE64 would be? I know it's a more advanced card, which midi sets stored on system ram instead of onboard, but what about dos compatibility?
2012-11-28, 5:05 PM #14
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP will do just fine even for Quake 3 and UT. It did better than my Riva TNT2 Ultra

Again, I know, but it's noisy as hell, so I just do a GF2 MX400 + Voodoo 1 for now.
2012-11-28, 5:27 PM #16
You can pretty easily just stick a big heatsink on it

2012-11-28, 5:31 PM #17
Probably, but it's my stupid retro gaming machine and I'll run it however I please. :colbert:
(Plus there's only like, 5cm between the agp slot and the processor)
Hey an MT32 would also be hecka cool.
2012-11-28, 10:49 PM #18
Uhhh the heatsink faces the OTHER way

hahaha

dammit tibby
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

There's even LESS space in that direction!
Besides I just prefer it the way it is, so there.

This thread does not deliver.

Less space? What? It's just PCI slots! If you have a motherboard with 4+ PCI slots you have a ton of space, even if you are using some of them

Try all of them.
Voodoo, Modem, Ethernet, TV-Tuner.
Why are you so adamant that I switch video cards.
2012-11-29, 12:30 PM #24
Why the hell do you need a 56k modem and TV Tuner? You don't have dialup and if Canada is anything like the USA, the TV tuner won't be able to get any (aka, all) of the digital broadcast channels.
2012-11-29, 12:44 PM #25
But can it run TODOA?

This is one of the most masochistic things I've ever seen.

Because sometimes I browse old BBSes, it's like internet archeology. I dunno it works fine for me.
Yes it can.
Yeah but I get some enjoyment out of it.

Please continue to be bizzarely angered by the old computer I have, and like to use.
2012-11-29, 2:23 PM #28
Replace anger with facepalm, and that's what me, along with everyone else, is doing.
2012-11-29, 2:37 PM #29
Remember when Tibby *****ed about having a bad computer?
I had a blog. It sucked.

Not me!

Tibby, I hope your new old computer brings you enjoyment. However, I would caution against wasting too much time on videogames/computers and suggest you partake in more social activities. Good day.

Maybe Tibby will get lucky, since now that Tracer has posted the next person might be .. an actual Trader. EH? EH?

But why? What does it matter what I do with these old spare parts I've collected if it brings me some small enjoyment? I think you're just grasping at threads (heh) in some vain attempt to insult me.
2012-11-29, 3:03 PM #33
yeah CM come on man man come on
2012-11-29, 4:05 PM #34
I, too, collect and restore older systems. I have several PS/2 mod 30s, with one fully restored, another being a work in progress, and the rest haven't been touched yet (and are in rather sorry condition). Another system that I've been working on is a PS/2 model 60 server, with what I believe to be a bad RAM module. I also have one working Apple IIc, with several more that need work, including a Laser 128. There's also several Apple IIe systems that need to be looked over, an Apple ImageWriter II dot-matrix printer, an Okidata dot matrix, several ****ty old printers, and a couple of systems from the range of 1990-2003. Part of it is from collecting, the other is from the family hoarding gene.

My favorite system, though, is my first laptop, which was a Toshiba Satellite Pro running a Pentium I with 64MB RAM on Windows 95.

But, yes, probably have some of those parts somewhere. Though, not to sound like a dick, but I don't think you're really the best person to give those to...
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

Up until this line I was all set for another "Massassians Helping Massassians" moment.

Somebody edit his post and put a 1000 x 1000px :smug: there.

I'm pretty insulted that you think a Pentium 3 and GeForce 2 is vintage hardware. That's a better computer than most of us had when we were in high school.
2012-11-29, 4:48 PM #39
Yeah, but it's all relative. For me personally a P3 is nostalgic, to you I guess an Apple II or something would be more apt. To each their own.
Being insulted by my choice of nostalgic hardware is probably a bit extreme tbh.
