Indeed. Social consciousness transcends musical boundaries. Even though REM didn't really cut themselves off from rap. In their later years they experimented with it, and even had KRS-One sing on one of their songs.

Toad the Wet Sprocket- Don't Go Away
[this song is so incredible. The music is just as beautiful as the lyrics]

We were sharing so many words and feelings
Age is heaver, it seems, than years alone
But, I told you things I wouldn't dream of telling anyone
Are we drying out, like flowers from a forgotten someone

Don't go away
I can't feel the same without you

We were making so many plans and secrets
We would both be millionaires or kings or presidents
But like everything those little dreams
Just kind of came and went
Hard now to make ends meet
How soon we all forget

Don't go away
I can't feel the same without you...

Temp and Dry:

That's what I love about music and musicians. They tend to voice things in a way most people cannot. Music is the best way to get across messages (political for example) or just to get out your moods, be it sadness, longing, anger, or elation.

I've ALWAYS loved music and music lyrics and many artists have had diff. influences on me. Tupac being one of those many artists. But I like all genre's of music basically.

I know I want to do something Music based but what exactly yet I'm not sure. At first I thought music production now I"m not sure if I want to be a manager for groups but I DO know I want to be the CEO of my own company. Baby steps. Really i'm only now learning lots of things, but music is one of the only things that's ever really made me passionate in life.

And songs with their lyrics and all I've just always loved, listening, relating, interpreting them etc. Dunno maybe it's just me, but I find it as something fun to do.

Yeah dry gear, those r some nice lyrics. And the KRS One and REM song I knew about, but I haven't heard. So the melody I dunno, but I'll be searching for it soon :)

But yeah, Boricua and you pointed out the main reason why I am so into Tupac's music. He spoke the truth, about everything. The one great thing about his music, if you listen to the lyrics, is that you can relate to it. No matter who you are. His music covers such a broad spectrum of issues and hypocracies. His music really makes you think and realise some things.

Music to me is a way to bring people together. But not the new music, there's not much more symbolism or meaning behind most of the lyrics sung nowadays. It's all about the "bling bling" look at my nice cars, kill your wife and steal your girlfriend, kinda crap.

Artists like REM and Tupac really expanded their genres to me, they were the Einstein's or Hawking's of music in their genre.

Mein Teil - Rammstein

was du isst
und ihr wisst
was es ist

Es ist mein Teil – nein
Mein Teil – nein
Denn das ist mein Teil – nein
Mein Teil – nein

Die stumpfe Klinge – gut und recht
Ich blute stark und mir ist schlecht
Muss ich auch mit der Ohnmacht kämpfen
ich esse weiter unter Krämpfen

Ist doch so gut gewürzt
und so schön flambiert
und so liebevoll auf Porzellan serviert
Dazu ein guter Wein und zarter Kerzenschein
Ja da lass ich mir Zeit
Etwas Kultur muss sein

Denn du bist
was du isst
und ihr wisst
was es ist

Es ist mein Teil – nein
Mein Teil – nein
Denn das ist mein Teil – nein
Yes it's mein Teil – nein

Ein Schrei wird zum Himmel fahren
schneidet sich durch Engelscharen
Vom Wolkendach fällt Federfleisch
auf meine Kindheit mit Gekreisch

Es ist mein Teil – nein
Mein Teil – nein
Denn das ist mein Teil – nein
Mein Teil – nein
Think while it's still legal.

Well, actually the song kind of sucks. I've heard a live version without KRS-One, and it's even worse without him.
The song is Radio Song from their album Out of Time.
The music video is also kind of lame. Michael Stipe seems like he's trying to come across as some hip-hop tough guy in it and comes off as more of a dork. :)

So true! I agree completely on that point. The better musicians are those that speak from the honest truth of experiance. That true music is not just about violence an what not or trying to make money, but instead it's about human truths. True music sends messages and speaks to people on various levels and heightens awareness on diff. issues. Love, politics, life. So true :) And yes REM is also a good group :)

Faith No More - RV

Backside melts into the sofa
My world, my tv, and my food
Besides listening to my belly gurgle
Ain't much else to do
Yeah, i sweat a lot
Pants fall down every time i bend over
And my feet itch
Yeah - I married a scarecrow
I hate you
Talkin' to myself
Everybody's starin' at me
I'm only bleedin'
Someone taps me on the shoulder every 5 minutes
Nobody speaks english anymore
Would anyone tell me if i was gettin' stupider?
I hate you
Talkin' to myself
You don't feel it after awhile
You take the beating
I'm a swingin' guy
Throw a belt over the shower curtain rod
And swing - - -
Toss me inside a hefty
And put me in the ground
A drink needs me
I don't
I ain't about to guzzle no tears
So kiss my ***
Newscasters, cockroaches, and desserts
I hate you
Talkin' to myself
Everybody's starin' at me
I'm only bleedin'
where are the kids?

more faith no more.

Midlife Crisis this time around.

Go on and wring my neck
Like when a rag gets wet
A little discipline
For my pet genius
My head is like a lettuce
Go on and dig your thumbs in
I cannot stop giving
I'm thirty-something
Sense of security
Like pockets jingling
Midlife crisis
Suck ingenuity
Down through the family tree
You're perfect, yes, it's true
But without me you're only you
Your menstruating heart
It ain't bleeding enough for two
It's a midlife crisis...
What an inheritance
The salt and the kleenex
Morbid self attention
Bending my pinky back
A little discipline
A donor by habit
A little discipline
Rent an opinion
Sense of security
Holding blunt instrument
I'm a perfectionist
And perfect is a skinned knee
You're perfect, yes, it's true
But without me you're only you
Your menstruating heart
It ain't bleeding enough for two
It's a midlife crisis...............

One more.... same band, same album, this song is called Land of Sunshine.

I love the way patton deals with random as hell topics with a caustic kinda wit and insanity about his lyrics and vocals.

You have a winning way, so keep it
Your future
You are an angel heading for a land of sunshine
And fortune us smiling upon you
Prepare for a series of comfortable miracles
From fasting to feasting
And life to you is a dashing, bold adventure
So sing and rejoice
And look for the dream that keeps
Coming back
Your future
Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a handshake
Cuz everything is not yet lost
(does life seem worthwhile to you?)
HERE'S HOW TO ORDER!
Does life seem worthwhile to you?
Do others push you around?
Is age against you?
Sing and rejoice!
Does life seem worthwhile to you?
Does emotional music
Have quite an effect on you?
I-I can help
I can help you
I can help you help yourself!
HERE'S HOW TO ORDER!
Varicose
Comatose
Senile

Tom Waits- Poor Edward

"Did you hear the news about Edward?
On the back of his head he had another face
Was it a woman's face or a young girl?
They said to remove it would kill him
So poor Edward was doomed

The face could laugh and cry
It was his devil twin
And at night she spoke to him
Things heard only in hell
But they were impossible to separate
Chained together for life

Finally the bell tolled his doom
He took a suite of rooms
And hung himself and her from the balcony irons
Some still believe he was freed from her
But I knew her too well
I say she drove him to suicide
And took poor Edward to hell"

That song is so scary. Tom Waits makes scary music.

Damn, Schming, I still haven't downloaded that song. I promise I'll get to it! I've been busy with school and work and stuff.
I'll post some Billy Bragg lyrics. He does folkish/punk/slightly political in the vein of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan.

Between the Wars
(you could sing along with it, the melody is a lot like old folk working class songs.)

I was a miner
I was a docker
I was a railway man
Between the wars
I raised a family
In times of austerity
With sweat at the foundry
Between the wars

I paid the union and as times got harder
I looked to the government to help the working man
And they brought prosperity down at the armoury
Between the wars

I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we knew
Between the wars

Call up the craftsmen
Bring me the draughtsmen
Build me a path from cradle to grave
And I'll give my consent
To any government
That does not deny a man a living wage

Go find the young men never to fight again
Bring up the banners from the days gone by
Sweet moderation
Heart of this nation
Desert us not, we are
Between the wars
It's not the side effects of cocaine, so then I'm thinking that it must be love

Neutral Milk Hotel- King of Carrot Flowers Part 1

When you were young you were the King of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all round your feet.

And your Mum would stick a fork right into Daddy’s shoulder
And Dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other’s bodies were for.

And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no-one dares to go.

And your mum would drink until she was no longer speaking
And Dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try…

well there was some Janet lyrics I wanted to post from the song "free xone" b ut for some reason I guess on the site I went to it said "artist doesn't want lyrics on the internet and we respect that" which means, I cant post the lyrics. so o well

here are some other lyrics I like

She Will Be Loved
by Maroon 5

Album : Songs About Jane

Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else

I drove for miles and miles
And wound up at your door
I've had you so many times but somehow
I want more

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
And she will be loved

Tap on my window, knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
I know I tend to get so insecure
It doesn't matter anymore

It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along
My heart is full and my door's always open
You can come anytime you want

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved

I know where you hide
Alone in your car
Know all of the things that make you who you are
I know that goodbye means nothing at all
Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls

Tap on my window, knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful

I don't mind spending every day
Out on your corner in the pouring rain, oh
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved
And she will be loved

Please don't try so hard to say goodbye
Please don't try so hard to say goodbye

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain

Please don't try so hard to say goodbye

The Black Crowes - Nonfiction

I don’t know my telephone number
But you kiss good and I’d like to
See you tomorrow
And I don’t beg, I pay, I don’t barter
And if we had a child I’d like a son,
Not a daughter
’cause she’d be just like you
You know that would not do
I’m no builder, I’m no gardener
I sing some songs, have a friend
Who’s a photographer
There ain’t no other language
I know how to speak
Some like their water shallow
And I like mine deep
Tied to the bottom
With a noose around my feet

The clouds conspire
Above my head
I overheard them
Say I wish he was dead
Today the sunset
Burned my eyes
And in the next room I hear someone cry
I like to dress up like the jury
To eat like a king, to poke fun at clergy
To talk like dirt
To love yo like tar
But never fall in too fast
With my north star
While you pull your hair out
I buy the drinks at the bar
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

The Black Crowes - Cursed Diamond

I lose myself
I forget myself
Sometimes I fault myself
I might fight myself
But then I make amends
I freeze myself
Rain on myself
Ok, so I stone myself
And I might even find myself
But then again what happens if I do
So unzip my pride
Open me up wide
So I can show this to you

I want to shine for you
I want to sparkle too
Just like a diamond cursed
Well you know it don’t get worse
You know that I’ll save you time
Your trouble now is mine
Hold me baby
Hold me girl
And I will laugh with you
If you want me to
Roll me in your splendor
I’ll envy your surrender
And show you victory
I hate myself
Doesn’t everybody hate themselves
I scare myself
Then I tell myself it’s all in my mind
So I let the poison go
’cause I always know
It will be there for me
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

Spin Doctors - Forty or Fifty

Forty or fifty horses
Lying in a lot.
Red raincoats and rifles,
An epidemic has been stopped.
Scientist speaks what are you
Wondering about?
He got where he is by turning
Lab mice inside out.

The things we do
And have to do
The things I do for you
And what you do for me too
The yeah, but i...
And any other excuse
And if you take it for given
Then what’s the use

All his possessions
Around him in his house,
Lying beside him his
Companion and his spouse.
And in the morning
He dress and go to hell.
All activated by
A little timer bell.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

A Mi Amor Tu Vas A Extranar
by Mdo

Yo no creia
Que solo me mentias
Juraba que lo nuestro
Era real
Mas hoy comprendo
Que en ti no hay sentimientos
Que por mi bien
Me tengo que marchar
Supongo que jamas
Tu vas a cambiar
Inutil fue creer
Que puedes amar
Se que no te importa hacerme daño
Que te da igual saber que aun te amo
Para ti, nunca existi
Mas ya veras cuando te enamores
De alguien a quien no le importes
Sufriras y a mi amor tu vas a extranar
Yo no sabia, que te desconosia
Hoy sufro por lo que no pudo ser
Que tonto he sido
Pensando que contingo
Un dia llegaria a envejecer
Supongo que jamas
Tu vas a cambiar
Inutil fue creer
Que tu me llegues a amar
Se que no te importa hacerme dano
Que te da igual saber que aun te amo
Para ti, nunca existi
Mas ya veras cuando te enamores de alguien a quien no le importes
sufriras y a mi amor tu vas a extranar
Para que continuar
Cuando se que es el final
Tu no me amas
Lo tengo que aceptar
Se que no te importa hacerme daño
Que te da igual saber que aun te amo
Para ti, nunca exisit
Mas ya veras cuando te enamores
De alguein a quien no le importes
Sufrias y a mi amor tu vas a extranar

Translation (roughly translated) :

"You'll Miss My Love"

I didnt think
That you were only lying to me
I thought that what we had
was real
Today I've come to understand
That you dont have feelings (sentiments)
That for my own good
I have to leave
I guess you are never going to change
It was usless
thinking that you could love
I know you dont care if you hurt me
That you could care less to know that I still love you
For you, I never exsisted
You'll see that one day when you fall in love with someone who doesnt care for you
that It'll hurt, and you'll miss my love
I didn't know that I never really knew you at all
Today I suffer for that which will never be
How silly I've been
thinking that one day we might grow old together
I guess You'll never change
It was silly thinking
that one day you might come to love me
I know you dont care if you hurt me
That it doesnt matter for u to know that I still love you
In your eyes, I've never exsisted
You'll see that one day when you fall in love with someone who doesnt care about you
that it'll hurt and you'll miss my love
Why should I continue with this
When I know that this is the end
You dont love me
I'll have to accept that
I know that you dont care if you hurt me
that it doesnt matter to you, to know that I still love you
In your eyes, I've never exsisted
You'll see that one day when you fall in love with someone who doesnt care for you
that it'll hurt and you'll miss my love

The Whitlams - No Aphrodisiac

A letter to you on a cassette
'Cause we don't write anymore
Gotta make it up quickly
There's people asleep on the second floor
There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
Truth, beauty and a picture of you

You'll be walking your dog in a few hours
I'll be asleep in my brother's house
You're a thousand miles away
With food between your teeth
Come up for summer I've got a place near the beach
There's room for your dog

There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
Truth, beauty and a picture of you

There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
Truth, beauty and a picture of you

There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
Youth, truth, beauty, fame, boredom and a bottle of pills

There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
You shouldn't leave me alone

There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness
Bare feet like a tom-boy and a crooked smile

Truth youth beauty fame boredom red hair no hair innocence
Saturday and a picture of you
A letter to you on a cassette
You shouldn't leave me alone

Forty shaved sexy wants to do it all day
With a gun-totin' trigger-happy tranny named Kinky Renée
Tired teacher twenty-eight seeks regular meetings for masculine muscular nappy-clad brutal breeding
While his wife rough-wrestles with a puppy all aquiver
on a wine-soaked strobe-lit Asiatic hall of mirrors and a dash of loneliness
There's no aphrodisiac quite like it
Truth, youth, beauty, fame, boredom, red hair, no hair, innocence, impunity and a picture of you
I got a video set-up me love you short time she pay me suck his finger with some fine wine and a dash of loneliness
Truth, youth, beauty, fame, boredom, red hair, no hair, innocence, awkwardness, impunity, and a picture of you

Most of the songs written by these guys are awesome, but this one I can sort of relate to, making it all the more special.
Rock is dead - but I believe in necrophilia.

song brought tears to my little eyes... here's the free mp3 if you want it By the Way They Dance

Jump - By the Way They Dance

And the one step and he's sliding
And the two steps and she's gliding
3 and the 1 and the 2
And then they float in the air

Side to side and she shows him
Back and forth cause she knows him
Round and round again
All that see them can't help but stare

Cause everyone knows they're in love
Everyone knows they're in love
Yes and everyone knows they're in love
By the way they dance

Cheek to cheek cause he needs her
Hand in hand as he leads her
Face to face cause they know
They'll never dance alone

Cause everyone knows they're in love
Everyone knows they're in love
Yes and everyone knows they're in love
By the way they dance

By the way she moves in circles
Ever so sweetly she wins him completely
By the way he holds her so gracefully
The hand that he lends her is able and tender
Never a step to chance
Cause everyone knows they're in love
By the way they dance

Cause everyone knows they're in love
Everyone knows they're in love
Yes and everyone knows they're in love
By the way they dance

Cause everyone knows they're in love
Everyone knows they're in love
Yes and everyone knows they're in love
By the way they dance

Dave Matthews Band
Grey Street Lyrics

Oh, just sitting while she listens
She says I don’t need this place
It seems a million years she’s stuck here
But says nothing of what she thinks

She thinks, hey,
How did I come to this?
I dreamt like anybody else one night
I would be a beautiful princess.

But then the roads in the park fall
And then she rode the line in
And the colors mix together to grey
And break me out

Oh, when I’m indifferent
She prays to God most every night
Although she swears he doesn’t listen
There’s hope in her that he just might

She says, I pray
But then my prayer fall on deaf ears
I’m supposed to take it all myself
To get out of this place.

She feels the lumps in the heart fall
And she rose up in the back
She hears the cars scream out from outside
And she whispers sometimes about this
But the colors mix together to grey
And wake me up

Oh, he grows up living
He says take what you can from your dreams
Make them real as anything
It takes the work out of the courage

She said, please,
There’s a crazy man standing outside my door
I live on the corner of a dead end street
At the end of the world.

Oh, and the rocks out in the heart fall
And she dreams her way to life
And she knows no one will lift her
So she might as well do it herself

And then bummed out and worried
Of leaving city life
But all the colors mix together to grey
On grey street
On grey street
To grey street

Oh, when it comes down in your loving
Oh, well then baby it’s right
You say you think you are nothing
No one else will do it for you
Reach up and grab hold of the sunlight
When you are waiting for what’s right
You’re holding on your heaven
Won’t leave you, yeah, yeah...

And the colors mix together to grey
Wake me up, wake me up, wake me up
To grey.

Mudvayne - World So Cold

When passion's lost and all the trust is gone,
Way too far, for way too long
Children crying, cast out and neglected,
Only in a world so cold, only in a world
This cold
Hold the hand of your best friend, look into their eyes
Then watch them drift away
Some might say, we've done the wrong things,
For way too long, for way too long

Fever inside the storm,
So I'm turning away.
Away from the name
(Calling your names)
Away from the stones
(Throw sticks and stones)
'Cause I'm through mending the wounds of us

Keep your thorns
'Cause I'm running away,
Away from the games
(****ing head games)
Away from the space
(Hate this head space)
The circumstances of a world so cold

burning whispers, Remind me of the days,
I was left alone, in a world this cold
Guilty of the same things, provoked by
The cause,
I've left alone, in a world so cold
Fever inside the storm,
So I'm turning away.
Away from the name
(Calling your names)
Away from the stones
(Throw sticks and stones)
'Cause I'm through mending the wounds of us

Keep your thorns
'Cause I'm running away,
Away from the games
(****ing head games)
Away from the space
(Hate this head space)
The circumstances of a world so cold

I'm flying, I'm flying away,
Away from the names
(Calling your names)
Away from the games
(****ing head games)
The circumstances of a world so cold

Why does everyone feel like my enemy,
Don't want any part of depression or
Darkness, I've had enough
sick and tired, bring the sun, or I'm gone,
Or I'm gone

I'm backing out, I'm no pawn,
No mother-****ing slave to this,
Never lied
Never left
Never lived
Never loved
Never lost
Never hurt
Never worry about being me, or anyone else
Not a care, no concern, don't give a **** about
Anything

Backing out, giving up, no mother-****ing
Slave to this,
Never lied
Never left
Never lived
Never loved
Never lost
Never hurt
Never worry about being me, or anyone else
Not a care, no concern, don't give a **** about
Anything,

I need to find a darkened corner,
A lightless corner,
Where it's safer and calmer,

I'm turning away.
Away from the name
(Calling your names)
Away from the stones
(Throw sticks and stones)
'Cause I'm through mending the wounds of us

I'm running away,
Away from the games
(****ing head games)
Away from the space
(Hate this head space)
The circumstances of a world so cold

I'm flying, I'm flying away,
Away from the names
(Calling your names)
Away from the games
(****ing head games)
The circumstances of a world so cold
