This is a sentence fragment which I honestly can't parse. Can you fix it before we go on?

Oh, I see. It's a response to my post.

And yes, I absolutely perceive it as chiding. You wrongly accused him of arguing for a "degenerate society", when he did nothing of the sort.

That's fair. I didn't think of him as actually believing that society was preferred, what I meant to say was something more like "that amoral attitude and indifference to it lead to a degenerate society", but expressed poorly.

Like, Bill Gates donates to Democrat PACs, but I don't perceive his donation as completely self-serving rent seeking. The fact that Elon donates to both Republicans and Democrats means he doesn't believe in any of it, and I'm opposed to an instant flippancy as though rent seeking is normal behavior and not hallmark antisocial behavior.

It's even worse than chiding. It's a (bafflingly) deliberate out-of-context rant based on your own interpretation of a phrase he used, in order to make a point against an obvious straw man (and then you chided him for it when you accused him of advocating for a "degenerate society"). But that's not even the worst part. And of the two worse things you've done in this thread, I don't know which is worst of all, between a startling lack of reading comprehension, or an embarrassing degree of obliviousness to your own mistakes.

In other words: I think these are interesting topics you are bringing up, but you couldn't have been more mistaken if you thought that misinterpreting somebody's words in order to introduce them to the discussion would be well received. And it's that lack of social awareness that I think Eversor finds so off-putting.
2018-07-16, 8:18 PM #208
Sorry if I was harsh, lol. But I do think you owe Eversor an apology.

Yes. It's taken... what, 30, 40 posts of concerted effort to get to this point? All because Reid jumped into a conversation spewing thoughtless accusations and uncareful language. It does betray a real lack of social awareness.

And the thing we were actually talking about is waaaaaay behind us now.

I don't concern myself with what Eversor finds off-putting.

I think you should. I think in life we should try to be extra fair to people whose opinions we don't respect. I think you were rude to him because you disagree with his opinions.

Alternatively, you could also jettison any effort to improve your social skills, and instead opt to snuggle up to some like-minded corner of the web. But you may find that increasingly, that place probably won't be Massassi, at this rate.

I think the saddest thing is that he doesn't even realize how bad he's making himself look here.

I'll put in an effort.

I think that's great, really. But since you are in the red here, so to speak, if you want to be taken seriously you might want to start by offering him an apology.
2018-07-16, 8:49 PM #217
(Not that I think you did anything that awful. It's more the doubling down that's really raising eyebrows here. Anyway, if you guys want we can move on.)

Eversor, apologies for being an ******* towards you.

Thanks, I appreciate the apology. I do hope that you'll be a little more self-aware and try to refrain from being so disrespectful in the future. I know we keep going back and forth telling each other what to do, and I know you don't particularly like it (who would?). But it is worthwhile for its own sake to reduce tensions between us. Something that I try to do when I'm inclined to attack you is to not say anything at all. Fighting like this is pretty strenuous and leads to more fighting down the road, I think. So it might be better to just not say anything at all than to have a big blow up, or to engage in a way that is a little more charitable.

Responding to a person’s apology with a lecture explaining why apologizing was necessary is not productive.

I agree and was going to post this as well, but decided it would probably only serve to extend the argument and opted to go with a sardonic response instead.

Well, I hope it will be productive. When I wrote the post accepting the apology, I meant what I said in good faith and I tried earnestly to be diplomatic, although I may have failed on that count. I'll admit I found it difficult to strike the right tone.

Here's the thing: I'm more interested in reaching an understanding and reducing tensions and preventing more of these scorched earth fights than receiving an apology, although I do appreciate it. Frankly, I'm getting pretty tired of this constant bickering. That post was a Hail Mary pass.

In my observation, there are limits to human understanding of one another, and that many times, the best way to get along with people is simply to discover the right amount of distance to between each other. I think it leads to much less resentment and is much easier.

My favourite Tesla is the one that convinced our governments to offer tax incentives for their luxury cars on the basis that conspicuous consumption can avert catastrophic climate change as long as its conspicuous enough.

Am I doing this right?

I think it's important to keep in mind that Elon Musk is a role model for the potential entrepreneur of the future, inspiring students across the globe to study engineering and build large companies that save the planet.

OK, that doesn't sound quite as stupid as I hoped, but it still doesn't make complete sense.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that Elon Musk wants to colonize Mars to escape the inevitable destructive social and environmental changes caused by the wasteful and slothful consumption of his social circle, and the only people who will be allowed to follow him are other billionaires and a handful of slaves wearing execution collars.
2018-07-17, 8:32 PM #232
colonizing mars is certainly a laudable goal, but a surely the pinnacle of human achievement will be reaching new zealand
