Powerful songs

The song was just really bland apart from the lyrics. It was really lacking a hook. For me, a powerful song makes me want to cry, kick something, or shout (in a good way). Sad. Mad. Super Happy. If a song doesnt make me feel one of those 3 ways then it's not really powerful.

I don't see how it's any less hooky or bland than Where the Streets Have No Name.

the last two soldiers on the battlefield
survivors of the war
they aim at one another while their mothers beg the lord
"if you're listening, i'm missing him
so somehow bring him home
how did it come to this?"
so the soldiers lift their rifles
they're aiming at the head
they think of their first love before they take their final breaths
and some where in the distance they hear something someone said: "how did it come to this?"

- Streetlight Manifesto - "The Big Sleep"

Perhaps one of the most vivid images I've gotten of the second World War excluding Call of Duty. They (being Streetlight, Catch 22, and BotAR) seem to like Hemingway a great deal, and thus are obsessed with war and its effects on people. It shows in their music.

Wonderful song.

In fact, any Sonata Arctica really.

Victoria's Secret is secks.

Don't think that songs like Shy and tallulah are really powerful though..

Um, because the music in Streets is amazing and continues the momentum of the song. There is also a definite hook in the chorus.

I dont want to insult your musical taste, I'm just saying that to me, that song was bland and had no hook. It reminded me of Edwin McCain.

I didn't take it as an insult, and I wasn't trying to make a shot at U2, though it does look a lot like I did.
I was attempting to make a comparison between the two songs, even though they're totally different, because I guess both of them are either bland or powerful.

Unfortunately, the first 3 songs on TJT don't do much for me anymore because I hear them way too much. I used to love them. It's different from Coldplay's first album, which I used to love but don't like anymore. I still consider myself a fan of the famous 3 songs from TJT.

I just fear I've scared you and the observers away from Toad. I still think I can get you into them though, I just have to try harder.

I'd tell you to give She Tried, which I linked to earlier in this thread, a listen, but the link isn't working. It might not be interesting at first, but it all builds up to a spectacular ending.

I'll post some more that you can try out. Anyone else can too, but you seem to be the only person interested. The songs aren't overtly powerful, but they're still very strong.

Glen Phillips- True (live) This song is really good! It's one of his poppier songs. Actually, though, he co-wrote it with Dan Wilson from Semisonic.

Glen Phillips- Back on My Feet (Demo) This song is really beautiful, but I wish that this version had a guitar playing instead of the organ chords. This is a soft song, but it does pick up.

Glen Phillips- Gabriel (live) This song is really soft, so you have to be in the right mood for it.

I'll post more, unless there's a total lack of interest.

Ya, I know what you mean about the first 3 songs from the Joshua Tree just not doing it for you anymore. I usually just set my iPod to skip them and Bullet to go straight to Running to Stand Still.

I'm listening to True right now. It's pretty good, reminds me of Athens-rock stuff... Ya, I can say that and be vague because Athens is an hour from where I live.

I'm on Back on My Feet now and it reminds me of a song on Beck's latest album\one of my friend's songs. I like.

Gabriel - i've pinned down who his voice reminds me of, Edwin McCain. I think I've said it before actually, but it really does. It's not a bad thing, or a good thing. Actually this song reminds me of Edwin McCain's Let Them in Peter. Probably because of similar themes and chord structures.

I really think you'd like Damien Rice if you're not into his stuff already.

I will have to check him out. Pitchfork gave O a bad review, but I don't always agree with them anyway.
He got a really good review from AMG.
If you know of any free mp3's that are legal, I'll download a song.
I'm thinking of buying some Paul Westerberg/Replacements stuff now though, so I don't think I'll buy his album really soon.

Edwin McCain sounds like the name a serial killer would have.

does AMG give anyone the review they actually deserve though? That was the best review I've read and it said nothing but good things about the album, but still a little bit shy of 5/5.

www.damienrice.com has samples of almost all his songs.

AMG generally tries to be as unbiased as possible.
4.5 stars is really good for them. 4 stars is considered a good album even.

I'll check out those song clips tomorrow.

Psh, ***-faces, the whole lot of them. Giving Jump 2 stars and Damien only 4.5 And then they give almost every Green Day album 4.5's? Ya right.

They give some Toad albums low reviews also.

Green Day isn't that bad. Some of their songs suck, but they're better than all of the bands that they influenced.

Explosions in the Sky - A Song for our Fathers

A bit like Billy Joel's Goodnight Saigon in that it also starts and ends with an instrument mimicking the tell-tale whop-whop-whop blades of a Huey. Slowly builds with a bass-line, and a snare drum and the rest of the band joining in and building until a crescendo, a slight drop, and back to the mock Huey blades.

Explosions in the Sky - Have You Passed through this Night?
This great evil? Where's it come from? How'd it steal into the world? From what seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doing this? Who's killing us? Robbing us of life and light. Mocking us with the sight of what we might have known. Does our world benefit the earth? Does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you too? Have you passed through this night?
Uses narrative from The Thin Red Line to haunting effect. Musical stillness.

God Speed You Black Emperor! - Rockets fall on Rocket Falls
Music to watch the world go to hell by way of thermonuclear war.

Van Morrison - TB Sheets
Helplessly watching someone die painfully and inevitably slowly on a hospital bed.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

That's not even one of their better songs. 1959 is by far their most powerful.

The sun ablaze as Maria's foot
Touches the surface of sand
On northern land
As human contraband
Some rico from Jalisco
Passed her name to the boss
She stuffed ten to a truckbed
She clutches her cross
Here comes the exhaust
And it rips through her lungs
She's off fast to the pasture
Like cattle she'll cross
Degree 106
Sweat and vomit are thrown
And she prays and suffocates
Upon the memories of home
Of Yanqui guns for blood debts on the loans
Of smoldering fields rape rubble and bones
Of graves hidden trapped up in visions of war

Of nothing,
No one,
Nobody,
No more.

These are her mountains and skies and she radiates,
Through history's rivers of blood she regenerates,
And like the sun disappears only to reappear,
She's eternally here,
Her time is near,
Never conquered but here.

To tear away at the mask!

And now she got a quota
The needle and thread crucifixion
Sold and shipped across the new line of Mason Dixon
Ripping through denim
The point an inch from her vein
The foreman approach
His steps now pound in her brain
His presence it terrifies
And eclipses her days
No minutes to rest
No moment to pray
And with a whisper
He whips her
Her soul chained to his will
"My job is to kill if you forget to take your pill"
Her arms jerks
The sisters gather round her and scream
As if in a dream
Eyes on the crimson stream
Numb as her wrists spit shots of blood to the floor

I am nothing,
No one,
Nobody,
No more.

These are her mountains and skies and she radiates,
And through history's rivers of blood she regenerates,
And like the sun disappears only to reappear,
Maria...
She's eternally here,
Her time is near,
Never conquered but here.
