Complete list so far:

http://www.gnoosic.com <- input the names of artists and music gropus you like, and it will give you a list of other artists/music groups that you may or may not have heard of, but will also probably like

http://www.songtitle.info <- A list of names and artists for songs that have appeared in tv commercials.

http://www.allmusic.com <- Look up a band and you can see a biography, a list of all the band members, a list of some of their influences, a list of similar bands, a list of bands they influenced, other bands the members were in, and a discography with reviews. Some bands have more information than others, obviously.

http://www.audioscrobbler.com/ <- Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

http://www.mysongbook.com <- AWESOME for guitar players, requires Guitar Pro tab software though.

http://www.mxtabs.net <- not just for the tabs but the forums are pretty good places for tips and stuff, I learned some great popping techniques from some greats dudes on the forum.

http://www.wholenote.com

http://www.activebass.com

http://www.killhannah.com

Feel free to keep posting more...

I meant to post this an hour ago, but firefox keeps crashing. I'm biting the bullet and using IE.

The irony of this site is that it only really knows popular bands/artists who play mainstream music.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
2004-09-15, 7:30 AM #8
Really? I've had it give me plenty of non-mainstream artists, Flexor.
2004-09-15, 7:47 AM #9
Same here. It seemed to know a lot of underground electronic musicians/groups.

The database is constantly updated based on your replies of "I like them," "I dont like them," and "Never heard of them," So it only makes sense that it would be a bit better at grouping music that the majority of people enter into the search.
2004-09-15, 5:30 PM #10
It says I will like a band called 'Vaakevandring' we shall see.
Think while it's still legal.
2004-09-16, 3:52 AM #11
It knew none of the names I've tried. And I wasn't even trying too hard, I put in big names like crystal method and fluke.

2004-09-16, 10:00 AM #12
Well, I'd try again because since the last time you tried it's learned both of those names. ;)
2004-09-16, 6:14 PM #13
Crystal Method works for me. Gives me some pretty good results too.
2004-09-16, 9:21 PM #14
Yeah, it knew some of the fairly obscure stuff I put in like Big Star and Chris Bell.

I also tried putting in the 3 most obscure punk bands I could think of, and it gave me a whole bunch of stuff I've never heard of.

http://www.beatles-discography.com/

I don't want to go so far as to say complete history the Beatles, but it's pretty close. Just go to the "song-by-song, day-by-day, record-by-record index".

If you want to go really in depth with The Beatles, check this out.
If you click on the songs, you see notes on them by Alan Pollack, a musicologist. He goes in to extreme depth with each song, pointing out arrangement, chord progressions, music structure, rhythm, and tons of other stuff. Most of it is way over my head.

I'll definitely check that site out. I'd like to know as much about the Beatles as possible.

The site you mentioned is more about how the made their songs, while the site I mentioned is more about what inspired them to make the song, and what was going on with the band at the time. Both are really in depth and worth checking out for any Beatles fan.

Yes. Even if you don't understand a lot of the stuff on the site I linked, it's still interesting. You come out with a lot more respect for the Beatles as well.

Your site is also cool.

Tab of every guitar chord ever.

Audiscrobbler seems to crash my Winamp (5.03a). Anyone else having problems with it or know of a fix? When I uninstall the plugin, Winamp works great again.
2004-09-28, 6:50 PM #24
Holy crap, that almost looks like a phone line input on that les paul.....oooh, that would be wierd, playing guitar using telephone dial-tones as the sound. Damn, that's a good idea. :D

Isn't it CAT-5?
2004-10-16, 8:14 PM #26
www.metalrules.com

A must for any metal head.
2004-10-17, 7:25 PM #27
No, it's not CAT-5. It's similar though. I was reading up on that the other day. It's main beauty is individual processing for each string and no sound quality loss.
2004-10-17, 10:19 PM #28
The sites insound.com and epitonic.com both have a large selection of free, legal mp3s. Holy crap!

Pitchfork - Great indie music site. It has an extensive collection of reviews and the latest news on artists.

Delusions of Adequacy - Another indie music site with the biggest collection of reviews I've ever seen. Great site.

Downhill Battle - Music activisim site with tons of articles and editorials about the state of the music industry. A must-read.

I forgot about Delusions of Adequacy, thanks.

I read Pitchfork every weekday. It's great.

Yeah, the gnoosic site wasn't that good at all. I entered Metallica, it returned Judas Priest. Entered Megadeth, returned Judas Priest. Entered Iron Maiden, returned Judas Priest. I think that whoever made the database doesn't particularly care for or know about that many genres of music, so they just added well known bands for the genres they don't specialize in.

Far better than gnoosic :)

Non-RIAA record label. Good stuff.

Lyrics to all Muse songs, if you're into that sort of thing (which I most definately am).

http://www.purevolume.com/

Lots of Indie/Punk/Rock. Not the greatest music, but you'll find something good every once in a while.

Not sure if this is a 'music' link, but its close enough:

http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Its for Exact Audio Copy, as you can tell. Its an excellent, free CD Ripping program, just about the best. If you have/get LAME, it can rip and convert to MP3 for you. The difference as compared to, say, WMP ripping is incredible.

Good site for the samples, but other than that it makes no sense. What's up with the links between genres? some of those really shouldn't be. And don't get me started about the trance section! I could name a thousand things wrong with that!

Yeah, it's definitely a little biased. :p
