What is this song?
2005-02-08, 7:01 PM #41
You can write a hip-hop song about anything you can write a rock song about, so I fail to see how it's more restrictive...
And your point is kind of moot. If we were having this discussion, but reversed roles, I'd be having to say the same thing ot you about how mainstream rock sucks and you need to go searching for more underground stuff.

Honestly, this discussion is tired. I don't like having to defend a perfectly valid form of music and expression against a bunch of elitist rock-heads.

Oh, and there's more to expression than just some lyrics, besides, let me try to give an example why it wouldn't work to present the same subjects in metal as in hip-hop.

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
If you be the one to cut me
I'll bleed forever

You probably shouldn't have done that. Because if half a dollar sees that, he'll probably cover the song just like that and it will be an annoying hit.
Who made you God to say "I'll take your life from you"?

Seriously...because everyone who raps talks like that

His point is: Good hip-hop is harder to find than good rock/metal. ...
This is because you are biased towards rock, so you're going to like a greater percentage of it right off the bat. Can you not recognize this? It isn't because there's less good hip-hop, it's because you like less hip-hop.

Hint: That was a joke.

Also, I just turned on some Dutch music television channel about an hour ago. There have been 0 hip-hop songs that were good (And by good, I mean non-50Cent/Eminem stuff), and 3 good metal ones (After Forever - Monolith Of Doubt, Nightwish - Nemo, Within Temptation - Memories). And if you claim those to be "wraa satan wraa demon"-songs, I'd have to go and hit you with a bat.

I wish there was a way for mainstream tv to play non-mainstream music...then the world would be a better place

The arguments defending hip hop here are good enough that I don't have to join in with any of the arguments right now. But...

VH1 Classic has an alternative show. None of it is more recent than the early 90's (I think), but there has been some great stuff:
The Pixies
New Order
Joy Division

And I've only seen the show for about 20 minutes total.
It's not the side effects of cocaine, so then I'm thinking that it must be love

I'm going to assume that the Netherlands isn't exactly a hot bed of hip hop, thus making a llittle more difficult to see/hear underground hip hop on the usualy media outlets. The internet is your friend.

I'm pretty spoiled since there's a lot of underground stuff coming out of the Bay Area. Local shows all the time.

Nonono, it goes like this:

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
Maaaghi FALL! WILL BE FOWER YOW!
Maaaghi LOVE! WILL BE IYUN YOW!
If yeeeouou be the waghn to coght meeeii
I'll bleeyyyudd forayvaaarghr!

:p

Seriously though, my point is that it doesn't lose meaning just because you choose to spell it differently (because you think the vocalist sounds funny).

Did you even care to read my posts? It was a joke, referring to how mainstream hip-hop butchers the English language. Jeez.

Besides, Nightwish has soprano vocals, not grunted ones.

Your assumption is wrong. Especially Dutch hip-hop gets played an amazing load, wether it sucks or not (And trust me, it doesn't sound good at all). The metalbands I mentioned probably only were played because they're mainstream (Nightwish), or Dutch (After Forever and Within temptation). The rest of the hour was filled with pop, trance, and "bubbling", whatever the heck that might be.

Perhaps I shall put two colonpees next time. Or maybe three! Yet the point still stands.

Heh, I get your joke Thrawn, but Nightwish's singer is pretty much an opera singer :P

True, but Nightwish isn't the only band out there. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for that genre. I respect all genres (even country, heh heh). I just think there's a difference between not liking a certain kind of music and despising and insulting it. I suppose it's too much to ask of some people to do the same. :\
