Really great bands that you never hear of
2004-08-15, 10:58 PM #41
Oooh, just to make people look bad I'll post the ones I have heard of that were mentioned here! Except for the obviously sarcastic ones.
(It's good to be back [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif])

Godspeed you Black Emperor
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Television- and I like them too
Blood Brothers
Screaching Weasels
Jeremiah Freed
Dillinger Escape Plan
Ima Robot
My Bloody Valentine- Awesome band
Tower of Power
The Gone Jackals- I'd call them more heavy mental than grunge.

Now, my own semi-and-not-so-semi-and-not-so-obscure bands that people will all say they've heard of:
The Crucif***s- A weird punk band

Mutual Admiration Society- A collaboration between Nickel Creek and Glen Phillips. When I saw them live they also had John Paul Jones from Led Zepplin on bass and Pete Thompson from Elvis Costello and the Attractions on drums.

Big Star- Essential power pop band from the 70's

Chris Bell- Member of Big Star with one solo album

Prefrab Sprout- A band from the 80's that did sort of power pop.

Orange Juice- A band from the 80's that sounds like a cross between David Bowie and the Psychedelic Furs

Popa Chubby- Electric Blues

Television Personalities- 80's post punk

Aztec Camera- Awesome 80's new-wave band

Beborn Beton- Sort of a goth/dance band

Jesus and Mary Chain- Band from the 80's with buzzing guitars

Exploding Hearts- punk

Les Sans Cullotes- French pop

McLusky- punk

Sloan- power pop

Electrafixion- Singer and guitarist of Echo and the Bunnymen

The Rezillos- punk

The Craig- From the 60's. So obscure that I know nothing about them and they apparently only recorded one song.

Of course you've heard of Jeremiah Freed! I mention them every chance I get [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Unless you've seen them live. In which case, I applaud you because none of these other wankers have!

You're right, that's probably where I heard of them. I guess they don't count on my list.

Where've you been, dry gear? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Umm, all I listen to is independent artists, but here are some awesome ones I'm listening to currently:

Extra Glenns - Awesome acoustic guitar music with incredible lyrics and distinct vocals. Listen to Ultra Violet at Epitonic.

1 Mile North - Creepy, eerie ambient music.

Elliott - Definitely one of the best bands I've heard in a while. Some of the most inspiring, beautiful music I've heard in a while. It starts mellow and builds up, using strings, pianos and other instruments.

!!! - Pronounced Chik Chik Chik, think punk rock that you can dance to.

The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up - Good indie rock that is radio friendly and anyone can enjoy. Check out Reckless Driving on Epitonic.

A Silver Mt. Zion - A side project from the members of Godspeed You Black Emperor; very good. Usually dark and creepy, using an assortment of instruments.

The Burning Paris - Just bought their CD; incredible band that uses strings and regular rock instruments to create sweeping melodies that inspire and calm.

Telegraph Melts - A two person band with just a cello and guitar. Check out Septembrist on Epitonic.

Defiance, Ohio - Incredible punk band... think Against Me with strings and other instruments. You can download their whole album at their website in either MP3 or OGG. Please check out the song Bikes and Bridges... you won't be sorry.

Streetlight Manifesto - One of the best ska bands of our time... a must-have.

Against Me! - One of my favorite bands... check out the MP3 MadQuack posted.

Halifax Pier - Another one of my favorites... can't really describe them, just that it's great rock that anyone can enjoy. I think Spork and Schming would enjoy them a lot. Check out the song Lightly Noise.

Eluvium - Powerful piano music. I can't believe this guy just takes a regular Panasonic boombox, and records these songs. Check out An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death.

Ha! I've heard of them too! (I really like their song about the robot. I think it's called Space Robot 5)

Well, good question. Sometimes I just get bored with message boards for a few months.

Was it you that mentioned the Mountain Goats once? I downloaded Palmcorder Yajna a while ago and recently decided I really like it.

I guess I should add Elliott and !!! to my list. I had wondered how to spell !!!, that's interesting.

I guess I'll add more:
Mirah- I'm not sure how to describe them yet
The Plastic Constellations- post-punk
Gorilla Biscuits- Straight edge hardcore punk
Lapdog- Pop/Rock
Public Image Ltd- post-punk. Led by John Lydon.

Some that aren't really that obscure, but most people here don't seem to know them:
Bad Brains- DC punk. The singer has an insane voice.

The Replacements- Major 80's punkish hard-rock band

Billy Bragg- Part of the anti-folk movement. A political working class-type singer/songwriter in the mold of Woodie Guthrie and Bob Dylan

Bauhaus- One of the original "goth" bands. A lot of today's goth kids overlook Bauhaus, but that's just fine with Bauhaus fans.

The Sisters of Mercy- See Bauhaus

Love and Rockets- Bauhaus sans the singer.

Tones on Tail- A side project of Daniel Ash, a great guitarist. Their song Go! is known by a lot of people who don't even know who played it.

Bright Eyes- I don't really know how to describe them. I only have one album, Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground. It's acoustic indie stuff I guess.

The Church- 80's new-wave slightly gothish band.

Guided by Voices- They do really short, poppy songs.

John Vanderslice- Weird indie stuff

Yo La Tengo- Awesome shoegazing band.
