Ugh. I don't like that one. The original was so much better.

Anything Nirvana covered was better than the originals, except for their Beatles covers. In addition to the aforementioned Unplugged songs, they also made better versions of Here She Comes Now (Velvet Underground), Turnaround (Devo), Love Buzz (can't remember the original band), Where Did You Sleep Last Night (old folk song), Son of a Gun (The Vaselines), Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam (The Vaselines), and Molly's Lips (The Vaselines)

The Cure did decent covers of Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division) and Young Americans (David Bowie)

David Bowie- Cactus (Pixies cover)

Micheal Stipe, Peter Buck, Adam Clayton, and U2's drummer (I keep forgetting his name) did an amazing version of U2's song One. Way better than the original.

Toad the Wet Sprocket- Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Toad the Wet Sprocket- Hey Bulldog (The Beatles)

Good one that comes to mind is Jars of Clay - Lonely People on the new album.

As I said in the "worst covers" thread, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner covers are good, even if most are in a "so bad it's good" way.

Rolf Harris - Stairway To Heaven. Pure bliss. Classic rock with a wobbleboard by someone who's never even heard the song before.

Therion - Summernight City (ABBA done operatic metal style!)

Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Webber) Unassailable. It's just fantastic.

Iced Earth - Highway To Hell (ACDC). It just rocks.

Sonata Arctica - Wind Beneath My Wings. It's funny.

Blind Guardian - Mr. Sandman (err... lots of 50s bands did it). Just plain hilarious. Hansi's drunken vocals make this great.

Sick dude, I heard the original, well not really, but I heard it played traditionally in a pub in Doolin, Ireland and I have to say Metallica pretty much raped it, and it sounds 800x better with irish accents.

Also, maybe it's just because of my extreme dislike of Nirvana (well, more of my dislike of people putting Cobain up as a rock-god and hearing their songs every 20 minutes on the radio) but I tended not to like any of their covers, especially Man Who Sold the World. David Bowie's original not only being the best, but it just kills Nirvana's cover any day. But I do have to give Nirvana good-feeling for busting up the hair metal/Kenny G scene of the late 80's/early 90's.

In 1997 Elton John did a cover of Queen's 1991 classic... Simply great. His sound doesn't sound like in his other songs, it is deep and powerful at this version. Simply superb. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
