Runescape, what's so great about it?
2004-01-01, 4:54 PM #1
One of my friend seem to absolutely adore this game, but somehow I don't see what's so great about this game. For starters, a limited create a player. You're stuck with some dumb Charlie Brown look alike only he's tall and he can have hair. No music and no sound. Combat is very repetitive with no skills to learn. So can you tell me what makes this game so great (there are actually alot of people playing it)? The map is very limited, you can't zoom in or out.

I mean yeah it's free, but there are better free MMORPG games.

I asked my friend what makes Runescape so great and he gave some pretty weak arguements. He said you only have to worry about yourself, and you can make money. My response was, "can't you do that with all MMORPGs". He didn't answer.

I'm sorry my blind friend. You have not played RuneScape II.

I pity you. I really do. Apparently you do not have the time to pay a mere 5$ a month for an amazing game. It may be in it's beta stages (I think) But it will come.

What other game can you cook your own food, mine your own ore, melt that ore, smash it up to make items, have huge parties on holidays to get unique once in a lifetime items, mix up potions out of herbs, explore a wilderness so large, not even some of the most amazing players have reached the end. I could go on and on. But I'll leave that up to you [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

EDIT: The member's version of RS1 has sound, RS2 has sound and amazingly done MIDI music. Get the XG Yamaha Synth, it makes it sound all the better

Indeed runescape sucks, but it's just so simple. I'm at level 26 and have full mith... somehow it just sucks people in.

I cook sub-par food (pies) and sell them to noobs because: "OMG SOMETHING BETTER THEN MEAT!" and give me 100gp a peice...

Also, RS2, different meats do different things :P and in members has the opposite end of the wilderness, THE DESERT (bum bum bum)

my brother plays, he got a one year membership for it for his birthday... he's on level 50-something.

It's not very immersive, not graphically impressive, but a new update is coming out that is much better looking....

It's just fun.

I'll get pics of RS2 sometime tomorow, The character generation is MUCH better. and the talking to NPCs is much more unique. Like I said I could go on and on because everything changed, and some stuff was even added in. Multiple attacks, back attacks, smashingthemonthebackastheyrunawayasiftosayOMQDONTRUNYOUDUMBPOOHEAD

Slightly off topic: It's always fun to bash people to death in CoD with the kar98 when they're clueless. That'd be a cool feature for runescape...

I played Runescape once. My entire experience was opening the game, seeing the characters and saying to myself "this is stupid..." and then closing the game.

I know some people that are totally addicted to Runescape. For a free MMORPG it looks okay, good for a bit of time-wasting when you're supposed to be doing something important. I didn't get into it because it plays through your browser like a flash game or something. You can't really expect much from free MMORPGs though. Runescape is totally not worth paying anything for.

Fishstickz and I have tried downloading it... don't know how far Fishy's gotten, but I downloaded it once and like 70% through the installation it said "please insert disk 0 where data3.cab is located" ... and in the setup zip I downloaded there was only a data1 and data2.cab :|

So I downloaded again, from a different source I found on the forums there... and that zip was like totally corrupted [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

For Glyde Bane,

Dransik can do that and 10x more. Can you mine ore, fish, cook food, create recipies, farm, harvest, fight, create weapons, magic, armour, mill grain, etc?

Thought so. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Runescape sucks. I was once addicted to it,
But eventually it got boring, very boring,
after the 60th level I decided "This game...IS way to **** repetitive" If they added something to make it funner it probably be very good... I might have to check out Dransik...

Actually you can, but farming is replaced by runecrafting, and there is theiving and more. Plus, some of those you listed are the same thing. Harvesting and Milling are near the same. Oh and if by harvesting you mean getting vegies out of the ground, you can do that too [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] But that's not a skill of course. THere is woodcutting, firemaking, fletching (bow and arrow making) and a bunch of weapon profs.. Trust me, you don't know RS2 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

This game is free and is pretty fun. Unfortunately the servers are almost always full and most of the game is in Korean. Still it has good music (mp3 format) and an actual story.
Oh and I'm talking about Runescape 1 free version. Not the second or paid version.
2004-01-02, 3:08 PM #32
Ah then don't complain about an old game made by very little people with practicly no money. Trust me, if you're going to bash a game and you didn't even play it to it's fullest, then don't bother. All of the skills except runecrafting, theiving, and potion making I listed are in free. Oh and runescape has a story, multiple stories infact. MMORPGs don't really have 'stories' because they would progress as everyone moves on, that would mean the game could be over by the time you sign up. Like in diablo, but at least that is fixed so if it's completed and you aren't in the party, you can do it in another game. however, free MMORPGs tend to not have a true 'story' because of the amount of heros involved. You'd might as well sit in one spot and wait for the "YOU WIN" to pop up. Unless it's done in the more civilised way, it's worthless. Plus the little fact that you're game is korean dosen't help much [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

[edit}}} I will play this game, as so my opinion is not biased, and come back with an update {{{edit]

Dude, you're just cussing up Fileplanet.. The speed of the download server has nothing to do with the Fairy Land server because it's not hosted by them (unless you were downloading it as split up into lots of files? I didn't look at that option). Although I had to queue for about 45 minutes, I got about 40k/s when it was downloading. That isn't too bad for me.
Also 552MB at 1kB/s would take 565 248 seconds, which'd be 6 days, 13 hours, and 48 seconds.

Also I think we should start considering Runescape and Runescape 2 as two entirely separate games not related at all; you have to pay for Runescape 2, do you not? Whether that's as a monthly fee or a one-off, you're still providing income and that would of course mean that it could be way better. The point being made was that of the free version of Runescape, and that it was okay although there are other free MMORPGs that are better. Free MMORPGs and monthly-fee MMORPGs are incomparable.

For the last few months, I've been recuperating from a crippling Everquest addiction. It started out as pretty fun, exploring and everything. At around level 25 it was totally the most fun because if you were with a good group you could take on huge mobs, and it really wasn't much fun at all playing alone. But as I levelled up, grouping up wasn't as necessary (unless you were in a huge raid) and finding groups at around level 40 was really hard. I played Enchanter, a class that really can't solo at all so I found myself taking on easy mobs for days on end just to level up. So anyway, EQ is fun at first but as you get higher the inequalities and general flaws become more and more annoying and the only reason you continue playing is to get to a higher level, not because the actual process is any fun. :-(
If this is to turn into a thread about MMORPGs in general, I'd like to add that World of Warcraft is looking great!

Sadly for you, I have tried ALL download mirrors, so your opinion on that is biased. Also, as I've stated before, RS2 will be FREE in about feburary. It's still being beta-tested. Only paying members can beta-test. Also, the graphics will be better. Like I've said it's still being tested. The paying members will get the usual larger world and skills, but that's beside the point. It's all personal preferance. personally, I don't like MMORPGs that have amazing graphics. So much lag. I also like games that you can read. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

These are the improved graphics for Runescape 2? My Sega Saturn can produce even better graphics.

Glyde Bane, you're probably right that Runescape is "good". If you look at its competition (the other free American made MMORPGs), it obviously wins by far. Although it has a story? It had no prologue upon me starting the game. However compared to Korean RPGs, they're nothing. It's too bad not more of them are translated...

Korea is the global centre for MMORPGs. :-) Korean MMORPGs will always be better than western MMORPGs because Asian culture in general is a lot more social and centred more on the community. That means that Korean players will work together a whole lot better, and rely on group-work. Western culture promotes individualism, so western MMORPGs will have to concentrate more on individual achievements and success, not collective achievements like in Korean MMORPGs. But individualism makes the whole 'massively multiplayer online' thing a bit pointless and players might as well be playing offline. So! If you like MMORPGs, learn Korean!

Korean games do not count. I would rather not play some kind of anime wannabe game. Your opinion is still biased. Play the real game before you argue. Do not suggest any more of that korean crap, because apparently, it's not as popular as things people can read.

And no, a sega saturn cannot produce those graphics. Espescially when it's a game with a whole world to explore. You have no idea, play RS to it's fullest. You WILL be impressed. Trust me, it's not just a game, it's also a thing for sociallising with others. Lots and lots of others.

[EDIT: Just remember that there are very little people working on RS. I'd like to see you and a few others make a game as large as this.]

Korean people seem to have no problem reading Korean, funnily enough. But they can't necessarily read English. The pioneering game Lineage often has 150,000 concurrent Korean users. (150000 in a country of population 48 280 000 is 0.31% whereas the MMO phenomenon Everquest recently celebrated 500 000 users, and taking the population of the US, 290 342 554, that's 0.17% although that's probably much lower because the possible audience is the US and Europe as well)

More than five million Koreans play StarCraft, and it's become a national sport (it's on TV and all!)
In 1999, the number of Internet users in Korea grew by 2607%!
Don't ever underestimate Korea for online gaming. A lot of western game designers are now opening their games to Korea (though I don't think it'll work).
