Really great bands that you never hear of
2004-08-01, 5:51 PM #1
I need some new bands, so start posting any and every obscure band you know of and something about them.

Hears some I've come across

Brainstorm - Guys are from Germany, and, wow can the guy sing. From deep growls to really high pitched screams. Guitars and drums are great. Listen to Soul Temptation, really a killer album, only lags off a little at the end.

Soilwork - A Swedish(not 100% sure) band thats pretty danged good. If you're in to screaming, you'll like them. They also have some singing. There becomeing more popular after Natural Born Choas. You can find them in FYE at least (for an arm or a leg)

Ra - Not as uncommon as the first two, but you still don't hear much about them. An Egyptian rock band thats got some real potential. They aren't by any means metal, but the guitars are still good nonetheless. Your normal rock with Egyptian music mixed in is really better than it sounds like it would.

Uranus - Canadian band from early 90's that changed face of hardcore. Extremely influential. Had Yannick Lorrain on guitar.

His Hero is Gone - Huge hardcore band from a little later. Had Yannick on guitar towards the end of the band.

Tragedy - Yannick's current band from Portland, playing Pointless Fest right now.

Kylesa - awesome crust with somewhat of a metal edge from Georgia.

Corrupted - Incredibly awesome amazing Japanese hardcore. SLOWEST BAND ON THE PLANET. My favorite band.

Unholy Grave - Raw, brutal, unrelenting Japanese grindcore/crust. My new favorite also.

Sunn O))) - DRONE!!! The sound of planets dying, stars exploding. Extremely low end... Tower Records is carrying their new CD.

Khanate - Same guitarist as Sunn O))), featuring drums. Interesting sludge.

Wake Up On Fire - local band from around here that is slowly working its way towards national status. Dark crust with two drummers, two guitars, bass, a cello, and one insanely awesome singer. can get their CD at www.hardcoreholocaust.com

Discordance Axis - Fast and intricate as hell grindcore. A must.

Napalm Death - The inventors of grindcore. Only get their "Scum" release. After that they just decided to start sucking.

Extreme Noise Terror - Incoherent, brutal, sloppy crust from UK. Brilliant.

Antischism - straight up awesome hardcore. Had some of the best lyrics I've ever read. Discography available from Prank Records

Damad - Crazy female fronted downtuned mayhem.

Antisect - Influential mid 80's crust from UK.

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Orchestrated music with bass, drums, violins, two guitars, various other stringed instruments. Very very good. Think epic ~20 minute long songs with multiple buildups and climaxes. Music evokes the entire range of emotions.

Rudimentary Peni - AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. CLASSIC BAND. Earlier stuff is UK anarcho punk from the UK. Later stuff is well... interesting. I would suggest listening to their stuff in this order: EPs of RP, Death Church, Cacophony, Pope Adrian, and then disregard all the stuff they've done recently, it sucks.

Septic Death - Weird hardcore featuring Pushead on vocals. You may not recognize Pushead by name, but you have seen one of his pictures at least once at one time. He is a very prolific artist known for usually doing cover art for CDs.

Crass - UK anarcho-punk band from 1979-1984 (?). A crust classic.

Cress - a more recent band of similar name. Pretty cool. Same sort of thing.

World Burns to Death - I have not heard these guys, but I've been assured that they're awesome. Hardcore crust.

Against Me! - Awesome stuff. Listen: Pints of Guinness Make You Strong

Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Crazy awesome early punk stuff from ~1977. Richard Hell rules. Good lyrics, awesome guitars. Kind of jazzy.

Television - Much softer than anything else I've mentioned, except for Godspeed You Black Emperor. Has Tom Verlaine on guitars, friend of Richard Hell. Richard Hell actually used to be in the band I think, but left before anything was recorded. Really really good guitar work.

Gauze - Awesome Japanese hardcore from 80's, still around now. Sounds like the Japanese version of Germs or Plasmatics.

Blood Brothers - Quirky screamo stuff. Can't explain it very well.

Arab on Radar - REALLY quirky music. I can't easily categorize them. All the rhythm is made from weird lead riffs and strange drum beats. And then the singer has this high pitched, hilarious whining voice. He basically just talks.. Not for everyone, I guess.

Pg.99 - amazing screamo. Not around anymore, but the band broke up into countless side projects.. Three guitars, two basses, one drummer, two singers. Went from grinding and brutal to slow, beautiful riffs.

Pig Destroyer - Probably the current grind lords on the east coast right now. Incredible guitar work, perfect blast beats, screamo-like lyrics. Good vocals.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - ABSOLUTELY MIND SHATTERING. Guitarist of Pig Destroyer. So fast, they can't use a real drummer. They have to use a drum machine... released a minidisc with 100 songs. That's about 100 songs in ~20 minutes.

Dhamer - Insane grindcore. The guy uses a pitch shifter to make his voice ultra low.

Phobia - Good crusty grindcore. Very good.

Shikari - Scandinavian hardcore similar to Uranus. mp3s: http://www.bacteria.nl/Shikari_MP3.htm

Orchid - Also similar to Uranus and Shikari. Blends multiple styles together. Awesome.

Nausea - A crust punk classic. Get something by them.

OK that's all I can think of right now... My mind is kind of hazy, just woke up.

At the Gates: A Death Metal band from Sweden. Good, fast guitars, and good lyrics. They have a few slower songs (like into the dead sky)that are so incredibly different from the death metal that it's crazy. They have the normal death metal vocals, which are a mix of singing, screaming, barking, and grunting all at once. Get any of their cds. they're all good.

Pitchshifter- I don't know too much about them, but I like them anyway. They are industrial with some neo-metal. Singing with cool sounding guitars and weird techno keyboard stuff. For a sample go play Twisted Metal 3 and get to the second level. The background music is 'microwaved'.Get the Deviant CD if your interested.

Against me!-as he said, they're freaking awesome.

Screaching Weasels- this is as obscure as it gets. So much so that I don't know anything about them. I think that they are rock.

Hot Beef Injection- my band. we have no idea what we are. Death metal/gothic industrial is the closest we can think of. We currently have no cds and only one song of our own, pirates of the kitchen.

Jeremiah Freed - Classic Rock the likes of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd blended with the post-grunge sound of bands like The Black Crowes.

Paranoid Social Club - A garage band with soul. Or they'd like you to think. A three piece band that tackles serious issues like which drugs you should be on when listening to a particular song.

Marc Broussard - Louisiana Blues player. Live, it's just him and his bassist.

Jonny Graves - A four piece rock band mixing classic era rock with today's radio friendly rock.

6gig - Uh... they're good? It's hard to describe them, because they're not like other bands. Heavy rock music with an emo lead singer... sort of. But not quite. They're good.

The Ramones - They're an underground band from the 50s or something. They started shuffle beats or something.

The Barenaked Ladies - You've never heard of them but they invented pants.

Dispatch - they invented Jack Johnson. And before you skin me alive, they're better. Much much MUCH better. See; "The General", "Prince of Spades" and "Mission" before telling me I'm wrong.

The Coral - Up and coming retro rock band, circa 1970s. Try "Dreaming of You".
The Last True Evil - consistent nobody in the Discussion Forum since 1998

Red Letter Agent - Atlanta band. Tries to be Coldplay, like they even set the drums up sideways and dress like them, BUT they have some really good songs.

The Films - formerly Tinkers Punishment. Fun alternative/punky/that sound that's popular right now kind of band. Their best stuff is unreleased and I just got it because I'm friends with the guy that produced them.

Rosebud - think Norah Jones but with the guy from Jump as the singer.

Jump - tied with U2 for my favorite band. Alternative, funky, rock. If you listen to Say Goodnight you'll squeal like a schoolgirl and be hooked.

The Ramones aren't underground.....They've been around for ages, and everyone knows about them. Same with the Barenaked Ladies. BNL were more popular in the 90's though.

Also, Pitchshifter rocks.

If MQ says a band called "Triac" do not believe him. Triac is like taking a big, thrusting a knife into it's stomach, twisting said knife, setting the pig on fire, and then adding distortion.

Screaching Weasle and Scratching Post are both good.

Oh!! And "The Gone Jackals." They're kind of early rock/grungyish kind of. But not quite. Get "Legacy" for sure, and a few others.

Jim's Big Ego - Describe themselves as "UnPop" and i can't think of a better way to describe their music

Lucky Boys Confusion - Punk band from Chicago, just on the verge of hitting it big (example of such being in the trailers/comercials for Without a Paddle their music is featured). Number 3 on my top 5 favorite bands list. A group of really great guys, I've gotten a chance to talk to some of they guy after a couple of shows when they weren't insanely drunk, and I would have to say that LBC is a band that really appreciates their fans.

Suburban Legends - A ska band from CA I think . . not completely sure . . . This band puts on the best live show I have seen in years. I saw them on tour at shows on 7/28, 7/29, and 7/31. The were touring with the Coast to Coast Roast, headlined by Reel Big Fish. SL, Catch-22, RX Bandits, and Lucky Boys Confusion opening. those were great shows.

Fluke! They've been around forever, and they did the music for the crappy Zion Rave scene in Matrix Reloaded, as well as (I believe) the music in the end credits of Tomb Raider. And if you go to their website you get a free mp3. Yays! My favorite vocalist ever.

hah. I've been putting this one back long enough.

Ayreon - the brainchild of Arjen Lucassen, a really great composer. music ranges from heavy metal to smoother progressive rock. the latest album, The Human Equation, is a rock opera with 14(if i remember right) singers togheter, including people like James Labrie from Dream Theater, Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad, Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, Russel Allen from Symphony X. it's great. try to find the single, "Loser".

Dragonforce - Power Metal band with crazy guitar riffing and really heavy drums, compared to the more laid back drums of Rhapsody and Blind Guardian, Dragonforce is really about each instrument playing at their best speed. their new album, Sonic Firestorm, has some of the best solos i've heard. nice stuff, albeit a bit cliche like all power metal.

Sins Of Omission (disbanded) - Their only good album was the first one, but simply because -this- was sins of omission, before their lead guitar player/compose/vocalist left. try to find "The Creation", though it's -really- hard to find in stores, or even (gasp) download.

Ensiferum - A finnish folk metal band. really great, jumpy, and folkish. lots of drunken sing along choruses, nice solos, catchy rythm guitar work and great melodies. I'm surprised they aren't known. their latest album is Iron, and is as metal as it gets.

Illnath - Illnath is -the- band that will replace Cradle of Filth as the best mainstream black metal band. They're up to one EP and one Album, and both are really good straighforward black metal, with a versatile screamer that can do anything dani filth himself does, but with a keyword: Balance. it -never- gets annoying.

Into Eternity - Progressive Metal band, in the veins of dream theater, but with a screamed vocal alongside the sung parts. It's great, but the songs sometimes drag along. the guitar player's skills are undeniable though.

Racer X - 80's style rock band. Paul Gilbert is grinding the axe, and he really is a mean player. this band is for all guitar lovers that enjoyed the 80's wave of rock like Van Halen, AC/DC, Dokken, Whitesnake. The singer is also very good, and really adds that rock'n roll vibe that gets me so happy.

Tvangeste - Russian Symphonic Black Metal band, their second album, Firestorm, was recorded with the prague orchestra. each song is really epic, but you either love or hate the screamer. Something to check out if you like big orchestras with guitars.

There are plenty of other good bands, but I just posted those that are alot less known. Happy exploration.

Kaizers Orchestra. Norwegian band with eastern European influence.
http://kaizers.no/index.php3?ID=English

Lacrimosa. German gothic band that uses a lot of classical music. Some of their songs are mostly classical music with just a little bit of gothic metal thrown in occasionally. I especially recommend "Alleine zu zweit"

Gåte. Norwegian band of some sort of folkish rock music.
