/me weeps quietly in memory of the big-*** box of Lego once possessed... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

You're right - Lego used to pwn, then they started getting into all this other lark - and Legoland Windsor in England is great, but a lot of the original stuff there was based on your more normal Lego, which will always rule.

I miss the Pirate sets, they really ruined that line. Plastic sails, specialty pieces, half-baked ships. It was ridiculous..

Compare this: http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6285 (Black Seas Barracuda)

To the last Pirate ship they made: http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6289 Red Beard Runner

The Runner isn't all that bad, but compared to the Barracuda, it's ridiculous. They really dropped the ball, it's supposed to be around the same size and price, but it doesn't look as structual as the Barracuda.

Thing I miss most though, their Launch Command stuff. Sure they had Spaceport and Missions to Mars lines, but it wasn't nearly the same. Spaceport also had quite a few specialty pieces getting in the way. Such as the whole thruster assembly being one piece so it could lightup and whatnot.

http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/catalogs/1996/c96eu/c96eu-07.html

Launch Command liftoff port was the greatest set. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] You'd lay the boosters and gas tank down on the runway, hoist it up to set it on a sled piece. Then you'd roll the shuttle in, hoist that up on the crawler, roll it forward then push the booster assembly into it to join it.

Then you'd roll the crawler back and blast-off. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] And it really did all this, with the help of a crane and support rods running over the tower. I really miss sets with interactivity like that.

Every once in a while I get nostalgic and pull out my Lego box. The most recent thing I made was a working model of the floating-arm-trebuchet that we built for Physics I.

Am I the only one that remembers the original space people? Those were some cool sets!
2004-01-10, 9:02 AM #45
*sigh* I remember having all those great lego sets. space command lift-off site, and older space shuttle that got towed around by a semi-truck, the aquanauts, exploriens (that huge flag ship rocked!), space police, the real police, the fire fighters, it was all great! I wish i didn't have to give everything away when i moved in October [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] now all my beautiful ships and buildings are just a pile of wreckage on my brother's floor. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]
And Glyde Bane I remember the micro machines too! they're awesome (Those i got to keep when i moved [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]), did you ever collect those action fleet ships that micro machines made for a little while?

I have tons of legos in a big plastic bin. Good times. Maybe they'll have the good old legos again and not any of that special piece crap.

I had a few of those, but all mine were the yellow people. I didn't like them so much [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
maybe because they were so stinking old...

I had a couple of those guys as well, but they just couldn't compare to the Futron Sets that replaced them.

Harry Potter lego is the pits. Overpriced and unimaginative. Starwars lego is a bit better.

Only good current lego product are the lego bionicles we get for our son, good value and design.

Say what you will, but the Special Edition line of Star Wars Legos absolutely ruled. The ISD, Blockade Runner, etc. Wow, I'm sad that we won't be seeing a continuation of that line.

Long live Blacktron! Blacktron was my first love -- Legowise, mind you. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I had - well, still have - that giant Exploriens starship. Man, I still love that thing. I remember making Lego animations with our camcorder, hitting "record" and "stop" as quickly as I could to get as smooth an animation as possible. Great fun.

On the contrary, I live for specialized pieaces, weird shapes, stuff like that. it allows me to customize the things I make even MORE.

You're right, those were the only exceptions. I was referring to the smaller Star Wars sets that were a part of the regular line of LEGOs.

Oh, and am I the only one that didn't play teh Blacktrons as 'baddies'? In my giant war, it was Futuron, M-Tron, Blacktron, Space Police, and Ice Planet vs Spyrius, Exploriens (kind of swindled into a treaty they couldn't get out of), Unitorn, U.F.O., and Insectoids (which later evolved into the Karlot Verpine of BWFS, since they were the original leaders of this lego 'coalition').

(can't believe i nearly missed this thread)

pirates ruled, had a pretty big collection...man whoever put that lego lndex together needs a cookie.....a really big cookie....

heres what I had/have (all boxed up now [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] )

Pirates (who i had as the british)

Forbidden Island
Renegade Runner
Skull's Eye Schooner (best pirate ship EVER!
Shipwreck Island
Rock Island Refuge

Imperial Guards (who I always called the spanish....) kinda reliving Brits vs...well the world....

Imperial Trading Post paid for this with all my own money...at the age of 11 (i think) it was a big deal.
Lagoon Lock-up
Imperial Flagship
Imperial Outpost

Soldiers (again fitted in with the above group)

Eldorado Fortress one of the first things i got.
Caribbean Clipper
Sabre Island
Harbor Sentry

and the islanders....who just randomly attacked people....normally the spanish... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Islander Catamaran
Forbidden Cove
Enchanted Island
King Kahuka's Throne
Crocodile Cage

not to mention my brother and I also had a huge city consisting of port, police, fire station, airport, space ship carrier (always wanted the launcher), petrol station, race start thingy...etc...etc...

my dad never had a loft when I was young, it was full of lego and a hornby (sp?) train set running through the lego [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] ....those were the days....

hopefully if lego go back to what they are good at, they should start turning a profit again, although i did always want to get some of the star wars stuff...

Oh yeah, I loved the pirate series! My brother and I shared the sets and had a lot of fun, especially because our floor is blue and we pretended it was the ocean. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I don't remember exactly which kits I had because we switched around the pieces all the time, and I would stare at the catalogues for hours imagining what it would be like to have them--then building them out of spare pieces because I couldn't afford to buy them at my young elementary-school age.

I'll have to dig them out now that I've read this thread. And BIG kudos to James Bond for all those links! Thanks man!

[edit]Oh, and did anyone read the Pirate Comic that they made? It came with one of my kits. Boy, what a story--and it used a lot of elements from the kits they sold.
